Mad Mama and the Boboszh Take NY
a trip by Mary Testa-Smith
From: April 14th 2012
Until: April 28th 2012
Mary and Gracie go to visit the places of Mary's early life in NYC.
Gracie has always been very interested in our family history. Our visits to Plymouth MA and Vermont taught her a lot about her paternal ancestors over the last 400 years. A visit to Ireland to visit my family opened up a whole new set of maternal ancestor lore, but knowledge from our Irish relatives pretty much ends in the 1920s, when my grandparents emigrated to America.
Gracie mentioned last year that she wants to have the American side of my story in my own words, since once I'm gone there will be no one left to tell them. She's 20, and I'm 62, so she thinks I'll be dropping dead any minute now. And who knows-- I might be. So we took this trip to show her and tell her everything I remember about growing up in NYC. It was a truly awesome childhood in many ways, and opened doors for me that wouldn't have been possible anywhere else. She's soaking up the info by my words, recording a lot of it on her mp3, and taking pictures of all my touchstone places. It's very flattering that she's so interested in my life, which seems kind of boring to me, but I suppose everyone's life seems that way to themselves. When I really look at what I've done, where I've been, and whom I've met... well, I've been very lucky, and have had some amazing experiences, so maybe it's not such a snooze-fest after all.
