Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián June 17th 2014

We started out very early as we had to walk a few blocks to the Maria Christina Hotel to meet our guide at 8am for an all day Rioja wine tour. Our guide from San Sebastián foods was Lourdes and the driver was Pedro. Our group included a young couple from Australia and a gal from Cleveland. Off we went in a large Mercedes Benz van on our discovery journey of Rioja wines. We drove about 1.5 hours through countryside that varied from reminding us of Colorado with the rolling hills by Genesee; to some pretty good sized mountains to vineyards as far as the eye can see. Very beautiful and as much as we dislike long coach rides while on holiday, this was really enjoyable. We arrived at our first vineyard of the day, Muga ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián June 16th 2014

Another magnificent day. We awoke and immediately pulled the curtains to enjoy the sea view of this beautiful bay. There was a lot of activity going on early in the a.m. A street sweeper/washer was cleaning the boardwalk and a large piece of machinery was combing the sand (remember space balls movie where they were combing the desert!). The tide is really varied here as in the early a.m. it was very high and minimized the size of the beach as the waves splashed up towards the sea wall. By noon, the tide was so low that it was out away from the sea wall about 100 feet. We ate lunch at La Perla right on the boardwalk and enjoyed 2 glasses wine with lunch and the waitress told us that by 3-4pm the tide would ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián June 15th 2014

We arose early so we could eat breakfast before we had to have our bags outside our cabin for the crew to take them to the staging area. Katell arranged for a cab at 9am to take us to the bordeaux st jean gare (train) station. He dropped us right at the car rental side of the station. Unfortunately it's Sunday and they open at 10am so we had to stand outside and wait. I was annoyed we were so early but by 9:30 there were probably 30 people in line and we were #2. All thanks to Jim wanting to be there early, Yeah, so glad he insisted we get there early. The agent gave us a really nice Opal SUV and to top it off the numbers on the license plate is 077!!! That's ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Bordeaux June 14th 2014

This is our final day of the cruise and we have a very exciting day planned. We took the optional tour today to attend a cooking lesson with a Michelin 3 star chef of the Bordeaux Grand Hotel. Only 12 participants. We took the city tram to the hotel in the city center with Katell the cruise director. The Grand hotel is the finest in the city. We were taken to the kitchen of the Michelin restaurant. We were greeted by the head chef, sous chef and pastry chef. We were each given chef aprons to wear with the hotel name and logo! How fun. They explained what we would be cooking and dining during our 4 hour lesson. To start we each peeled and broke a large white asparagus in preparation for the soup we ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Sauternes June 13th 2014

This is the day to expand our pallet and go out and taste the sweet wines of Bordeaux, the Sauternes. The boat sailed during the night from bordeaux to cadillac. We took a lovely drive through the countryside of this region and it was just beautiful. Everywhere you look as far as the eye can see are acres and acres of beautiful vineyards and the French chateaus with the grey slate roofs. We stopped at one vineyard for a tour of the winemaking process and cave along with a wine tasting. The real treat of the day was the lunch that Uniworld arranged at Chateau d'Arche. Ooh la la was it fantastic. Three courses each paired with a sweet Sauterne wine. Now, I know you would think you could not enjoy that much sweet wine but ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Saint-Emilion June 12th 2014

Ooh la la!!! What a fantastic day in Saint Emilion. We started our day with a walking tour of the town with our guide, Pauline. This is a very old and very historic town with a lot of stories to be told on Emilion and his miracles. We toured a cave that he lived on as he wanted to live out his life in peace and alone. Below the bell tower we entered the cathedral that was dug by hand out of the stone and is completely below the surface and is the largest underground gothic cathedral in the world. It was in its glory painted with religious drawings but during the French Revolution it was vandalized. The revolutionists scratched the limestone to get to the sulphate from the walls and mixed it to make gunpowder. ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Bergerac June 11th 2014

Today we went to the charming town of Bergerac. The ride to this town on the motor coach was about 1 1/2 hours which seemed like a long journey. About 30 minutes in we stopped for a 'technical stop' or 'happy stop' or 'Water closet' or restroom...we thought the technical stop was quite funny. Upon our arrival we were given a walking tour by our guide. Quite a bit of history over the centuries with war between French and the English and then the Christians and the Protestants. After our walking tour, we head to a restaurant that Susan made reservations for lunch. We walked a few short blocks and located the restaurant, L'Imparfait restaurant. We were seated outside under an umbrella and the matre d' pulled out the chalk board with the 3 course pre ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Blaye June 10th 2014

We really enjoyed a quiet day today. After breakfast we joined the easy walking tour as we went to a small villages Of Bourg. Unfortunately it was closed and seemed to us like a wasted stop. We then had a stop and visit of what this town is well known for a Unisec world heritage site a Citadel. The fortification was commissioned in the 17th century by Louis XIV to protect the city of Bordeaux from enemies sailing up the river from the Atlantic Ocean. We returned to the ship and really enjoyed a leisurely afternoon getting caught up on personal items including this blog. We napped, watched a movie as well. We met our friends in the lounge and chatted. We were thrilled that Ward brought several hand made magnificent wooden pens that he hand ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Pauillac June 9th 2014

We slept in to 8am today and went down for breakfast. We hung out this a.m. And had lunch on the top deck today. Our tour to the Medoc wine region left at 1pm and we headed off in the motor coach with our guide for the day, Priscilla. She explained to us that in the 1600's the French brought in Dutch engineers to drain what was the swamp of Medoc. Then in the 1700's they started to plant vines where the former swamp was. Medoc means the middle area between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. This region receives no snow, lots of rain is humid. The wines made here are always blended. Today, most wineries are very large with several hectares each. They are mostly owned by corporations such as banks, insurance companies, ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Pauillac June 8th 2014

Today we started the day with a simple continental breakfast of mini croissants, mini sweet rolls, yogurt, orange juice and coffee. We met Jane and Bill in the hotel lobby at 11am and waited for our cab to arrive to meet Ward and Susan and at La Table du latoir bistro located at the Haut Smith Laffitte winery. The winery, boutique hotel, Caudalie spa and bistro are located about 35 minutes outside of Bordeaux. We arrived easily and early enough to wander about the centuries old property and take photos. We enjoyed a really great lunch with good food and especially wine with our friends. The reservations were at noon and we finally realized at 3pm that it was time for us to say farewell to this lovely property and depart. We had the hotel (small ... read more
