After a casual start Friday 14th Junewe motored to Keppel Bay Marina, Yeppoon. Naomi was nervous as she returning to her homeland (for the second time by boat). There we were met at the jetty by Don and Cheryl (Naomi's parents). They helped us tie up, gave us a warm welcome and our car keys. Naomi's brother Andrew, and owner of CQ Sailmakers, was coming later that day to measure up the boat for a new foresail. So for this the old sail had to come down and for this Naomi needed to go up 3/4 of the mast to release a rope. She complained that I was wobbling the boat too much as I moved around the deck- not sure how she will cope if she has to do this out to sea! After some ... read more

After our uncomfortable night near 1770 I had to wrap up the last blog quickly as Naomi got desperate to get off the boat. Climbed into the dingy with difficulty as it rose and dropped with the swell and headed to the sand banks to look for a way through to the sheltered channel next to 1770. As we got closer it occurred to us that there may be no way through as the swell seemed to be breaking right across our way. Headed toward the beach as I thought I saw a gap. As small steep waves were mounting behind, Naomi suggested it might not be safe to go further but a few moments later it became clear we had come through he breakers already.... phew ! Motored over to a beach and just as ... read more

Up early Fridayand we were underway just before 7am. Headed north out of the Sandy Straits between Little and Big Woody Islands. History and lighthouse buffs may be interested to know Big Woody Island has Queensland's 2nd oldest lighthouse on it, but its no longer in use.Got the sails up and with 15 knots of wind behind were doing a reasonable speed of around 5 knots. This was perfect sailing - small waves, clear skies under full sail. Unfortunately the bureau's prediction of 10-15 knots did not maintain itself and by around 11 am when we were now into Harvey Bay it has dropped to about 8 knots and progress was slow.Another yacht caught us up, didn't know how he had done it under just the front sail until he was close enough that we could ... read more

Up early again yesterday Wednesday to leave about an hour before high tide, to give us plenty of water under the keel and also so the currents could flush us out when we reached the mouth of the river into The Sandy Straight again. I had talked to Brett previously at the marina about the markers not matching the chart and he said quite a few had been washed away with the flood in January and probably wouldn't trust them as he wasn't sure if they had been put back in the right places yet. Fortunately I remembered that the chart plotter leaves a track of where the boat has been so we were able to follow this, from our trip up the river, with confidence. Bit of grey day with scattered showers but the plan ... read more

Was up early this morning again, but this time with some purpose. It was a cool night and mist drifted along the still river water. Started getting the boat ready as the weather forecast was still favourable. Popped back to the marina, dumped off some rubbish, collected another 20 litres of water and hoped to say goodbye to Brett (the marina manager) but his boat looked closed up so I think he was still in bed. Anchor up and headed up the river saying goodbye to Maryborough. This has been the longest we have been anchored in any one place... ever! A beautiful clear sunny day but still cool. Had to dodge debris in the river in places again, mostly branches. We did plan to anchor at Beaver Rocks which we could see had about 20 ... read more

Well as the title suggests we are still in Maryborough. With strong winds blowing various wrong directions at our potential next anchorages in the Sandy Straits or Harvey Bay we have decided to stay put. Weather has been like a British summer, not very warm, often cloady, with frequent showers. Despite this, life on the river here has been quite nice and we have had lots of time to explore this lovely little historic town, but we feel we have been here long enough now and will probably head down the river tomorrow. Our first full day here was a Thursday which was good timing as this is market day in Maryborough and they have the steam train running along the portside. Tied up at the marina and walked the 10 minutes to the townhall and ... read more

Another 2 days of windy weather and scattered showers. Saw a news feed from the Gold Coast about the beaches getting battered by bad weather so makes us appreciate that we are sheltered by Fraser Island. And also that we got over the Wide Bay Bar when we did as otherwise we would be spending at least a week in Mooloolaba waiting for conditions to improve. With the weather not showing signs of improving soon we have extra time to sight-see in this area. Tuesday after some tasty banana pikelets we took the dingy north as there was a "disused log-dump worth seeing" according to the cruising guide and also an old shipwreck. Stopped off to explore Buff Creek and at its mouth jumped out on the tiny beach there. Naomi found me some new shorts. ... read more

Was watching a British documentary about dogs last night with Martin Clunes. He "went all the way to Australia" to visit Fraser Island to see dingos. Was odd to see this TV program from the homeland visiting an island that we were actually at. Up on time today (Monday) to leave Garry's. The French catamaran "First Trax" that we originally anchored behind was running his engines again - I assume he was charging his batteries like he had yesterday afternoon. We cranked up the engine, pulled up the anchor ...by hand! (the new bolt for the stripper fitted well but now the other bolt needs replacing - and the winch itself only worked briefly too), and finally left Garry's cautiously via the shallow but slightly quicker northern entrance. Then turned north and continued to follow the ... read more

Well the few days of bad weather seems to be forever increasing and we are still hiding out at Garry's Anchorage S25 37.84 E152 58.34 Friday - I couldn't sleep well so got to see beautiful calm dawn. After some light rain, a rainbow and a late breakfast, we headed back to the camping area, now better clothed and with "Rid" to fend off the mossies. Followed the track south which was sign-posted closed to cars as the bridge was not safe. Found the bridge as the forest gave way to marsh land. Starting to get an appreciation of Alex's stamina for walking. Turned back quite soon after the bridge as we started to get an appreciation of our stamina for carrying Alex! We returned to the boat as the wind started to build and this ... read more

After Tuesday's blog entry we took the dingy for another trip. Before this I was in the toilet and opened up the ceiling hatch to say hello to Alex as he was roaming overhead - he replied by dropping a dried bird turd on my head! Headed south to Bullock Point, the spot where the Fraser Island ferry ties up at night time. Alex's toy boat accompanied us as usual and this time he got to trail the boat behind us in the water, though Naomi seemed to enjoy doing this more than him. Went to look for an old pier that was on the map but didn't find it. Got back to the boat as night fell just in time to put on the anchor light. Yesterday we woke to a grey day with light ... read more
