Saw A Dee Kah from Thailand. It's hard to believe we are beginning our 3rd week on the island. The day is lovely, 31 and sunny with a slight breeze. . . . a perfect day for the beach! Surprisingly, the weather in week two here has consisted of quite a few cloudy days with rain off and on! According to a German friend who has been coming here for 25 years, he has never seen a January so cloudy and rainy!! I guess it is the trend all over the world! However, it doesn't damper our activities. On a cloudy/showery day we often will walk in town to look in the shops and have a leisurely lunch. We have discovered some great little restaurants at the north end of the beach road. Some days we ... read more

Ahhh........ life at the beach on the island of Ko Samui, Thailand. It doesn't get any better than this (well at least for us)!! It was great to return to one of our favourite islands. The Thai people here are so friendly, kind and happy. Things are much the same as they were two years ago. A few new places and the price of a beer and a Thai meal on the beach has gone up 30 cents to a whopping $3.50 Cnd!! We checked into our new home for the next three weeks - "Bill Resort". The property is on a beautiful and tropical spot on a slope at the south end of Lamai Beach. The familiar Thai shaped and colorful bungalows are scattered throughout the jungle with every tropical plant, tree and flower you ... read more

We touched down in Bangkok at midnight and quickly caught a taxi into the historic part of the city. According to Warren, it was rather a hair raising cab ride zooming down the 5 lane speedways! Ironically, I was nodding off to sleep and missed the whole thing! However, we arrived safe and sound to the famous bustling and noisy Kho San Rd. What a crazy but fun place to experience! The excitement starts around 6 p.m. and goes on until around 5 a.m. which is very popular with the young backpackers who stay up all night and sleep all morning! Food stalls, music, entertainment, restaurants and all kinds of clothing and souvenir shops are jammed packed into 3 or 4 blocks. We stayed 3 nights at the Rikka Inn. A great location on Kho San ... read more

Hello family and friends! We begin our blog for 2011 in Hong Kong! After an overnight in Vancouver, we boarded a 13 hour flight to Hong Kong at 11:30 a.m. local time. The trip didn't seem too bad as we were flying during our daytime so sleeping wasn't an issue. Air Canada's service was great. It was somewhat strange skipping ahead a day arriving in Hong Kong on Wed. @ 5:30 p.m. when it was still 4 in the morning at home! We easily manouvered through the enormous, efficient and ultra modern Hong Kong airport and hailed a cab arriving at our hotel in Kowloon within an hour! Kowloon is an area on the mainland and part of the densley populated city/country of Hong Kong (population 7 million). We couldn't believe the amazing infrastructure and number ... read more

Hello Again!! We wound up our last week in Thailand with a trip to the island of Phuket and then back to Bangkok for a final farewell to our friend Ting. We had heard that Phuket was rather touristy and highly commercialized but we wanted to see it for ourselves. It was certainly a little more touristy and busy but we loved it for a few days!! After switching boats from Koh Lanta to Phuket in the middle of the Andaman Sea (rather funny as you have to kind of walk a plank to get to the next boat as the crew throws your luggage onto the next boat!) we arrived to the busy port of Phuket Town. We soon found a transfer to our swanky resort "Blue Marine Resort" on Patong Beach (I found this ... read more

Hello Fellow Canadians, Family and Friends!! You are probably wondering when I am going to stop blogging but I actually quite enjoy re-counting the events of our holiday ( and I also like sitting in the air conditioned internet cafe!) As we near the end of our vacation we have been venturing out on some excursions to near by destinations: 4-Island Snorkel/Tour Trip We stopped at some beautiful spots for snorkelling and swimming. A highlight was the "Emerald Cave" where we swam in a long line hanging on to the lifejacket of the person in front of us and ended up coming out the other end into a lovely emerald green pool oasis surrounded by high mountains and open sky! It was pretty amazing. We had a great day on the boat travelling in and around ... read more

Sawadee (Hello in Thai) everyone! We made it safe and sound to Koh Lanta! We found our transportation from Samui here quite comical but efficient. It was much like being transported around like a fugitive! At our first ferry ride they slapped a sticker on our shirt that said "Lanta" in Thai. We were dropped off about 6 times at various points and depots only to be picked up by another boat or van without incident. In the end after 3 ferries ,1 bus, 4 mini vans, 1 tuk tuk and 8 hours later we arrived at the doorstep of Lanta Garden Resort! The scenery on our trip was very impressive especially the jungle forest and limestone mountains around Krabi. We are very happy with our bungalow situated on a tropical lane in a gated community! ... read more

Hello Again! Hope everyone is well in the great white north!! As well as having spectacular beaches and resorts, Koh Samui has many other interesting attractions. One day the four of us took a tour around the island. Along the way we saw some unique rock formations, waterfalls, little villages, temples, mummified monds, big buddahs, markets and areas with lots of construction of new luxury resorts and condos. Our beach, "Lamai", is a little quieter and laid back than the bigger and busier one to the north called Chewang. We have been to Chewang a few times. The nightlife is pretty crazy with lots of high end restaurants and action. It is a very exciting place to be but we prefer Lamai. At both beaches, fireworks are a routine event every night. They are actually quite ... read more

Hello Again!! After a lovely one hour flight on Bangkok Airways we arrived on the beautiful island of Koh Samui - our home for the next month. First impression kind of reminded us of Hawaii. We have a clean, comfortable and spacious apartment nestled on a hill in the jungle about a 20 minute walk from our resort beach. The best thing about our Aloha apartment is the monthly price tag of 12,000 bahts (about $14.00 Cnd per night!!) We enjoy the peaceful surrounding, the tropical tees and plants and the mysterious sounds of the jungle ceatures. We have Thai families living close by so we don't feel isolated as well in the 19 other apartments in the same complex- mostly German who are here long term. They have been very helpful in giving us tips ... read more
