City Walls of Dubrovnik This morning I woke up early to walk the city walls when it opened. The city walls surround the city centre of Dubrovnik. It took me approximately 1.5 hours to walk the city walls while stopping to take incredible pictures of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops. Mount Srd and Panorama Restaurant I then met Drea at the entrance to the city walls and we headed up to Mount Srd to see Dubrovnik from Above. We had reservations at Panorama Restaurant and Bar at 10:00 am. Panorama received a Michelin star and was worth the trip up the mountain. I enjoyed my coffee and treat while enjoying the view of the city walls from above. We then headed back to the hotel to enjoy time by the pool. I booked a Game of Thrones tour ... read more

Split to Dubrovnik Today we departed Split and headed to Dubrovnik. I woke up early to take pictures of Diocletian’s Palace while it was quiet and check out the view from Marjan Hill. Then, it was about a 3-hour drive from Split to Dubrovnik where we stayed at the Ariston Hotel at the Royal Resort. I had my first cliff-jumping experience which was terrifying but worthwhile. Then we had dinner in Dubrovnik's old town. We went to Dubravka Restaurant which provided a great view overlooking the old city walls and the food was great as well. After dinner, we walked around the old town a bit and I had my first Affogato while watching people climb the Jesuit stairs. Tomorrow, I will get a chance to climb the wall and get a panoramic view of the ... read more

Plitvice National Park Today, we left early in the morning on our road trip to the coast of Croatia. The first stop was Plitvice Lakes National Park. Plitvice Lakes National Park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Croatia. In 1979, the park was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Andrea dropped me off at the entrance of the park. The park is beautiful but it took me over an hour to get in. I did not spend that much time at the park because we needed to head over to Split before it got dark. I would one day need to come back to Croatia to experience the park in all its glory. Split We arrived in Split in the late afternoon. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia after the ... read more

I was greeted at the airport in Zagreb by my friend Andrea. Andrea usually spends a couple of weeks in Croatia in June every year. We stopped by her apartment in Zagreb to drop off my luggage and headed into downtown Zagreb. Trg Bana Josipa Jelacica The first stop was Ban Jelačić Square, the central square of the city of Zagreb, Croatia, named after Ban Josip Jelačić. The square has a statue of Ban Josip Jelacic, a Croatian lieutenant field marshal known for his military campaigns during the Revolutions of 1848 and for his abolitions of serfdom in Croatia. The square is also a place that Drea’s family visited a lot where her parent would sit down and people-watch. Her brother also got drunk one time and swam in the fountain in the square with his ... read more

The other tour that Renata and I decided to go on was a Sugar, Rum and Tobacco Tour. Our first stop was a sugar cane museum. At the museum, we saw a collection of locomotives used in sugar production and learned how sugarcane is grown and processed. We even tried Guarapo, a sweet drink made from sugar cane We then enjoyed learning about and tasting the local rum while getting drunk in the process and we tried our first Cuban cigar (Definitely not for me). I can see why sugar, rum and tobacco play an important role in Cuban culture and enjoyed learning and trying their local products. So that marked the end of our Cuba trip. Definitely relaxing and a great getaway from everyday life. The cars, the people, the drinks; Cuba was a fun ... read more

To experience the cultural aspect of Cuba, Renata and I decided to also take day trips. On our first day trip, we went to Havana, the capital of Cuba. On our tour of Havana, we visited: 1. A fort in Cuba (I don’t remember the name) 2. The Grand Theatre of Cuba 3. The National Capital of Cuba, 4. "El Floridita," a historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar. The establishment is famous for its daiquiris and for being one of the favourite hangouts of Ernest Hemingway in Havana, 5. Plaza De La Catedral, and La Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada de La Habana We also saw some fancy vintage cars and Cuban taxis. We ended the night with a visit to the Cabaret Tropicana where we were impressed with performances incorporating traditional ... read more

Canadians love to go to Cuba for vacation. So, we decided it was time Renata and I finally visited Cuba. For the first time in Cuba, we stayed at an all-inclusive resort. We heard good things about the Melia Resort chain from our friend Andrea, who was travelling with us. We decided to spend a week at the all-inclusive resort Melia Los Americas in Varadero, Cuba The Resort The first couple of days were pool days, where we explored the resort, relaxed, and enjoyed Pina Coladas and other alcoholic drinks by the pool. The beach was stunning. The creepy critters were about and the local cats provided great entertainment. It provided a great mental escape from the everyday work life in Canada. The resort had a display of vintage motorcycles and cars one day and a ... read more

Day 5: Sunday, November 21st, 2021 With our bags packed, we ordered an Uber to take us from our hotel to the airport. Renata and I got an interesting ride in our first Tesla. The Uber driver called his car a “toy”. At the airport there was time for breakfast. I had some Avocado Toast which was delicious before our flight back to Toronto. So, with that, a well-deserved and great trip had ended. Hopefully, the pandemic ends soon so that Renata and I can go to other destinations without following all these Covid precautions and protocols. Until then!... read more

Day 4: Saturday, November 20th, 2021 For Breakfast this morning we headed to Sweet Maple, one of the go-to-brunch spots in San Francisco. I had their French toast and millionaires’ bacon. It was probably my favourite meal in San Francisco. The millionaire’s bacon was delicious. Millionaire’s bacon is thicker bacon baked with brown sugar, cayenne, red and black pepper. After breakfast we headed to the Japan Center. Unfortunately, not many stores were open yet so instead we headed to Chinatown to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. We bought some fortune cookies for home. They even had green tea and chocolate flavoured fortune cookies. We then headed downhill towards the Ferry Building. At the Ferry Building Renata and I bought some chocolate at Dandelion Chocolate. Outside the Ferry Building there was also a Farmers market ... read more

Day 3: Friday, November 19th, 2021 Today the gang is heading out to Napa Valley. We had an early breakfast at 7:00 am at the Blue Mermaid restaurant. After my delish French toast, the group headed of the nearby Avis to pick up the car to travel to Napa Valley. Andrea our driver, did not want to take the rental car up and down the scary hilly roads to our RT-PCR appointment and I do not blame her. I would never want to drive in San Francisco. The steep hills are terrifying. We took an Uber to our CVS RT-PCR Covid-19 appointment which was a good thing because there was no parking at the site even though it said the appointment was a drive through. After our RT-PCR test we headed back to our hotel to ... read more
