Bangkok, Thailand, 10–15 January Yangon, Burma 15–17 January Considering the flight from Bangkok to Yangon took barely an hour, it was quite an eventful journey. After we boarded, a very rosy-cheeked, chubby, 40-something man got on and sat on our row in the aisle seat next to C. By way of introduction, he offered C his hand and said very loudly: “British, are you?” Without waiting for an answer, he then leaned over C and addressed me in a conspiratorial fashion. “Now, you know what would be great?” he said in a creepy and very patronising way, “If I could sit in that seat,” points to my seat, “when we land.” Without missing a beat, he then continued, very self-importantly. “See, I’m a journalist.” He placed great emphasis on the last word and then sat back ... read more

Siem Reap, Cambodia, 7 January-10 January We had ended up leaving Phnom Penh later than planned after spending a very leisurely morning sitting outside having brunch and watching the world go by. This world included many stray dogs, a monk on a balcony across the road washing his robes and hanging them up to dry and elderly men pedalling past on rickshaws. We then spent a fair bit of time in a French designer boutique that was housed in an old colonial building (is there any other in Phnom Penh?) and contained the most incredible array of dresses I have ever seen. A guy we met in Samui had told us about this shop weeks before as his wife was "obsessed" with the clothes and I think C had been dreading the moment we set foot ... read more

Phnom Penh, 31 December–7 January On New Year's Day we had a lie-in and then wandered down to town along the riverside for brunch. On the way we passed an extremely hungover man, who was laid precariously and somewhat inexplicably on the wall above the river. I'm thinking he had had a heavy New Year's celebration. It was tempting to wake him up to stop him falling off the wall into the river but it was even more tempting to stop and take photos. So that's what we did. We headed to Friends for brunch. The philanthropy scene is big in Cambodia and the city is full of hippy, do-good types who are involved all sorts of humanitarian activities. Friends is a big name on the philanthropy scene; it's a restaurant with a fantastic concept behind ... read more

Bangkok, 27-31 December Phnom Penh, 31 December-7 January After leaving Koh Samui and island life and spending a heady few days' stopover in Bangkok, where we managed to do a whole lot and not very much at all, we boarded a plane on New Year's afternoon bound for Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Cambodia is a place I have dreamt of going to for years and we were both on a real high but nothing could have prepared me for the impact that this very unique country would have on me over just ten days. The Cambodians we met during our time in the country were all lovely, friendly and accommodating people – with the stark exception of anyone who wore a uniform. This was demonstrated to us by the very first Cambodian people we met; the immigration ... read more

Ko(h) Samui, 8-27 December Let's play a game. Imagine the most tranquil place on earth. Perhaps it is a tropical island, a place where palm trees sway in the breeze and pose lazily against the white sands. A place where everybody is so happy and relaxed that the mundanity of everyday life is quickly forgotten and replaced with pure and simple relaxation. Perhaps there is fresh fruit and exotic food in abundance, all whipped up in seconds without you even having to step foot off the beach. Maybe there's even a cocktail list populated with drinks that contain every fruit you can think of (papaya margarita, anyone?) Perhaps there are hidden corners of the island with lush tropical foliage that remains untouched and where it seems no one else on earth has ever stepped. Where the ... read more

Hanoi, Vietnam - 1-5 December I am stood in front of a fishmonger. She is wearing white overalls, has her hair wrapped up away from her face and she is smiling broadly as she points me out the different types of fish laid on ice in the cooler in front of her. This would not be that strange in of itself but we are in the departure lounge of the domestic airport terminal in Ho Chi Minh City. As we then walked through to the terminal and found Pringles under the section 'Vietnamese Traditional Snacks,' I began to think that logic was not so much the order of the day. Logic issues aside, the Viatnamese are some of the noisiest people I have ever encountered. They don't talk, they just shout, even when they are standing ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City December 1st 2012

I am in love. This city is intoxicating. I have dreamt of coming to Vietnam for so long – it has always been a place that has fascinated me – and from day one, when we landed in Ho Chi Minh City, it has not just met my dreams but blown them out of all tangible proportions. Having gone from the familiarity of London to the stagnancy of Dubai to the mesmerising streets of Vietnam within less than 48 hours, words are not entirely my strong point but I am truly dazzled. As soon we got there, we walked through the city streets just looking at everything. There is just so much to look at, to take in, so much going on. The colours, the noise, the constant hooting of car and bike horns, the incredible ... read more

Tuesday 27 November–Wednesday 28 November So that's it then. No more UK for the next three months. After what some might call a pretty turbulent year, we were off on a very spontaneous trip of a lifetime. Having booked our flights just a few weeks earlier and moved out of our apartment the day before, things were slightly chaotic. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. As we walked into Gatwick Airport we could not have been much more excited. Even the news of a two-and-a-half hour delay did little to dent our spirits. When it turned into a three-hour delay, we were still just as excited, albeit it slightly more impatient. When we landed in Dubai for our stopover and discovered that we had missed our connection to Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) due ... read more
