I am a Kiwi based in Perth, working as a travel agent. I've been a travel agent for 4 years or so now, in Wellington, NZ, London and now in Perth. I always try and go to places off the beaten track and explore. My life goal is to visit every single country in the world, and I am slowly crossing them off my list, and scratching them off my scratch map that my friend brought for me one Christmas. I always keep a journal and have decided to turn it into a blog, as before I went on a lot of adventures I would have loved some advice before I started planning! I hope that these blogs can help other people plan their holidays/adventures =) I by no means profess myself as an author, but I enjoy writing and I hope you'll enjoy reading!

Arriving at Windhoek was easily one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. It wasn't the bugs the size of small aircrafts flying around, nor the impending terror that was African animals, but the bitch at the customs desk. Apparently I had been asleep when they gave us the required forms for entering the country. This woman showed me no mercy. She made me go to the back of the line, after two plane loads had already landed and lined up, to fill out the form. After lining up again and going to a different lady, I was told my passport had already been entered into the system. They made me go back to the original woman who sassed me again to the point of tears. She stared at me blankly, before nudging her colleague ... read more

Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Brasov » Brasov June 4th 2014

Romania. Land of the old Romany gypsy woman, and home to count Dracula. Not a holiday or travel destination. At least this is what a close minded nitwit would say. If you’ve read any of my other blogs you’ll know that I’m a sucker for cheap deals. If Ryanair fly there, you can almost guarantee that I’ve been. The best way to see the world is to go to the most obscure places, get out of your comfort zone and discover the unexpected and downright bizarre. Romania, Transylvania to be precise. Land of mountainous ranges, caves and rivers. Also home to a number of ridiculously funky bars. Which is where we spent most of our time. My friend Chloe and I flew into Bucharest, on the airline I hate to love. When we arrived, I did ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Caribbean February 7th 2014

On a last minute deal, Ron and I booked an inside cabin on the Jewel of the Seas, a ship that does a Caribbean cruise starting and ending in Puerto Rico. It was about 250 pounds each for the week including accommodation and food; I couldn’t say no to that. Even if it was a cruise. And cruises are for old people. Or so I thought... All the best adventures begin when Plan A doesn’t quite go as expected. While the initial plan was simply to get to our cruise departure point, the alternative was much more exciting. Turns out even a cruise can turn into an adventure. Halfway across the Atlantic, our pilot gave a long winded explanation as to why we were no longer landing at JFK airport, but diverting to Detroit. Snow. In ... read more

Europe » Denmark » Region Hovedstaden » Copenhagen September 23rd 2013

There’s only one thing slightly more invigorating than travelling itself. And that’s influencing others to travel, and then see them enjoy it just as much as you do. When my friend Chloe and I decided to go on quick weekend break to Copenhagen, I must admit I was a bit dubious. I’m all about exploring new places and roughing it a bit. Chloe is more a 4-5 star kind of girl, staying on the beaten track. I wish I could have captured the look on her face when I said that I’d booked us into a youth hostel. But I’ve learnt to not judge books by their covers, and as it turns out Chloe was a bit of a dark horse. Our weekend began in the wee hours of the morning, as the best adventures always ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Podgorica August 8th 2013

After many border crossings we finally made it to Plav, Montenegro. It was such a struggle to find our hotel as it was tucked down back streets that slanted dangerously and had more pot holes than actual road. It turns out it was signposted but only in the local language, which is Montegrin, nevertheless we eventually found it after getting lost several times. I have never seen the point in spending a lot of time or money on hotels, but I could have spent forever and my riches at Hotel Kula Damjanova. It was more of a lodge than a hotel. It was on two floors with a spiral type staircase, and was made entirely from wood. It was perched on the lakes edge, and was decorated by oriental rugs hanging on the walls. It was ... read more

Europe » Kosovo » Centre » Prishtina August 8th 2013

We drove through Serbia and on to Kosovo from Bulgaria, through massive, hulking mountains, surrounding the clearest of lakes. We ducked in and out of cave like tunnels, holding our breath as we went through each one, like I used to do as a child. It was disarming; the beauty actually took me a back a bit because I wasn’t expecting it. It was times like this that I truly understood why I avoid the tourist places and try and find my own, hidden bits of paradise. My male asked me if I was wondering how many other people had seen this. I was thinking about that too, and I could count on one hand how many people I knew that had ever travelled to this part of the world. I felt a surge of excitement, ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia City » Sofia August 8th 2013

When I planned our couples trip, my male asked me to organise it with the sky as the limit. I figured if we were going to fly into Macedonia we may as well visit the surrounding countries as well. Luckily I found the perfect man that likes exploring as much as I do. We crossed the border into Bulgaria in the late evening after our day spent caving in Macedonia. Our first experience in Bulgaria, at a restaurant, was an interesting one because no-one there spoke any English so we almost had to guess what we were having for dinner. We had free entertainment as the group next to us was quite drunk and were trying fruitlessly to stop the rain getting on them. They had constructed a rickety shelter out of pool umbrellas over their ... read more

Europe » Macedonia » Skopje August 8th 2013

Being a travel agent in London, I get so sick of sending my clients to Tenerife or Malaga. So when I organise my own trips I am immediately drawn to the lesser known, more adventurous places. So for a couples weekend, rather than go to Paris or Rome I decided that we’d go to the Balkans – starting and ending in Macedonia. Macedonia is one of these places that is misconceived as being a terrible holiday choice. For that reason I obviously wanted to go, as I knew I would be able to avoid the average British tourist. We flew into Skopje, the capital of what is technically called the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. I know this because every time I called the country simply ‘Macedonia’ my Greek friend would kick me and then correct ... read more

Europe » Spain » Galicia » Santiago de Compostela August 8th 2013

On my flight to Reus (Barcelona) with my least favourite airline Ryannair, I was thinking to myself that the weekend ahead could go one of two ways. It was to be my first music festival in Europe, and well, anywhere at all, ever. The first way was that it would be the best weekend of my life, one that I would never forget and use constantly as a comparison for my future festivals. The second way was that it would be utter shit, and I would be grumpy and tired and hate the world. It was unlikely to hang in the middle. It was going to swing to one of the extremes. Luckily it swung the right way, with only one slight hiccup at the beginning. I arrived at Reus, ready to pick up the hire ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Tel Aviv District » Tel Aviv June 16th 2013

When my GBF (Gay Best Friend) Emanuel said flippantly that we should go to his homeland of Israel, I don’t think he quite thought that I was being serious when I excitedly said yes. Nevertheless, he had made the offer, albeit an offhand one and I had accepted. I would never turn down a guided tour of a country that I had previously put on the ‘too dangerous’ list. We booked the flights before he could back out. For an added bonus after we booked the flights we realised that the Gay Pride week was on for the last weekend that we were there. I’m going to mix it up a bit and start this story from the end. My last weekend in Israel was fabulous. Actually no it was Fabulous. It deserves a capital letter. ... read more
