One of the things I wanted to do in melbourne before I left was to go to a theatre to see something. I had heard a lot about Draculas as they have been around for almost 3 decades and there is one on the Gold coast as well. It's a dinner theatre comedy show musical with a twist haha. Once you arrive you are ushered into the upstairs bar area where you can have a drink first. As the name suggests all the staff and the decor is dressed up in a vampire kind of way. Really fun! Then, a ghost train like ride takes you down to the theatre. So much fun but also terrifying! They also don't tell you that they take a picture at one of the scarier points. Quite funny. We then ... read more

Melbourne is home to some very popular little laneways which have everything from little shops, to cafes to bars. Leahanne and I joined a walking tour of the laneways to get some history on them and Melbourne. We got to try some chocolate, discover some neat little shops that you would never even know were there and learn some really interesting history. I now know why Melbourne's CBD grid was set on an angle. There once was a creek that flowed from the Yarra river and the man in charge of making Melbourne decided to put the road over the creek which was on an angle. The tour finished up at a little cafe for lunch. We ate our lunch and then Leahanne decided to take me to a couple of her fav laneway bars. One ... read more

I checked out of the hostel and returned my cute little car. I didn't want to give it back! I walked into the CBD of Hobart and had a look around at the shops, had lunch and a coffee. By then it was time to head back to the hostel, grab my stuff and get to the bus to the airport. All in all it was such a great week in Tasmania even though it was quiet. I'm really glad that I was able to get to this beautiful spot. It reminds me a lot of Canada and New Zealand. Well, my time in Australia is wrapping up. I'm such a lucky girl to be able to have seen so much of Australia. I can now say that I have been to every state and territory ... read more

Well after my night in the hostel with a great sleep on my own I got ready to head out. It was a bit of a miserable day out. My first stop was Queenstown to fill up on gas. The road out of queenstown climbs up a bit of a mountain and you can stop part way and take pictures. But the rain kind of ruined the pics but still pretty. I arrived in the Franklin Gordon national park and the first stop was Nelson Falls. It was still raining away but I decided to do the 20 minute walk anyways. The falls were really powerful and beautiful so it was worth the walk. The rain started to let up so I headed to the next stop. This was a bit more of a hike to ... read more

I woke up to a very cold and cloudy morning. Even though it was only 11 degrees I decided to do the walk around dove lake anyways. Good thing i'm Canadian and know how to layer up! I drove to where the original cabin is where there is a memorial and the grave of the founder of Cradle mountain as a national park is. He was an Austrian man married to an Australian woman. As I pulled up to do the dove lake circuit walk the clouds were obstructing my view of Cradle mountain. Good thing I came yesterday and saw it in the sunshine. I wrapped my scarf around my neck and headed off. It's a beautiful hike around the lake at the base of Cradle Mountain. It's meant to be a 2 hour walk ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Beauty Point September 18th 2011

I was up early again and headed to Cataract gorge which is right in the city of Launceston. There is a suspension bridge, a chairlift to the other side and some walking tracks. I didn't have much time so I just walked across the suspension bridge and back. It's a beautiful spot but after the accident gorges just aren't my favorite place to be. After snapping a few pictures I headed up north from Launceston to Beauty Point where the Platypus house is located. It's a conservation facility for Platypus and a couple of echidnas. Platypus are such an interesting animal. Although their duck bills look hard they are actually more soft like leather and have thousands of little sensories. They are blind under water as they have to keep their eyes closed. It's rare to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Bay of Fires September 17th 2011

Up early again and headed out of Bicheno and up as far north on the coast as you can drive. St Helens is the main town in the area. I drove around the area checking out all the beautiful scenery. Binalong bay is the gateway to the bay of fires which was named that because of the explorer who discovered the bay and mistook the colouring on the rocks for fire. It's a very beautiful spot but I was unlucky to get a very cloudy day but it was still pretty. The beach here is stunning and once again I seemed to have it all to myself! On the drive back into St Helens I spotted a little echidna crossing the road. I stopped and let him waddle across while trying to capture a picture of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Freycinet National Park September 16th 2011

I was up early and packed up my car. I headed up the east coast towards Freycinet National park which is home to Wineglass Bay. I lucked out with a sunny day but it wasn't that warm! Very windy too. I passed through some very cute little towns and stopped to take some pictures of the convict built spiky bridge. Many of the structures and roads in Tasmania were built by convicts. There is just so much history on this little island of Australia! The coast here is amazing. The colour of the water is so beautiful. I arrived in Bicheno and booked into the hostel there for the night and then drove out to Freycinet National park. I popped into the visitor center and bought my national park pass. I was also told that the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Port Arthur September 15th 2011

I was up early to get on the road and head over to Port Arthur. It's about an hour and a half drive from Hobart and makes a good day trip. It's a beautiful drive to get out there and I had no problems finding my way. Port Arthur was set up in the 1830's as a place to send convicts from England. Well, most were sent to Hobart first but if they were caught a second time they were sent to Port Arthur. It was a convict camp set up for repeat offenders. The convicts were put to work being blacksmiths and various other trades. If they misbehaved they were sent to work on the chain gangs. As the years went by and they found that giving the inmates slashes on the back to punish ... read more

I arrived very early in the morning into Hobart, Tasmania. My airport shuttle took me to my hostel and I was able to check in straight away. I walked down to the car rental place and picked up my little car for the week. My first stop was to drive down to the information center to get maps and info and things I need to see in Tasmania. I picked up heaps of brochures and walked around the waterfront area. It was a warmish (18 degrees) but with a cold wind day in Hobart with a few clouds in the sky. I decided to head to the grocery store and stock up now that I've got a car for the week. Grabbed some lunch and then decided to make the drive up to Mount Wellington which ... read more
