Ringing the bell

nice!
It sounds wonderful, love reading about all of your adventures. It's too bad we don't have more laws in the US to make our country "work"!

The most interesting regulation
There is a statute on the books - Section 354 of the Penal Code - which makes "Outrage of Modesty" a crime. This can apply in a number of cases, such as being groped in the subway or on a public bus. It is considered a gender-neutral crime under the law, but it is most often men who are convicted. And yes, it comes with jail time!

Cheap Novels & Azure Waters
The grand plan does not always goes accordingly. I love the man plan, god laughs quote. Priceless! Your photography just keeps getting better and better. Great story about the good wife cake. Love it.

Thank you!
Thank you for your kind words. And, for what it's worth, while the rain has stopped, the strong winds and heavy surf has not. Watched a couple of guys with six-pack abs try to get in the water yesterday. All of them got tumbled off their feet by the first breaker, and one guy lost his shorts! I have, however, visited some very cool temples.

Good wife cakes
I have always wondered about the name, but never looked it up. And they don't last very long in my hands either :)

After all that planning on the forum...
I apologize for having recommended a beach where you would have rain. Hopefully, the sun will come out tomorrow. You seem to adapt well to your circumstances, and there is always that book you can read.

Man plans, God laughs...
Yes, I brought several books. When packing I had room for more books or more underwear. On the premise that I can wash underwear, I chose more books.

Books
Books! I still recommend "Sand in the Wind" to friends... every chance I get. Glad to see that you are enjoying life... and living it well. Peace.

Sand in the Wind
Yes, I think it's one of the best books about Viet Nam I've ever read.

Hidden gems
To think a tower could contain such gems of fantastic art depicting a pivotal moment in modern history...the Great Depression. Wonderful pics that set the page alight. Great blog Karen.

Thanks!
Thank you for your kind words. The murals were pretty amazing. Up close, they were full of visual puns and social commentary. For example, in the lunch counter panel, the waitress wears a blue Star of David. In the facing panel a rather dark menacing figure carries a box with the SS insignia on it. Even in 1935 these artists foresaw the menace to come in WWII.

Workers' art
What a fab spot! I love Coit tower, its views. murals and the documentary on its wild parrots. The parrots, like those in South and Central America, probably come out around sunset which is why we've not seen them. Our post office in Santa Barbara also has WPA murals--so great to see working people depicted in art. There was a similar project in the 80s, under Reagan of all people. The CETA program hired artists for painting murals and teaching the young, as well as hiring workers for community organizing. Ah, to have that again!

Learning something new
I was familiar with the CETA program, but I didn't know it employed artists as well. Gives me a reason to travel to around looking at art - not that that is a hardship!

Love this place!
Karen, this is one of my favorite places in SF. Many years ago we helped my then 75-year-old mother climb up to the tower. We' ve had picnics around the grounds and think one of my husband's relatives painted some of the murals.

Way cool!
That is so cool that you have a personal connection to one of the artists. I think that gives you a perfect excuse to go to SF for another visit.

Very strong evocative art
Reminds me of some of the Australian Trade Union art in trades halls around the country.

Thanks!
Well, I guess that means I need to visit Australia.

Good stuff
For me, this was a much better way to spend my time than looking at overpriced T-shirts on Fisherman's Wharf.
