As a human of this Earth, I love to explore. I am an environmentalist who lives for adventures off the beaten path. My joy comes from meeting new people, trying new foods, exposure to new cultures, and visiting the regions very few Americans will ever see. I've visited countries like Ireland, France, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong. My latest journey has taken me on a jaunt through the Southwestern provinces of China; Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Yunnan, and Sichuan. I hope you will enjoy reading what I've shared. Perhaps you too will be inspired to 'never stop exploring'.

Asia » China » Yunnan » Tiger Leaping Gorge March 22nd 2013

Tiger Leaping Gorge (Yunnan trekker's de facto "rite of passage" hike) For anyone coming to Yunnan to hike, this route is No.1. The Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest river gorges in the world. It's 16 km long and walled on either side by neighboring Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (18,360') to the south and Haba Snow Mountain (17,700') to the north. The area gets it's name from a local legend where a tiger once leaped across the Gorge's narrowest point to escape a predator. It must have been a Chinese T-Rex or something to get a big cat like that to leap 82 feet across a raging river! But seriously, the gorge itself is unbelievable. It looks as if an ax struck the mountains between two massive snowy peaks. Why on earth did the ... read more

Baishuitai (bai-schway-tai) - meaning, "White Water Terraces" Before the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike, Richard (hiking guide) recommended that I take a bus to visit the "white water terraces" at Baishuitai. "It's very beautiful, and my family came from that same village many many years ago", he said. The place gets it's name from the natural terrace mantles which formed over many years by gradual precipitation of the calcium carbonate mineral found naturally in the spring's groundwater. From a distance, it looks like a massive paint spill. Up close, they look exactly like white rice terraces filled with sapphire blue spring water. The park itself was very clean and had a very relaxed feel. The view from above looking down into the valley was beautiful! The sunlight shining from the West made the green wheat fields come ... read more

The Snow Mountain Tour (400 mile cycling tour!) DISCLAIMER: This post is going to blow your mind! Ted and Luanne (the innkeepers here at the Kaiwen Village Inn) asked me to evaluate their "Snow Mountain Tour", a 700 kilometer (400 mile) cycling route that forms a loop around the 5 major snow mountains north of Lijiang. What made this side-adventure so unique was that I was loaned a mountain bike to ride the whole way while Thomas, Richard's nephew as my driver, followed behind me in his van. Sorta like a pro cycling team's support car! Before I left, Ted warned that the route would be very dangerous in certain places - many sections of the road have narrow shoulders, shear dropoffs, and at times very heavy truck traffic. Other sections ascend extremely steep hills through ... read more

Lijiang I'm SO glad I chose to add on two more weeks to my trip itinerary before booking my flights. Discovering a place like Lijiang is the exact reason for giving myself the extra time. It's surroundings are filled with places to explore and endless hiking opportunites, various minority cultures, and awe inspiring scenery. I will definitely be coming back to visit Lijiang again next time I travel to China. Lijiang Old Town is characterized by it's confusing labyrinth of cobbled streets, rickety-looking wooden buildings, and open waterways. The only downside to this place it it gets absolutely PACKED with Chinese tourists nearly year round. I read that nearly 12% of Yunnan's total tourist population comes to Lijiang. That's HUGE! The town's tiny alleyways are frequently jammed with Chinese visitors and as you walk through the ... read more

Dali Ancient City This place was WAY better than Kunming!! Oh man. Way nicer people and far better scenery. What's unique about Dali is that it's divided into the Ancient City and the new city, Xia Guan (lower town). The new city is modern; deluxe hotels and large shopping malls, while the Ancient City is a well-preserved relic from the 8th century. Nowadays, Dali Ancient City is mainly set up for tourist visitors. In fact, there's even a street named "yangren jie" which means "foreigner street" lined with shops selling bootleg CD's, crispy crust pizza, and cheap garb. The Dali Ancient City lies on the western edge of Erhai Lake. The altitude here is 6,330 feet, almost the same elevation as Lake Tahoe. Behind it soar the Jade Green Mountians and the awesome Cang ... read more

Kunming (the capital city of Yunnan province) Kunming was my first city in Yunnan. I took a 21 hour train from Loudi to get there. I was glad I had bought a Y450 "soft" sleeper ticket because the bed was much wider and the room came with a door. I really lucked out when I discovered that the other occupants of my cabin were 3 lovely Chinese girls. I joked with them in both Mandarin and English. They giggled when they saw the enormous amount of hair shown on my passport photo. The whole trip we noshed on Chinese snack foods (spicy tofu bites, sesame cookies, chicken wings, noodles, shatian pomelos, and mandarin oranges). I stayed at the Kunming Cloudland hostel for 4 nights. It's rooms were cozy and the shared bathrooms all got fresh flowers ... read more

The Wedding! Maaaawwiage!! February 19th, 2013 - Mr. and Mrs. Huan Li It was an EARLY morning. I rose at 5:30AM so I could be fully dressed when I walked over to meet Huan at his apartmant at 6:15AM. It was freezing that day!! The outside temperature read 2 degrees Celsius when we hopped into Huan's friends car. It was a good thing I chose to wear two pairs of thermal bottoms and extra thick socks that morning! The first order of business was to go to the flower shop to have the rented black Mercedes decorated. They strung pink ribbons along the sides of the car and mounted a large floral arrangment to the hood. The Benz was fully tricked out in under 30 minutes. Dayum! Next, we met the photographer/videographer crew and had them ... read more

Longji Rice Terraces(near Longsheng!) Here in Southern China they grow rice, A LOT OF RICE. The Chinese like to cultivate rice by flooding the fields because it helps helps with soil fertilization, deters both weeds and pests, and keeps pesky vermin away. So how exactly does one grow rice on a hill? You make terraces. A LOT OF TERRACES. The mountainous region around Longsheng is heavily striated with rice fields. The Longji Rice Terraces (aka the Dragon's Backbone) is by far the most spectacular showing of this farm engineering technique with terraces running from valley floor up 1,640 feet to the ridges. We were lucky to have a few hours with a clear view across the valley. Heavy fog banks and strong mists severely limit visibility usually in the winter and early-spring months. The next morning ... read more

Loudi (low-dee) Hometown of friend, Huan Li The whole reason I chose to travel to China was because I was invited to be the Best Man at the wedding of a former colleague of mine, Huan Li. Huan and I were Master’s students together at UC Davis. I landed at the airport in Changsha on Chinese New Year's Eve. Huan and his fiance, Sheng Nan, picked me up in their brand new, sporty red Ford Focus. We drove 2 hours South to Huan's house in Loudi to meet his family for dinner. Huan's house was kush! It had two stories, all concrete, and had a rounded entrance. His house had no lawn but instead featured a large pond and adjacent garden with a pomelo tree and a fig tree. When pulled up, Huan's father's family invited ... read more

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park This was one of my favorite places so far this trip. Zhangjiajie (pron. "jang-jah-jee") features hundreds of these bizarre sandstone towers formed during many years of weathering and erosion. The climate here is usually wet year round so the foliage is super dense and there are small streams running everywhere. The Chinese like to say it's more impressive than the Grand Canyon. Hmm, we'll see about that! In 1982, Zhangjiajie was declared China's first national forest park (much like our Yellowstone!). It must be a national showcase because it is VERY clean. The trails were cleaned up, the park enforced a "no-smoking" policy, they posted good trail signs (in English, Korean, and Japanese!), and the park also provided many other pleasantries for visitors. The one pleasantry that stands out in my mind ... read more
