very cool blog I really enjoyed being taken on this trip Karen... well written blog and great nostalgic info plus! Thanks. For one who seems to have an aversion to travelling in the States, I actually thought otherwise......
City Lights I went there when I was in San Francisco a few years ago but didn't know about their 'revolutionary' history, so this was fascinating to me. I've been a booklover for ever, reading banned books too. I also really love that poem and hadn't come across Lawrence Ferlinghetti before, so thanks!
...but it should be. I'm kind of surprised it isn't a tourist spot, heck, they even have T-shirts! But I guess it helps if you revere books and have a sense of history.
Sorry we missed you We lived in SF the past 3 years but are in the Baltimore area now. If you get this way please let us know. We'd love to meet you. Enjoy SF....one of our favorite cities.
Me, too. I wish I could have met you as well. When my parents were still alive I'd visit Annapolis every year, but haven't been back since 2010. You have a new city to explore!
And the worst part... I think the worst part about eating durian is that your burps taste like durian for the next four hours. I am forced to drink beer and eat chocolate just to get the taste out of my mouth. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.)
FLINT Sad to hear of the economic demise of cities and towns in USA. I guess it is from the World economic crisis of 2009. Its hard to fathom that buildings become abandoned and decayed with no end in sight. However your blog gives some hope. A place with such a great name as Flint deserves to have more than a spark of hope for better times.
Before 2009 The economy meltdown in 2009 hurt Flint more than many cities. However, its decline started in the 1980s when General Motors' market share fell from 43% to the dismal 17% it is today. There are people who realize that the days of the booming auto industry aren't coming back, and they will be the people who rebuild the city. (I hope.)
Transported to a new world by your blog and photos Hi Karen,
Love the History and photos, this looks like the most fun place so far.
The sense of humor in the artwork is infectious, so I hope that means people are happy.
What a great way to save and enhance old buildings and not have to pay for it.
Great to have titles on the buildings in English, but what is the primary language?
Safe travels and looking forward to the next installment.
Nikki
Language The official language is Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian language,) but there is a considerable push for people to learn English. This is part of the Prime Minister's goal to be a developed nation by 2020, and the British held sway over the Federated Malay States until 1957, so there is a legacy of speaking English, at least in commerce.
I'm an independent single woman who loves to travel. Favorite place to visit in a new country? The grocery store.
