Our time in Melbourne was short but sweet, with only two days to spend on it's beautiful streets. We spent our time walking throughout the downtown area, seeing the sights and eating as much of the delicious food our stomachs could hold. With so many little streets filled with shops, restaurants, musicians, artists and other interesting sights, there was never a time that we had nothing to do. The city seemed to be a piece of art with so many old buildings, trams running through the streets and tall buildings scattered throughout. Our hostel was actually built in 1812 and had previously been used as a homeless center before being turned into Nomads Backpackers. After our two days in Melbourne, we bid farewell to Australia and headed for the Philippines. First, we had a 7 1/2 ... read more

The time has come to move on. Our last working day was the 9th of December. Goodbyes were said to our co-workers, some of whom we will miss, others not so much. The following day we rose at dawn and trudged off to the bus station, ready to start our small excursion to Airlie Beach. The trip itself was refreshingly short compared to the 18-hour rides we had been on previously. We hopped off right on the beach, had to walk just 100 meters to our hostel (Beaches Backpackers) and checked in comfortably. Though shared with 8 other people, mostly German, the dorm we were assigned to was quite nice. There was even a balcony. We only paid $17 each/night for it. The building we were in was attached to a larger, outdoor area that contained ... read more

Hello again, It's been quite a while since last I wrote in this blog (me, being Jordan). I'm very happy to report that we finally have something worthwhile to post here in our travel blog. Just yesterday Krista and I returned here to Mackay after a 5-day trip down to Brisbane, which will be our last adventure here in Australia until we leave for the Philippines from Melbourne on December 18th. The two main highlights of the this little journey were the Australia Zoo, the most infamous of zoos in perhaps the entire world. Founded by Steve Irwin's parents, and made famous by Steve Irwin and his show The Crocodile Hunter, the zoo was at least 100 acres in girth, and was filled by an equally impressive number of animals. I'd never been to a zoo ... read more

Hi again, everybody! I'd first like to express my deepest sympathy for those of you who have been experiencing the cold wrath of snow already, and I'd also like to apologize for the lack of blog entries we've had as of late. There really is not much to report here. We've been working, sometimes, swimming many times and eating all the time. Fortunately for us, October has brought us heat in the low 30's rather than snow, and we've been spending as much time sunbathing as possible. Which is why I will make this short - I want to get out by the pool and spend some quality time with my book. Everyone seems to be wondering what we did to celebrate Thanksgiving (Thanks for making me very hungry with all the talk of turkey and ... read more

Well, there isn't much new to report since our last entry, seeing as life in Mackay has just become a routine for us. During the day we walk around the town for a few hours, do some grocery shopping, cooking, and relaxing. and work keeps us busy during the evening hours. Slowly, the days are getting hotter and hotter here, and frighteningly enough, it's only the beginning of their spring. The bats here are as big as foxes (which is why they call them "flying foxes") and that's been a constant scare for me during evening hours. Around 5 o'clock every evening, the rainbow lorakeets come out (beautiful colourful birds that we mistakened for loud parrots at first) and I've been meaning to get some pictures of them. Anyways, I have a couple of photos to ... read more

We apologize for not having updated our blog, but the causes of that have been lack of available wi-fi and a lack of excitement. We have been settling into Mackay and have found jobs at a local restaurant by the name of Ribs & Rumps. It is a part of the new Caneland Mall, and as such is quite an expensive place. Incredibly busy as well, it keeps us on our toes while we scurry back and forth. I've even gotten to bartend a couple of nights, which is something I hope to do more of. It's good experience to have. Other than that, we've been playing a lot of Mario Kart on our hosts' Wii and have wandered around town scouting out the city. It's a decent, little place with a population of about 80,000, ... read more

After an incredibly long, 18 hour bus trip, we are finally settled in Mackay. We arrived shortly after 7 this morning, picked up by our Filipino friends Lilibeth & Jerry, who definitely did not have to wake up early especially for us. They showed us our room, and we had a quick, four hour nap. I didn't even feel my head hit the pillow, I was so exhausted. After we woke up, they drove us through town to the mall, where we found a few job openings that we are hopeful for. A short drive to the marina had us meet up with Jerry's boss, with whom we had a good chat with. Besides a couple hours of Karaoke with Jerry, there's nothing much else to report. But, I've finally a chance to upload photos, so ... read more

So, we haven't had the opportunity to post for a few days, so we've a bit of catching up to do. First off, our final two days in Byron Bay were quite fulfilling. On the first night a fellow approached us and sold us on a surf lesson for the following day. It's Australia, we couldn't really pass up a chance to learn how to surf. Only $35 for a 4-hour lesson, which is about $25 cheaper than anywhere else we could find, so it was well worth the money. The instructor took us and two other couples, from Britain and from Germany (very nice people), to a little-known surf spot. We spent the morning being pushed into the paths of waves, and believe it or not, we were not too bad at it. Kris was ... read more

So, I'm having an extremely difficult time uploading multiple photos, because of the painfully slow wifi connection here at the hostel. However, I have managed to upload a few photos of our trip so far, though I had to do it one at a time. Hopefully the next place we're at has better wifi. Anyways, Jord and I were out and about Byron Bay yesterday on the bikes that our hostel provided (though they were not the best bikes we could have had) and we were meaning to get to the beach but it's been so chilly here that we decided to pass on that until today. We did pick up some groceries though, and had a great, hostel-cooked meal last night. Mmm, spaghetti. No luck at all so far with jobs! Apparently it's very difficult ... read more

Bondi Beach, Sydney
Bondi Beach, again.

We beat the forces of jet lag, which tried to pin us down with a total of 23 hours of in-flight time. No after-effects, whatsoever. Jord is quite proud of that fact, as it's his first flight of any extended length. We made it through the airport, grabbed a SIM card for my phone along the way and took the airport train to Central Station. Our hostel was just down the road, luckily enough, so we unpacked early and headed out to beautiful Bondi Beach. We walked for hours along the cliffs and rocks, hopped into the crystalline waves, laid down on sand that was a brilliant white and finished by circling into town and ending up at the beachfront once again. Walking makes us hungry, (naturally) so we stopped at a quaint, little Italian restaurant ... read more
