Luke + Jess + Milo

We're just a couple of kids with a dog (sort of a dog) who like to travel. We don't get to do it as often as we'd like, but we make the most of the trips we do take. Whether you're here to read about our trips or just to ensure we are still alive, we hope you find entertainment on our pages!

Off we go! It's currently 6AM and we're loading the last bit of luggage into the car for our three-day excursion back across the US, for the East Coast Reunion Tour! Look here for as many updates as I can reasonably provide from the road. (The Midwest is not known for its wi-fi or 3G coverage) We're so excited! Love you all so much and we'll see you all on the 25th!! PS Milo is not excited about being up this early...... read more

So, here we are in Cuba, Missouri. We crossed over the Mississippi last night around 7:30pm, St. Louis was very cool. Tons of roads looping around, the arch, and some very cool skeleton buildings covered in graffiti. We wished it was slightly earlier in the day so we could have a little better light for picture taking, but we also managed to get some very cool shots of the city with the lights blurring across the image. We'll post them when we get to our next destination. Drove through tons of strange strange places...we have lots of pictures. Milo, our corgi, is being great in the car, sleeping most of the journey and playing at rest stops. People love this kid and he's a ham for the attention. So far it's been a great ride. We'll ... read more

We woke up nice and early in Philly, to finish a little packing before heading to get the truck. Getting the truck turned out to be pretty easy, a 16' Penske is our chariot across the country (along with our car towed behind it)...so far, it's not the best thing, but it's an awesome adventure. A bunch of our friends came to help us load all our ridiculous amount of stuff up into the back of the truck, parked on the curb on Spruce until some cop decided to tell us we couldn't park there (even though people do all the time for hours at a time), and then across the street in a loading zone. So a HUGE thanks to all of our friends for carrying our stuff down four flights of stairs and across ... read more

I wanted to take some time to summarize our trip, from the traveler's perspective. Also, attached to this post are some photo highlights from our trip. I highly recommend the village of Stowe, and Mt. Mansfield, for a ski vacation. For anyone who lives in a city, or is overrun with commercialization, advertising, and everything else that accompanies a fast-paced lifestyle, Stowe is a refuge. The village is flavored by plenty of old-style shops (like Stowe Mercantile) and plenty of old-world charm. From its quiet Main Street with Town Hall, Church, and Visitor's Center all in a row, to its precision crafts-men and women, to its comfortable and inviting "everyone's-a-local" atmosphere. I speak for, at the very least, Jess and I when I say that we felt rejuvenated from all the stress and anxiety of city ... read more

January 8th, 2009 Today was our last full day in Stowe. It has been snowing like crazy all day and we have really been enjoying the town. We woke up slow to big heavy snowflakes falling outside our little home. Beautiful. We decided to go our to breakfast, but ended up not going far. Our legs were thankful for this. We went to the Colonial Cafe which is run by the Golden Eagle Lodge. Luke had french toast, with 4 ounces of Vermont maple syrup. Apparently your syrup portions are restricted here. I had a bagel and eggs. There were no restrictions. After breakfast we decided to drive into town and walk around for a while. After brushing four inches of snow off the car we headed out. First we went to the Little River ... read more

January 7th, 2009 Today was our last day skiing. With my calves nearly non-functional, and Jess' knee partially swollen, we started our day off with two bowls of medicine cabinet salad and decided to take it easy on the mountain today. Both of these "injuries" proved more-or-less harmless, as my calves were rendered unnecessary by the height of the ski boots (as anyone who has skied will agree, you can't really use your calves for skiing), and the swelling around Jess' knee actually helped to hold it in place. (quick note of excited personla accomplishment from Jess: "I got both my boots on all by myself today!) When we arrived at the mountain, we elected to spend the majority of our day on Spruce peak, Mansfield's sister-summit, so to speak. It is smaller, but still ... read more

January 6th, 2009 Yeah so this morning we discovered that we skied 21 miles yesterday. Which as it turns out is a lot of miles. To say the least we were both feeling a little bit sore. Nothing too bad surprisingly. Luke's calf muscles were feeling tight as were my shins. We woke up slow and ate a big breakfast to get ready for our second day out. We got onto the mountain around 10:00am and headed up Spruce Peak to get started. We went down a bunch of different blue trails and had a blast! I was getting really fast by lunch time, and Luke was loving that I was making him keep us with me some. There was also a race on the slalom hills that was a lot of fun to watch. ... read more

January 5th, 2009 *Quick addendum to last night* Last night after logging our journal entry, we went for a walk around our lodge grounds at night. We had a snowball fight, made snow angels, and re-enacted the scene from Eternal Sunshine when they lied under the stars on the frozen lake. On our way back to the room, I ran off up a hill, and was pleasantly surprised to find sleds there! I called Jess up and we rode sleds at midnight! Dear Golden Eagle Lodge - that may be your most underrated amenity! So with that taken care of, let me tell you about our first day with our new friend, Mount Mansfield. I woke up at six, but Jess was not interested in getting up, in her own words, "before the ass-crack of ... read more

January 4th, 2009 Today was our first full day in Vermont and it's not over yet. We spent the day exploring the town and getting used to the cold. Woke up to the beautiful view out our little deck area, and then decided to go for a walk to see the town. It was good to be able to enjoy the air after spending yesterday in the car. Our little home in the mountain is coincidentally on Mountain Rd/Vermont 108. We went to the lodges library and pool first to see what that is all about and then set out along the road. We walked past Pie in the Sky, Baggy Knees, and over a little covered bridge. We came to Main St/Vermont 100 which is where many of the shops in town are located. ... read more

January 3rd, 2009 Today we woke up and were greeted by 4" of fresh snow! Too bad our skiing destination was over 6 hours from where we were. We got out of bed and enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Jess' aunt and uncle. After a cup of tea, I went out to clean off the car and get us re-packed. I loaded up the car, and with a little help from Jess' uncle, we got rolling out the driveway and we were off on our way. Stowe, here we come! The snow made us both very smiley, and we were both getting very excited. After what seemed like decades of driving, we finally crossed the border (rather un-dramatically, given the one tiny sign that welcomed us to Vermont) into the state of our destination. Only ... read more
