I finally got to do one of the top things on my China To Do List (it really does exist, and will sadly not be satisfied this trip due to time constraints): Go on a river cruise up the Yangtze River to see the Three Gorges. To get to the cruise, we took a sleeper train to Chongqing (not the first sleeper train, and not the last). It is the largest municipality in the world with 29 million people (almost the size of my home country, Canada) but is not a destination that has much to offer sightseeing-wise, other than a never-ending sea of high-rises. After arriving, we had five hours to kill, so we went to a square where the bus that would take us to the boat was to pick us up. We quickly ... read more

My trip to Xi'an started with a bang (literally). The day we arrived, majority ruled and we went to go ride bicycles around the wall that surrounds the original city (approx a 14km ride). I didn't really want to (too expensive) but agreed anyways. Worst decision ever. It was going fine until my first bicycle got a flat tire. I walked 20 minutes until we found a bike rental stop to swap it out. Pushing a bicycle with a flat tire, on a seemingly never-ending wall in the middle of winter is not fun. When I finally got the swap-out bike, I just wanted to be done with the trip. We weren't even close, so I kept going and going. We were almost at the end when it happened. There was a rather large bump to ... read more

I think that visiting Beijing after spending so much time in Shanghai made me look at the city differently than I would have if I had visited it sooner. I found Shanghai and Beijing to be like night and day. Shanghai as a city is so young, everything is new and there is an energy to the city that you feel everywhere. In contrast, Beijing is steeped in history and is far calmer because of it. I liked Beijing, but it didn't energize me the way Shanghai does. When I first got to Shanghai, I found the number of people and chaotic way the streets operate overwhelming. While Beijing has just as many people and just as many cars, there is a control in the city, and it lacks the manic vibe Shanghai gives off. I ... read more

I've spent the last 4 days in Beijing, and managed to squeeze seeing a ridiculous number of sights into a short amount of time. I was in full on tourist mode, going to every major site and taking phots of every little thing. Temple of Heaven On my first full day, a miracle occured. While cold, there was a blue sky and I could see the sun. After a month in the gray of Shanghai, I relished in the weather and decided to spend the day outside where I could enjoy it to the fullest. As the Temple of Heaven is essentially a sprawling park (2.73 km2 per Wikipedia), it was the perfect place to go. I spent hours roaming the vast landscape before finally heading to the three parts that make up the temple. It ... read more

It's amazing to think that I've already finished the first 2 months of this trip and my time in Shanghai is over. (sidebar: I have also now finished my MBA... such an amazing feeling!) I figured I should mark the transition from the first part of my trip to second with some reflections on it. Shanghai is a great city. It is a great city that is evolving so fast that I'm sure the next time I am back, I will have to explore it all over again. This is the case this time around, as I had a 3 day visit 2 years ago, when there were 3 less subway lines, and quite a few skyscrapers were missing from the skyline. I wonder what it would be like living long-term in Shanghai - do they ... read more

Over the last week, I have explored several of the Shanghai markets in a bid to get all of my gift shopping finished before my winter clothing gets shipped home and I head out on the road. Exploring the markets of Shanghai has turned out to be one of my favourite activities and I wish I had started going to them sooner. Antiques Market I think one of my favourite afternoons since arriving in Shanghai was at the (no so old) antiques market. It's just a few blocks, but each stall is stuffed with everything from old dolls and trinkets, to statues and furntiure. Most of it produced to sell as "antiques", but it doesn't make exploring the market any less fun. Everywhere you look, there is something interesting to see and it's fun just to ... read more

I came to a realization earlier this week that I had less than 2 weeks left in Shanghai. I'm excited about the next part of my trip, but it shocked me to think that I've been here for almost 2 months. I also realized that there was still a lot left that I had been planning to do, but hadn't got around to. Unfortunately, this realization occurred at the same time the b-school I'm on exchange at (CEIBS) kicked into high gear, so I have been trying to cram writing papers in with doing as much as I can in the city. I finally got to the Shanghai Zoo on Thursday - Nori and I both desperately wanted to see some pandas (cliche, I know, but there's a reason its a cliche), but neither of us ... read more

A friend and I decided to go on a day trip to visit Hangzhou, a very pretty town on a very large lake (West Lake) about an hour by bullet train outside of Shanghai. While it was overall a good trip, there were definitely a few "bumps in the road" that we faced. The “Bumpy” Ride Nori and I arrived at the train station bright and early to catch the 8 a.m. bullet train. As we headed to the train, we were feeling very proud of ourselves and our team work. We had successfully purchased the tickets through a combination of Nori's Mandarin (not much, but enough) and my iPhone. We were also proud of successfully navigating the train station through my ability to match the Chinese characters on our tickets to the information boards. We ... read more

The last day of the Spring Festival is marked by the Lantern Festival (gotta love a country that has a festival within a festival). In Shanghai, the Lantern Festival epicentre is Yu Garden (a wonderful tourist trap that is a must see while in Shanghai), where, thanks to their wonderful sponsor Pepsi, massive lantern sculptures are on display across the garden and surrounding buildings. A couple of friends and I decided to shell out our ¥80 ($13 - go big or go home), and join the crushing crowds to see the sculptures. I have to say, it was pretty cool. Each sculpture showed a different Chinese story (my friend Mingming identified a few, but my brain was in photo-mode so nothing was retained), they were very intricate and thanks to modern technology had moving parts, lasers, ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay February 4th 2012

Filipino food is not so much an adventure as it is yummy goodness. For a pescotarian like me, it was heaven being somewhere with such rich seafood and fish offerings. It was also refreshing after Shanghai, which has been challenging because of the language barrier and the love of pork. While in Boracay, I got to eat some of the freshest seafood I have ever had. On our last night there, I devoured a crab that was so fresh and so well-seasoned I thought I was in heaven (and I’m not kidding about the devouring, I really should have taken an after picture, it was a mess). Another favourite was Sinigang Gambas - probably one of the best sauces I have ever had on shrimp. They served it at our hotel and I started to have ... read more
