My feelings of sadness at leaving the ship were soon changing to excitement as I waited for a shuttle cab to take us through the container-full docks to the exit point, and a taxi which drove me to my new home for a few days. My first impression: this really is a french place, my francais was better than the taxi-driver's english, quelle surprise! I'm glad I had that little bit of practise at improving my french on the ship. So we drove towards the city, chatting away however we could; I've found so many friendly people here. And up to The Plateau, a delightful area which one could vaguely compare to Oxford's Cowley Road; multi-ethnic, arty, creative, all sorts thrive here, with many cafe's and restaurants of all distinctions. My hostess (found via airbnb, which ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » North Atlantic June 22nd 2012

Here's a resume of my ocean journey, now I've reached Montreal: I arrive at the Lisbon docks by taxi to go through Immigration and then to the ship at last; it's reassuring to be met and driven by the ship's agent, he knows where he is going. We drive through a dock full of containers perched several high lowering at us, quite formidable; giant gantries stand high above, with runways like trams to go back and forth, and special carriers dart to and fro, unloading a ship up ahead. We park immediately outside Hanjin Palermo, our ship, and climb the gangway, a stairway specially netted - I guess - to catch anything which might inadvertently fall through. We're greeted by the gangway watch, welcoming grins and logging of our ID, and time of arrival. Having been ... read more

Strangely our ship is still at the docks, awaiting unloading; apparently there are too few dockers to work on the ships, so we may have another day here. That's nice too, getting to know Lisbon, and really enjoying the warmth here. Delightful city, very easy to wander, feels very old. I feel settled on the ship too, my room enormous, comfy bed, complete with fridge, ensuite bathroom, desk, will try to add photo. The only other passenger is a french woman of similar age, Francoise, who has been on board since France. The Polish captain is full of machismo, the crew are extremely polite and respectful, and the food so far is... fairly OK. Good I've brought plenty of my own. Yesterday morning after being rudely surprised by a message to get to the ship by ... read more

It's been really difficult to get prepared and set off, what with having the flu for weeks, and then the ipad incident (where I bought a new ipad, only to have it stolen a few days later, with all the related complications, police visits, forensics, not to mention hours of talking to insurance people etc. thankfully resulting in receipt of new ipad the day before I left UK). Sorry to moan, but it has been like wading thru mud! Still, I did manage to copy some family trees, photos, and letters for the relatives in Canada. I found a container ship to take me as passenger across the Atlantic, sadly not from Liverpool, but from Lisbon, and arriving in Montreal as my grandfather and his brother did, which feels very exciting. Sailing along the great St ... read more

RE-starting my blog after a long time; getting excited about my trip to Montreal, Canada, in the footsteps of my maternal grandfather. When he was 18, with his 20 year old brother, he set off by cattle ship in 1905. I have found a container ship to take me a similar journey, though I must go to Portugal to meet the ship! heyho. So preparations are in full swing, particularly getting family history info together to show to relatives on the other side of the pond. Altho' my grandpa only stayed for 20 odd years, marrying my granny and my mum born there in Saskatchewan, they returned to England when my granny became ill. My mum was 3 yrs old. however, several of his relatives stayed there, and it's his brother's daughter Letitia who I'm interested ... read more

Hallo, here's an update of my last few days, starting back in N. W. Wales: May 4th 2010 An unexpected visit from an old friend overnight and for a morning was a glorious intermission... I took her to the nearby burial chamber, and we were both very moved by the atmosphere there. After spending most of last week on that friendly campsite, visiting ancient sites up and down the old Roman roads in the Conwy valley, and getting lost in the hills above, I escaped the Bank holiday rush by driving down to Denbigh to visit a 5W member & her husband for the weekend. They live in a cottage by an old manor house, where Beatrice Potter wrote the Flopsy Bunnies, the drawings of Mr Macgregors garden and the potting shed were all done there! ... read more

Dear friends, have decided to post a blog, see if it still works. I so enjoy writing about my travels, so here's some of my first writings about my journey: 1. April 2010 I left home on 30th March, with my new tenant moving in as I cancelled the electric! Most salutary to condense my belongings and pack them into my loft, garden shed, and friends’ garage. And this feels a good time to be setting off on adventure. After a great long weekend in Devon, on the Womens Healing Retreat, and a few days with friend Erica in Buckfastleigh searching for a van, I realised I wanted something smaller than those I’d been looking at. We soon came up with the idea of a Romahome made by Citroen, and Gumtree provided this very one, in ... read more

Well I'm finally home my dears! and having been off -line since I returned, unable to get this out. I spent a final week in Boston, USA, with another dear and distant relative, mainly resting and recovering from the long journies of the past few months. Taking up my mother's hobby of connecting with relatives, feels very positive, and fun to make connections with those in distant parts. We did take an interesting ferry ride round the harbour for a historical tour, really fascinating to learn about the Boston Tea Party, and the place where the Revolution and break away from us Brits started; we were shown the very church spire where a lantern was hung to signal to Paul Revere and co that the war had started, and his great ride to tell the folks ... read more

Howdy folks..... Yesterday I left Canada and moved into the great US of A....so here's the remainder of the Canada story: correcting my previous entry, of course I was in the western side last time I wrote! I completed my islands trip, staying with more wonderful 5W members as I went, and using a little hitching on safe islands to get about. It can be done on public transport, takes quite a lot of research and I mainly did use buses and ferries of course. I got up to Campbell River, as intended on Vancouver Island, a place where most folk go to fish; salmon abounds and the eateries there were full of big guys talking fish of various sorts! I visited Janet and Tom on Quadra Island, lots of forest, eagles, even wolves there and ... read more

Hallo from East coast Canada; After a gentle week staying at my 2nd cousin's house in west Vancouver, I'm now exploring some of the Gulf Islands off Vancouver Island. It was wonderful to be able to relax in a family home after my 13+ hour flight from Auckland. That's the longest flight I'll ever do I think, and still very sad that I had to fly, when I nearly had a place booked on a freight vessel: heyho. I did get to see 2 movies tho! I had so enjoyed my last few days on the coromandel peninsula, and had visited Hot Water Beach, where the sand is too hot to stand on in places, where the ?springs come up. also Cathedral cove, a huge sculptural rock which some of us walked to, another place to ... read more
