Michelle and Ben

Hey Everyone!

We are traveling to the United Kingdom twice this coming school year, due to Ben's medical school. He will be following a doctor around for a month in the fall in London, England doing Pediatrics. We will return to the UK in the spring, going to Edinburgh in Scotland, where he will follow a doctor around doing Neurology. I get to join him on these adventures, and enjoy staying and exploring the UK! Yay!

Hi there, everyone!! It has been almost a week since I last updated the travelblog with our recent sightseeing, so I have a lot to tell you! Perhaps you should go grab a snack or a cup of coffee before reading this entry all the way through. :) Wednesday, September 22 and Thursday, September 23 On these days, we went to Westminster Abbey. It is one of those places you always hear the name of, but aren't ever sure what it is. I mean, an Abbey is a really pretty church, but what is so special about this particular one? Well, we found out on our tour. Basically, here in the UK (and to my understanding, all over Europe) people are buried in or near churches. I guess the idea is that your body should be ... read more

Working at King's College Hospital My time at King's College Hospital has been full of surprises. Now that it is nearly over, I can safely conclude that it is not what I expected --- though not necessarily for the worse. What I Expected King's College Hospital is a very busy hospital. As I knew, King's trains more medical professionals than anywhere else in Europe, thus it was no surprise when there was nearly one junior doctor per patient for the first few days until things settled down a bit. There were literally more doctors than nurses and technicians combined! Another thing I expected was multidisciplinary ward rounds. That means that it is more than just the doctors who "round" on the patients every morning (that is, go and see them each individually and discuss their care). ... read more

Hello Everyone! We have visited different places each day these past few days, all of which have the letter P in them! Sunday, we visited Kensington Palace and Clink Prison Museum. Monday we went to Platform 9 3/4, and Tuesday we went to the Palace of Westminster and saw the Perfectly timed clock, Big Ben! Sunday: One of the many palaces here in London is Kensington Palace, which is where 7 different princesses have lived. I am not sure what the palace is currently used for except for a tourist attraction, but I got the impression that it was used for something else as well, I just don't remember what it was. Anyway, this used to be a royal residence, and it is located near Hyde Park. There is currently an exhibit there that is about ... read more

Hi there everyone! I am so sorry that I have not posted in a while! But here is the long-awaited update of what Ben and I did with our week this past week! :) Wednesday, September 15: We went to Hyde Park today to have a relaxing evening walking outdoors. There are lots of parks here in London, all of which seem to be quite large. It is not like they took one city block and made it into a park, these parks are spacious and seem to be well-maintained. There were some statues and fountains and flower gardens throughout the park which we took some pictures of, but we mostly just enjoyed spending the time walking and talking. That day was a little rough for me, because we have been here for over 2 weeks ... read more

International Study at King's College London The long awaited post of Ben's international studies is here at last! (applause) There is so very much to write, so be prepared: I will likely be forced to write additional entries to spaciously honor the important events and knowledge gained here. This post will refer to the beginning and basics of my medical studies in London. Reflections on the British healthcare system will require its own entry at a later date. I arrived at King's College London's Guy Campus approximately fourty-five minutes late of the beginning of my orientation. Oops. There is a fair explanation which involves a very, very, very obvious route between the tube station and the target building that mysteriously resulted in a very, very, very long detour around downtown London. It was only a hundred ... read more

Hi there, everyone! Sorry that I have not posted in a few days, but Ben and I had a busy weekend! Here, I would like to tell you all about it! On Friday night after Ben got done with school, we went to the British Museum. There, they have all kinds of artifacts from different cultures around the world. They had exhibits for each culture, including muslim, mexican, egyptian, roman, greek, and asyrian. There were all kinds of cool things to see, but the coolest thing was that we got to see the Rosetta Stone. Yes, the actual, for real, this-is-not-an-imitation Rosetta Stone! That was very cool. :) Saturday's weather was looking wet, so we decided to do another museum day since we wouldn't want to have bad pictures of the outsides of the major sites ... read more

We are writing this entry together, combining our thoughts about London so far. This is sort of a continuation of the last entry. Differences Betweeen the US and UK We hope to not have mislead you in the previous entry that the US and UK are nearly identical. As it was said, all of the core aspects are the same: they eat much like us, their days follow the same schedules, and virtually all major aspects of their behavior match our own. However, now it is time to highlight the minor but fun differences that make them British! There are, of course, the obvious ones that any American would know. They drive on the opposite side of the road, and while this may seem like a fairly easy thing to grow accustomed to, we find it ... read more

Ben and I have had many surprises during our stay here in London, and we wanted to share some of our thoughts and observations with you all. So, here we go! Similarities Between the US and UK Michelle: In many ways, the US and the UK seem to be more similar than I thought. At least in the big city, there are advertisements at every bus station and subway station, but not as many posted on the actual buildings as I have seen in the US. It seems that a lot of the popular culture from America has trickled to the UK as well, seeing as they have many of the same things that are advertised. For example, the play "Wicked" and even a musical of "Legally Blonde" are currently in theatres here in London. Another ... read more

Hey there everyone! Great news! We finally found a place to live for the rest of our stay here!! Yay!! It is a studio "flat" (that is what they call an apartment) with 3 areas. The first area is a living room/bedroom with a TV, internet access, a dresser, couch, and fouton. Ben and I are sleeping on the fouton. The TV only has a few channels, including BBC. But at least that way, I can watch the news. :) The next area is a very narrow kitchen. It is so narrow that when I open a drawer, I have to stand to one side of it because it almost hits the wall on the other side! But, it has a toaster, clothes washer, small refridgerator, and oven and "hob" (what they call the stove). so, ... read more

Hi there everyone!! Ben and I are waiting until tomorrow to worry about more apartments. We are being shown one, and there is a company that deals with short term apartment leases that is going to call us back tomorrow. So, since there wasn't much we could do with that today, we decided to have some fun! We went to this place called the Camden Market. It was so cool! Imagine the biggest art fair you have ever been to... times 1,000! it was so awesome. It spanned a few city blocks and even had upstairs, downstairs, and along the street. Basically, you would walk along the regular streeet, and then there was this gap between some of the buildings. As you walk in there, you see a maze of little kiosks and shops, similar to ... read more
