Arrival into Paris a success after a delay in flight from Bordeaux, and then a taxi strike, not permitting buses to the Airport terminals also. So onto the train I hop. Hopping off on the underground station of Luxembourg, and onto Rue Gay Lussac where my hotel is. Checked in, unpacked and went out for a walk. The Luxembourg gardens were very open, and relatively bare for the area they lay upon, but still very nice with statues and fountains everywhere. The Jardin Du Luxembourg was quite long as well. Over yonder was the Palais Du Luxembourg Senat - this place had quite a few military and security around it. I walked around the building until I got to the other side where there was the Luxembourg Museum, where they were showing paintings by Manet, Monet, ... read more

A quiet Sunday, and thought I would just lay in, and take my time to do whatever I wanted. I decided to find a Pub, and a british pub where I could watch Liverpool v Manchester United. I found the Sherlock Holmes pub, lol...but a pint of beer, nice comfy atmposphere and the game on sky tv, I was set for the afternoon. sounds silly, but needed a quiet Sunday before heading to Paris. Liverpool lost 3-0 played terrible, but watching Rooney was good to see ;) then back to pack my bag and sort things out before tomorrow.. Looking forward to it for sure ;)... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Arcachon December 13th 2014

Saturday and I decided i would go to the town of Arcachon, just a one hour train trip south of Bordeaux. This is a fishing town where some of the worlds best oysters are cultivated. Of course, on the lunch menu was oysters along with a nice glass of sav blanc. But before lunch, I did a walk up to the Parc Mauresque where you could see over the main part of the town and over to the bay. It was quite a steep walk up, and the view over the water was really nice viewing. I walked from there along the main shopping streets, and to a market where I found a nice little restaurant to have my lunch. After lunch, it was a walk to the water, although it did start raining, and forced ... read more

The sunrise was beautiful from the Nice airport, and a great start to the day. A flight via Paris and onto Bordeaux. I had a little rest before heading out and exploring the streets. My hotel was only 2 bus stops from the main city square, and only a five minute walk. How great this was. I walked and took in the amazing buildings and culture. It was really different to what I experienced in Nice. The streets wider, and more modern in comparison. I found a Christmas market which I wandered through, of course getting some macaroons to eat. They were so nice. Then making my way around the streets further I headed into an older area with smaller streets. I came across a British Pub but this did not take my fancy, but across ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Èze December 11th 2014

Today I had a lay in, but did have on the agenda to go to a little village called Éze. It was about 9 km from Nice and 5 km before you go to Monaco, which I caught a tram, and then a bus to get to the little village. It took about half an hour, as the bus drove up through the mountains to get to the Village which is more then 450 metres above sea level. As soon as I arrived of course a nice cup of coffee and to the office of tourism to get a little map. Onward and up hill into the village where there were private residences, and lots of little shops. The roads (well walkways) were no more than 2 metres wide, and some of the shop doors were ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice December 10th 2014

Very early start to my day today to catch a flight from Geneva, but worth the getting up early to arrive and get settled in by lunchtime at my hotel. I decided to take a walk to the main promenade, but in doing so just had to have a crepe of course, French style. From having my lunchtime snack, I walked along the promenade, but then onto the pebbled beach. The waves were rolling in, the sound was beautiful. There is no building sand castles here, but can build pebble castles. There were men fishing, fish jumping out of the water, and boats nearby trying to catch the fish also. I then decided to catch a little road train, around Nice and old town Nice and up to le Chateau. As we went up the hillside ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix-Mont-Blanc December 9th 2014

Chamonix - I had heard so much about it and just had to see for myself what people were saying. After an early morning start and catching the train to St Gervais and then onto Chamonix, it was close to 2 hours, but 2 hours very much worth it. Oh my goodness, just hopping of the train, the scenery was breathtaking, and of course it being the start of winter you can only imagine the cold in the air. The snow as we were travelling the train was getting thicker as we went up. Once arriving, I had to mark my one giant leap for Jacqui. I captured my foot step on the snow lol. I then wandered down the main street, although normally you are looking ahead and to the sides as you are walking. ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Annemasse December 8th 2014

Arrived quite late to my room last night after 2 flights, a train ride and a bus ride. But thoroughly enjoyed the various modes of transport. There was a nice girl on the train that assisted me with my luggage and then a couple who directed me to my bus to my final destination-my hotel. The highlight of my flight in, is that there was a full moon, the clouds were beneath in patches and the North Star was shining very bright. As we were decending to Geneva the clouds looked bright, you could see the town lights beneath them, and the alps poking above. It was wonderful seeing them. Although I must say that Germany is such a pretty place from the sky as well. It took my breath away. After walking the main streets ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne December 5th 2014

Relax day today, with just a small wander around the main shopping precinct, and of course, one of the Christmas markets. There is nine in all in the city of Cologne to see if you are willing to travel out of the main city. Enjoyed an apple strudel from the bakery, and of course another gluehwien. Where is met this lovely lady who started talking to me. When she found I couldn't speak german, she started speaking in English. Very fluent as well. She was telling me it was nice to practice, as she only learn't to speak english 10 years ago. She is now 75, dressed in her red and white and was going to the local soccer match with the LC Koln team. Her son met her and they went to the game together ... read more

Day two, and decided to do the touristy thing and see the sights. I walked my way across the to the Rhein river. The view was wonderful, with so many different buildings and eating places set along the riverside. From here I walked up toward the Dom and across the'Hohenzollermbrucke' bridge. This bridge is the bridge of love, where many couples go and place a padlock on the fence of the bridge to confirm their love is locked forever. I was amazed at how many padlocks there were there. The whole 1km of one side of the bridge was covered, with the otherside starting to get many on it also. Once across the bridge I walked to the Lanxess Arena, where they hold all their concerts, and stage shows. The place is as big as a ... read more
