Instant coffee, send thought of the day, eat soupy eggs and off to work... Still no moose! They're hard to see heading to work since it's still dark, but none sighted on the way home either :( Hopefully we'll have a sighting before this trip is over. Nothing too special to report from work today. Other than I'd bought a travel mug earlier in the trip to help me survive the long morning drive. Well, the best deal I could find is one of the "picture mugs" that has a plastic liner where you can insert photos. Well, I don't have, or really need, any photos. So I decided to print out some useful Finnish phrases and put them in my mug. It's come in handy and I'm slowly learning to pronounce, "Ilmatyynyalukseni on taynna ankeriaita." ... read more

Mondays are still Mondays in Finland, i.e. they still last forever and involve a lot of coffee and yawning. So needless to say not much to report on today. After work Dave and I decided to wander for chow in the opposite direction from our hotel that we usually go. This took us pretty far away without finding anyplace that looked worth having dinner at. We did find a bar to stop in and have a drink, but they didn't have much for food. As we were getting done with a beer the bar started to get hopping with bingo players. Yes, bingo. If we could've translated "B4" from Finnish we may have stayed. Later questioning confirned that bingo is not common in Finnish bars. Continued wandering further from the hotel found us in a residential ... read more

After last night let's just say I slept in and missed breakfast at the hotel. Finally getting up and rolling around noon I hit the streets looking for a barber. Remember I'd given up on the damned clippers. In my walking around Tampere I'd seen plenty of beauty shops, but nothing that looked like a truly straight male type of barber. I finally found one not far off the main drag in Tampere called "Paturi Only Male". It looked reasonable, but of course about everything is closed on Sundays and it's hours didn't fit with my work schedule so it'd have to be somewhere else or wait until next weekend. Who cares... It's time for food. I found a place called "Sevilla" close to the hotel. Seems like a chain, but it's not bad... Mostly Spanish ... read more

I got all caught up on sleep, finally. Cleaned up and wandered down for a quick breakfast in the hotel. Runny eggs; these could become an issue. Finnish food so far is great, but their idea of scrambled eggs is a half-poached runny mess. They're not all that bad, but harried work mornings call for some familiarity after a while. I think I may start throwing a plate of them in the microwave and see what happens. After breakfast I hit the street to find a voltage converter. Here's the history: I need a voltage converter because I brought my clippers so I can do my own homegrown haircuts. This is the only device I brought that doesn't have a built in voltage converter. Well... I brought a damned voltage converter: Jensen JEN1600, per its advertisement ... read more

Easy and short day at work today. The company we're here with had an employee appreciation event and were going to the theater in Tampere at night so most people left early. Dave and I took advantage of leaving early to try and make it home in time to make a weekly status telecon with St Louis. We didn't make it in time, and guess who's fault it was? Yes, the Prius again! One of my biggest adventures so far is getting gas into the car. Leave it up to a hybrid to be tricky on taking gas. First the Prius has a hidden gas tank door opener button... And when you push it... There are lots of beeps, like you left the lights on or something? I don't F'n know... but it finally stopped beeping. ... read more

Thursday is Pea Soup Day across Finland. Apparently the Armed Forces serve pea soup with pancakes (and Lingonberry jam) every Thursday. It's made from green peas in Finland and yellow peas if you're in Sweden. Story has it that this originally started as a religious thing in preparation for fasting, but there's also a story of a Swedish King whose death is said to have come from eating a bowl of poisoned pea soup, maybe on a Thursday? Kicker is... neither Dave or I tried the pea soup today, but we were affirmed that it would be available next Thursday, as well as the one after that and you get the idea... Leaving work I got nabbed in a speed trap :( The Prius is such a damned beast it's hard to keep it under 40 ... read more

A good first night in Finland! My room was quiet, the bed was very comfy and they don't overdo it with pillows. I stuck with the pillows I had, even though they offer a "pillow menu" that I'll experiment with later. Well, first thing I got the coffee going... Like my trip to Australia the in-room coffee consists of instant coffee or tea and a hot pot. It's funny how European instant coffee is better than most American brewed coffee. The shower is definitely workable, not stereotypical European where you have to squat, sit, whatever while you wrestle around with your shower-on-a-hose. This is on a hose, but it has an adjustable holder to turn it into a normal shower. Now Dave has a tub/shower in his twin bed room, my king bed room only has ... read more

Short entry as it was a short day... I woke up just to decline breakfast on the airplane and go back to sleep. Woke up an hour or so later on approach to London's Heathrow Airport. Once on the ground I grabbed my backpack and headed straight away to the lounge to spend my couple hour layover. My flight to Helsinki ended up being about an hour late so I took a short nap before they started boarding. Quick flight, just a couple hours, and I was in Helsinki, albeit at 1830 instead of the planned 1630. My bags came thru in good order and getting thru customs consisted of walking thru a gate that said "Nothing to Claim." No questions, nothing, nice n' easy. I made it to Europcar and got my Toyota Prius after ... read more

Well... I woke up just a wee bit hungover, but nothing I can't handle. Proceeded to clean up in my swanky Waldorf-Astoria bathroom, complete with marble, glass shampoo bottle, full bar of soap, plush robe, etc. One goofy thing... The shower head is on the opposite wall of the tub/shower as the tub spigot is... So you pull the nob to switch the water over to the shower and you have to wait and listen while it works it's way over, around n' up the other side of the tub. And... As one might imagine, any temperature adjustments have to work their way around there too... This delayed reaction, combined with moderate hangover, resulted in a rather frustrating shower experience. I did survive the shower though and called up the Bell Captain to put my luggage ... read more

This was my last day at home for several months. My parents stayed the weekend to help me pack n' such and the help was greatly appreciated. This morning on the way to the airport we stopped at Sunrise and had some pancakes. We made it to Lambert Field with plenty of time to spare and the flight to Laguardia went off without a hitch. Arriving at Laguardia I grabbed my bags and proceeded to call the SuperShuttle. This shuttle ended up not being so super. I waited over half an hour for it to show up and then the ride took over an hour as we dropped off numerous people in so many different areas I lost count. Finally I arrived at the Waldorf-Astoria. Now... Until this night I thought I knew what a fancy ... read more
