Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Munich May 17th 2010

If you haven't visited Munich, then you probably have no idea why I would title this blog "beer". Beer is what makes Munich go around. Most of their history is based on the production or consumption of beer. Historically, monks have been the ones to make the beer, however currently there is only 1 brewhouse that is still brewed by monks. We arrived Friday night after an awesome time in Interlaken. We met a great group of people in Interlaken and had so much fun with them. 2 Aussies and 2 Canadians. Most of our time together was spent dancing to this fantastic French song called Alors on danse. The first time you hear it you may want to poke your eye out, but by the 7th or 8th time, you'll love it as much as ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken May 12th 2010

We arrived in Interlaken on Monday evening and spent yesterday hiking in the Alps. What an experience! The views are unbelievable! We wanted to take a train ride up Jungfraubahn which is the "Top of Europe", but it was cloudy at the top and we didn't want to waste a beautiful day on the 2.5 hour train ride up only to see clouds. Jungfraubahn is over 11,000 feet high. We hiked up to about 2600 feet and then took a gondola ride to 4800 feet and hiked a little more. I feel like this is somewhere I could live! Interlaken is known for it's outdoor adventures. Everything from hiking to bungee jumping is offered. Today we are going canyoning. From what I understand, canyoning is kind of a lot of things all wrapped up in one. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 8th 2010

SPQR is all over Rome. After seeing it for a few days we decided to look it up. I thought it meant Long Live Rome. Nate thought it was a utility company. I was definitely closer. It means the Senate and People of Rome. We have seen it on statues, utility covers, fountains, everywhere! So, Rome is awesome! The people are friendly, the food is great, the wine is cheap! I think I may be in love. On our first day here we took a walking tour of the Colosseum area and then went inside the Coloseum on a self guided tour. It was unbelievable! It's amazing that they were able to build such an amazing structure in only 10 years and it is still standing today. The whole time I was walking around I couldn't ... read more

Europe » France » Paris May 4th 2010

I have titled this blog as the phrase I have used most while in Paris. Unfortunately, my almost 7 years of French class has been almost completely forgotten. I haev been able to have a few basic conversations en francais, but for the most part I will say hello and then ask if they speak english, which by the way, most of them do. And if you make a small effort to speak some french, they are even more willing to help you. So, my overall impressions of Paris: 1. Most people here DO speak English, they just don't like to advertise it. 2. The city is very dirty. I didn't expect all the urine smells, trash on the street and cigarette butts everywhere you go. 3. Paris IS for lovers. I have seen so many ... read more

Europe » France » Paris April 30th 2010

We arrived in Paris late Wednesday night after a 9 hour bus ride from London. Our first experience was getting on the metro (train) and it stopping after a few minutes because there was a "suspicious package" at the next stop that they needed to confirm was not a bomb! Luckily it wasn't and service resumed about 30 minutes later. Thursday I hiked to the Basilica, and when I say hike, I mean it! I didn't realize how many stairs I was going to have to go up but it was worth it. The view is amazing and the Basilica is beautiful as well. From there, I decided to visit the Montmartre, home of the Moulin Rouge. It was very cool to see and I got some pictures. After lunch, Nate and I met back up ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » Winchester April 27th 2010

After 4 nights in London, we decided it was time to get out of the city and see some of the countryside. The man at the pub who told me the shroud of Jesus was a fake, suggested that we go to Winchester. We had originally been talking about Stonehenge but he said it was a waste of time-- "just a bunch of rocks sitting around in a field". He told us that Winchester was a small town with a lot of history and he was right!! We arrived yesterday morning and had already reserved a room above a local pub. We went to drop off our backpacks and met the owner of the pub, gary. The pub/inn is called the King Alfred Pub after the cities most prominent leader, King Alfred. Even Gary's dog was ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London April 24th 2010

So I am titling this blog, what is one of our many remaining questions about the city. We have noticed that most doors have the doorknob directly in the center of the door. We have yet to figure out why, but we have many hypotheses about it. Perhaps they think it is more aesthetically pleasing? Maybe it puts less stress on the door itself. Who knows? Thursday night was spent out drinking pints at a pub close to our hostel. I instantly made friends with 3 good looking British guys. We ended up spending a few hours talking to them about the cultural differences and politics. They were nice enough to draw us a homemade map of all the sights they thought we should try and see. If I could scan it, I would because it ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London April 22nd 2010

We made it to Europe! So happy to be able to say that considering all the issues with the volcano ash. The flights were on time but I got pretty much no sleep. We landed at 7:30am and took a train to out hostel to drop off our extremely heavy backpacks. By 9am we had set out to see London. We ended up walking by the Buckingham Palace just in time to see the changing og the guards. Our view wasn't very good but we saw them march in along with the band. Nate almost got pickpocketed by a 7 year old. We saw him a few minutes after he patted down Nate's pocket and Nate reported him to a local officer. The officer questioned the kid but a few minutes later we noticed he was ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Jacksonville April 20th 2010

Well, it looks like our trip to Europe is a go! The flight restrictions were lifted at 5pm EST and I just finished packing. My backpack is incredibly full and I already know I'll be shipping back souvenirs. I was debating whether or not to bring my cowboy boots which take up a lot of space, but I couldn't imagine 1 month without at least 1 cute pair of shoes, so they're packed!! Next blog will be from London (I hope). Wish me luck!... read more
