Okay so it's been two.5 weeks since my last entry.. I get more and more lazy with this I know. Anyway, so the most interesting things that have happened in the last 2.5 weeks have been, firstly that I got a parasite about 2 weeks ago. Felt like shit one morning and was hauled to the doctor by one of the Projects Abroad people at around noon. Turned out I had a parasite so was given some pills and a massive bottle of oral hydration stuff with " strawberry flavour" - tasted so disgusting, especially when i was already pretty nauseous. Friday 6 of us took the 6 hr night bus to Puno which is in the north, right by Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Half of it is Peruvian, the other ... read more

The last 2 weeks have been hectic. The major event here in Peru has been the floodings due to all the rain we had last week. Lots of houses have been flooded, forcing people out with nothing. Also, lots of the houses up the mountains especially in Cusco, have collapsed as they're pretty fragile. Lots of people are living in the schools and there's also a lot in the sports field just down the road from our house. 2000 tourists were trapped on Machu Picchu as the roads and train tracks were all washed away - they were all flown down by helicopter. According to my host mum, Machu Picchu wont open until April - there's so much work to do. It's pretty much all that's in the news over here.. I'm thinking we'll be helping ... read more

The tale of this weekend: Friday we went for a "hike" around a lake near Chinchero - we werent that many but was a lot of fun anyway. It was a really beautiful place (but then everywhere here is basically beautiful). We walked for about 2-3 hrs or something like that. In the afternoon we all tried to sleep a little as we were going to Cusco for the weekend. Elena and I took a late bus which took 2 hrs to get to Cusco (it usually takes 1) and got to the hostel were we'd all booked ourselves rooms. It was an okay place - buildings in Peru dont seem tohave heating so it was pretty cold, the room was also weird as it had a double bed and smallbathroom downstairs and then a dangerous ... read more

Something I forgot to put in the other entry and something I think deserves it's own entry: I have seen the Peruvian Johnny Depp. It's quite fascinating really, as he now joins the group of non-white Depps out there. I saw the black version in Tanzania (he was one of the drummers at the circus - obviously they're all in the entertainment business). I have now to find the chinese Depp - must go to China. x... read more

So I am in Peru - have been here for 2 days now and have already done so much! So this is gonna be a LONG entry, beware. It's only the hardcore that can get through this baby: Sunday my mum and I went to Copenhagen and stayed at the Hilton (I wasnt paying, obviously) as my flight to Newark was at 9 am monday. The flight was half an hour delayed but it ended up being an hour early getting into Newark. It was really amazing flying over New York and seeing the Empire State building and all other huge landmarks - didnt think to take any photos until on the flight out of there which was a shame cos we didnt fly across it again so only got some pics with it all in ... read more

Africa October 23rd 2009

My problems with my stupid host mum have been "resolved" in that I have now moved host family. I now live with the people who run SOK, the company we did safari and Kili with, and they are so nice, they are some of the nicest people i have ever met and they also live in luxury (tanzanian luxury that is) - i now have a shower ! with hot water, they say, but so far i've only had a freezing cold shower. But I really don't care about that. My host dad is called Sebastian, he's quite a big guy but he does it (being big that is) with style somehow. My host mum is called Irene, also have a host sister, Winfred/Winnie and a host brother. They're so nice and are a lot ... read more

Okay so as a follow up on my boastful "I'm gonna climb Kili" shit I would like to let everyone know that I admit defeat. I started off well, got to 4000 and, whilst looking at the amazing view, hurt my ankle. It's my own fault really, we were walking on basically just rocks and I should know by now that luck doesn't really cling to me.. so anyway, our guide Richard told me I should go down as my ankle would need rest and a top of a mountain really wasnt the best place for that. Totally bummed me out. So pissed off but oh well.. Guess it was also the thought of all that money I'd paid for it that bummed me out. Anyhow, so I had to walk down to this hut which ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar » Nungwi October 5th 2009

So Alice and I have been here in Zanzibar on the north-west coast since wednesday and it's absolutely brilliant! It's pure paradise. I love it ! The sea is so blue/green and the sand is so white, it's like flour. The days we've had here have been amazing.. We live in a small hut with 2 double beds and a bathroom with flushing toilet and a shower! The shower is amazing after only using buckets for the past 6 weeks unfortunatly there was only luke warm water the first night so it's been freezing cold showers ever since. We've spent a lot of time on the beach just relazing, reading and listening to music, lying in the hammocks, having drinks in the evening.. I'm so glad i'm travelling with alice as she's so much fun, absolutely ... read more

Oh and a quick one just to inform everyone of the coolest thing in the world! In Tanzania you can get a licence to kill!!!! If someone steals your money, car or goat/cow whatever, you can go to the police who are really lazy so they will issue you a licence saying if you ever see the person again, you have permission to kill him! That is seriously great (and totally awful I know) but you can actually have chance at being 007.. But people around here are not shy to kill people tho. Alice who lives out in nowhere saw a man get beaten to death with sticks after he stole some money from someone. He ran all night across the "fields" and was caught outside her orphanage. Oh and what she didn't realise that ... read more

So Alice and I go to Zanzibar on Wednesday!! and we start climbing Kili in a week and 3 days. Shit. Can't wait. In the next three days I'll be living by the ATMs as we both have to pay for Kili (1000 USD) and get money out to last us in Zanzibar as apparently VISA sucks there and you cant get any money out. Which is really weird since it's a tourist haven. The ATM of course has a daily limit and often they dont work so I'm gonna take as much out as poss today, tmr and tuesday. I have to get out 1,300,000 tsh to pay for Kili and the highest tanzanian note is 10,000. It's gonna be like robbing the bank! Just getting out 100,000 gets you a huge wad of money. ... read more
