Day 49-24th October Well we were rather abruptly woken up by the bus’s trolly dolly that we were at Nazca so we bid the girls goodbye and a safe journey and exited the bus... off the bus went and we were left at 06:00 in the middle of a dusty town with no real plans other than to get a plane over the lines so we immediately jumped in a cab and raced for the airport excited as two little school children on the way to Disneyland. Although very early there were a couple of companies selling tickets so Liz went through the names of the reputable companies to use, Air Diana, Travel Air, Aero Paracas and finally Air Perunas. All others were off limits as they had failed safety checks after the recent crashes. We ... read more

Day 48-23rd October Well blimey we were shattered! We had a bit of a lay in but had A) become very used to waking up at 05:00 and B) needed to pack and check out by 11:00 so we were up and eating brekkie by 08:00, boy did my shoulders, feet and knees hurt but it felt good to be on solid ground since I had spent the previous two days feeling like a monkey with vertigo, and one thing I can say about the point hostels is that the food is not arf’ bad! I forget the lady’s name who cooks at that hostel but she and her two boys are very nice and she makes a cracking scrambled egg, the only thing its missing is brown sauce. Once we’d scoffed our breakfasts (I had ... read more

Day 44-47-19th-22nd October So with a poisoned husband, we did very little for the next couple of days. We had planned to move on to Arequipa the day after the Lake Titicaca tour, but with Ellory in such bad shape we decided to stay put and wait for his stomach to get better before we risked the 6 hour bus journey. Bless him, he really wasn’t very well, but eventually progressed from eating nothing and only drinking water, to some pasta with tomato and tuna sauce and finally onto a meal in a restaurant in the centre of Puno, which I believe was called the Inca Cafe. The food was pretty damn tasty, but the presentation, holy cow it blew posh London restaurants right out of the water. I was gutted as I didn’t have my ... read more

Day 43-18th October At 04:00 I was (without being too graphic) awoken by tummy trouble, it was most certainly the veggie food, either they had put peanuts in it or the food was unclean or off somehow, I couldn’t taste any nuts in it but either way I must urge anyone going to Puno NOT to go to the veggie restaurant no matter how good Alfredo says it is, the people were nice but the food wasn’t nice and it made me ill... very ill. We had to be ready for our tour at 06:00 and I was unsure if I should actually go, Liz said I could stay behind and she would go on her own but I really wanted to see Titicaca so took some Imodium and braved the terrible tummy cramps, in retrospect ... read more

Day 39-42-14th-17th October So we arrived back in La Paz, smelling to high heaven, sleep deprived and having fantasies about a hot shower and a comfy bed. We hadn’t booked into a hostel in La Paz but had a leaflet for somewhere called the Brew Hostel which looked nicer than The Point where we had previously stayed so we walked around the corner from the bus station to check it out. They had no free rooms, dammit. No problem, we’ll head back to the Point, we thought. We gave them a call, no room, tried another hostel, no room. We were starting to get annoyed at this point; we just wanted a double room with an ensuite, is that so much to ask?! We eventually found a room at the Onkel Inn Hostel which at 25 ... read more

Day 38-13th October Christ Alive that was an absolutely freezing night! The temperature dropped to about -7°C and with no heating you can imagine how cold it was. Once again the beds had lots of blankets and we had our sleeping bags, so I was quite pleasantly warm, however I ended up having to sleep with my head under the covers because if I didn’t, my head froze! So when we had to get up at 5:30am to hit the road again, I don’t think any of us wanted to leave our warm beds. However this was our last day and it was a very long way back to Uyuni (8 hours) and we needed to get going. We’d all slept in our clothes and just got straight out of bed, packed our sleeping bags away, ... read more

Day 37-12th October (Salar De Uyuni tour day two) (Apologies for the delay R&F who paid for this excursion as a wedding prezzie for Liz and I, I already wrote this and the computer automatically shut down on me halfway through... thus losing the lot yesterday so I took a break to calm down and rewrite it!) So after a good day climbing trains, looking at cacti and balancing on water bottles we had an early and salty night, mostly because we had an early start! “Hola, Buenos Dias Chica’s y Chico, Vamos” was the first thing we heard while it was still dark, Snr Don Phillipe was getting our breakfast ready on our salty table which consisted of Juice, tea, bread and Jam. We were all a bit bleary eyed and staggered around aimlessly getting ... read more

Day 36-11th October This will probably be a 3 parter, prepare yourselves!! So we arrived in the town of Uyuni at 8am. Uyuni is such a strange place, if it wasn’t for the salt flats, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t exist at all. However when we arrived, Maritza, the representative from Expediciones Empexsa, the company we had booked our tour with, was there to welcome us and take us to the office where we would pick up our jeep. First impressions weren’t great to be honest with this company. They were friendly but it seemed very disorganised. We were meant to leave at 10am, but in fact we didn’t leave until midday, and no one really let us know why. Also, we actually ended up doing the tour with a company called Blue Line as they ... read more

Day 33-35-8th-10th October Well after our late night/early morning we just spent the next day chilling out. My watch had stopped working that night and we’d really had no idea how late it was until we left the nightclub and it was daylight! Whoops. Wasted day then, however we’d had a good night. The next two days were taken up with more shopping and planning our next move. La Paz is so cheap and the goods are so beautiful that it is almost impossible to resist! I could have quite happily bought a lot more, but the fact we have to carry it around for nearly another 3 weeks put me off a bit. However we did end up buying 2 small holdalls made of alpaca. Couldn’t help it, they’re great! So we are now carrying, ... read more

Day 32-7th October We woke up not particularly early had showers and stuff, I stayed up last night and spoke to Tom about the many ways the world is going to end and society will fall, most of which are apparently linked to the new world order. I like the odd conspiracy theory now and then but I do worry sometimes when I talk to people that will believe anything they see on youtube, I believe in taking what the government feed us through Media with a pinch of salt but I also believe that to be true of the David Ike’s of the world a little bit of good observation can get blown out of all proportion and then the next thing you know the world is run by lizards... anyway although I fear a ... read more
