Day 7 - April 21 Hoorn, Netherlands We awoke and looked out our cabin wines and all we could see was open water as far as we could see. Usually on river cruises you see land on both sides of the ship. We realized that during the night we entered the North Sea. On day 1 they tell us that river cruises don't need life boats because the shorelines are not far from the ship. Well, we could not see land anywhere on the horizon. We arrived in the charming town of Hoorn at 7am. Very picturesque and quaint. We went on a morning walking tour with a local guide. The walking tour was about 2 1/2 hours through the most historic parts of the town. Like all other cities in this country, there are canals ... read more

Day 6 April 20 Haarlem, Keukonhof Gardens We left the port in Amsterdam at 4am and motored to the town of Haarlem Holland, arriving at 8am. This is an exciting day. We boarded the tour busses and took the 45 minute drive to the famed Keukenhof gardens. These gardens are only open 3 months every year and during spring when tulips bloom. Over a million visitors come year from all over the world during these spring months. The bulb farmers of Holland have planted 7 million bulbs in these extensive gardens. These gardens were truly a magnificent visual overload of beauty and awe. We spent a total of 5 hours wandering through all the paths and enjoying every step. I will upload some photos but I wished I could share the fragrance of the gardens particularly ... read more

Day 5 April 19 last day in Amsterdam Today we decided to take the extended half day walking tour. We walked from the boat at 9am to the central station and took a tram #9 to the Rembrandt square where the life size nights watch statues are from the famous painting. We walked through several wonderful areas of the city and toured a really beautiful house and museum by the Loon family. We seemed to walk for miles and really enjoyed the day and our guide but we're glad to head back to the boat around 1:30pm. We were actually exhausted and went to lunch then to our cabins to rest and nap. This is the big welcome evening gala and we all went to the lounge for cocktails and passed appetizers. Dinner was wonderful and ... read more

Day 4 April 18 - Amsterdam River Duchess This day is a transfer day from the hotel to the cruise. We will board the Uniworld River Duchess for the 10 day cruise through Netherlands and Belgium. We arose, made a cappuccino, showered, packed and went down to breakfast. This hotel has a very nice buffet breakfast. Many European hotels only offer continental style breakfast of cereal, cold cuts, hard rolls and yoghurt. Here we have enjoyed scrambled eggs, sausage, baked beans (I know who wants beans for breakfast), fresh fruit, cereal, many breads for toast, ham and cheese, etc. They even offered fresh baked donuts!! We never buy or eat donuts so here, we each splurged and had one and loved it! We sat and chatted with Bill and Jane until 11am and then had to ... read more

Day 3 April 17 Amsterdam First full day in Amsterdam and I awoke not feeling well. Dang. We went down for breakfast but I hardly felt like eating anything. Enjoyed a pot of tea and toast. We delayed our days activity with Bill and Jane until 2pm and I took a nap. Thank goodness I felt better and so we met in the lobby at 2pmand walked over to the central train station where we would catch the #5 tram to the Rijksmuseum. A beautiful museum with a large collection of historic Dutch art. Outside the museum there are lovely gardens with tulips blooming!!! Yes, tulips are blooming. We have had several friends tell us that they came in the spring to see the tulips only to be disappointed. We stopped for a snack and water ... read more

Day 1 and 2 April 15 & 16 - Travel DaysWhat a beautiful day in Denver this morning. But, after hearing the upcoming weather report, we looked at each other and said "let's get the heck out of here"! Denver is expecting snow starting this afternoon through he weekend. Unbelievable!! We showered, finished packing and waited for our Anthony's limo driver to come and take us away to the airport. Our driver, Eric was very chatty and once he learned that Jim worked with NASA back on the glory days he just couldn't ask enough questions. Our experience with United and TSA couldn't have been better on this trip. This is our first vacation after receiving our GOES cards. (Global online entry system). In January, Jim and I completed our application, were interviewed, finger printed and ... read more

Last day.... Mixed emotions for sure. We got up to the alarm this a.m., got cleaned up and dressed and went down to breakfast. Today we had an omelette with our continental breakfast. We went back to our room, unplugged our electronics and closed up our bags. Check out went smooth and Jim used his remaining Euros toward the hotel folio balance. We really loved the Hotel Urban and room 433. The doorman flagged a taxi for us for the ride to the airport. Today the bellman from Bulgaria was not on duty. He was so nice. On our first day he was helping to get our bags into the hotel and commented to Jim as he was trying to assist "I have been trained to do this", how cute is that. Ride to the airport ... read more

We slept in, went down for breakfast and showered. Then we stopped by the business center to print our boarding passes for tomorrow departure flights. The hotel indicated that it is a 30 minute taxi ride to the airport and it is a mandated fixed price of 30 Euros. A leisure start to this our final day. I am wearing down and getting stiff and sore so we decided easy does it today. We finally wandered out and decided to go to the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. It is close within walking as just a few blocks. Everything here when asked how far is 5-10 minutes when really it is much longer! This museum is about 15 minutes from our hotel. We both got in with senior pricing so 14 euros total. Age has its benefits, we spent ... read more

Today is a historic and important day for Spain. King Juan Carlos has ruled for 39 years and abdicated the power to his son Prince Felipe. We are so lucky that the ceremony for Felipe to take the oath and become King took place just across the street. The police presence was absolutely unbelievable as they were posted everywhere on the street, on building rooftops, flying around in helicopters and on bicycles, motorcycles and cars. We quickly headed up to the hotel rooftop terrace on 6th floor and found a great corner where we could watch the pageantry and preparation. We watched several groups of military, the band, some in dark uniforms, some white, some in green then the color guard. We also saw the 1920's style Rolls Royce convertible that King Felipe and Queen Letizia ... read more

Another really early morning as we had train tickets to Madrid that departed beautiful San Sebastián at 7:30am. Last night we showered, packed and laid out our clothes for today to quicken our departure to the train station. The hotel called a cab for us and it arrived quickly. Interestingly, he shoved all 4 of our luggage into the front passenger seat then proceeded to give the big ones a kick to close the car door. Traveling is an adventure and you see it all. The train station was pretty close and only cost 9 euros. We found our check in, tickets were in order and we headed to platform 2 and waited the arrival of the 1st leg of our train to Zaragoza. While standing we began chatting with a very nice lady on holiday, ... read more
