The kids and auntie crazy Leane came 1-2-3 in … oh now I’ve forgotten the event. Had a tour of Whistler village (more like a sizable town these days) and a great hike around Lost Lake. Almost no snow and they are in the midst of closing the ski hills early. Took the evening ferry across to Nanaimo. Spent the next day wandering around the downtown area and shoreline. Highlights included lunch on the wharf beside the seaplane port and the art galleries and studios. Drove across Vancouver Island today. Stopped and hiked among the 800 year old Douglas Firs in Cathedral Grove. Arrived at Tofino to gale warnings on the radio. Feels like we’re time travelers. Even though we are more than 500 km north here in Vancouver than we were at home in Ontario it feels like May. Or June. The white snowdrifts up to the windowsills have been replaced by an almost-as-complete covering of yellow daffodils. This west coast climate is not hard to take. Perversely, we seemed to be magnetically drawn to the only snow in the greater Vancouver area the day before yesterday. We found ourselves on the cable car going up Grouse Mountain. Even at the top there were only patches of snow though. Great view of the “Lower Mainland” (gotta get into the local dialect y’know) and the state of Washington beyond. Thousands of hours of research and planning has come down to the last few days. Here's big tip number one for any other families planning on taking an extended international backpacking trip: Talk to someone who has already done it. Kathryn Young, Bill Davies and family of Kanata, Ontario were the friends of friends who were our experts. They answered all our questions and even gave us their packing list! You can read all the travel books you want (and we have) but there really is nothing better than having the revised packing list from a family who has already experienced it (with 3 kids for 8 months).
