Learning to walk around the streets in the Old District of Hanoi is like learning to dance…the only catch is if you make a wrong step, or lose the tune…you’re dead on the road. When I first arrived I would stand on the sidewalk, looking across the road to where I wanted to go, for a good 10 minutes before getting up the guts to take that first step into the traffic. By the time I left, it was like instinct. I just put myself out there, the first step is always the hardest, and danced. It’s amazing how easy it is once you get the hang of it. Hanoi was good, if a little overwhelming. I discovered Bia Hoi on my second to last night there, and it caused me one of the worst hangovers ... read more

I just wanted to say thank you for all your comments and thanks for reading. But I guess sometimes it's hard to communicate through blogs...I just wanted everyone to know that Neal was completely kidding when he made the comment about pretending to be a backpacker. It was over beers and we were both giving each other crap about one thing or another. He's a great guy...and it was really nothing. It just got me thinking about how I'm a hypocrite sometimes...and that maybe I'm got as cut out for the rough stuff as I thought I was. There was a time I was going to join the Peace Corp, and now I know I could never spend 2 years in a 3rd world or developing nation. It's just not me. I love it for awhile, ... read more

My month in Laos has come to an end; I head to Vietnam in the morning. I am real excited about Vietnam. Since I have been out here I have heard mixed reviews about the country, but after the extremely mellow atmosphere of Laos, I think I’m ready for something a little more fast pace. I am alone again, and that is a good thing as well. I had a great time with Neal and Claire, but we had our last night a few nights ago in the south, and I feel more adventurous now that I am on my own again. Back on my journey. So Southern Laos…hot. Real hot. Suck the life of me hot. Beautiful, but hot. Somebody said one day that it was 41 degrees (around 106 F), with about 30-40% humidity. ... read more

That hot shower that I raved about before…I had the equivalent in a meal last night. A huge, juicy filet of beef with a 3-pepper sauce with potatoes and hot bread. A nice bottle of imported red wine…I was in absolute ecstasy. It was the first time the people I am traveling with have seen me finish a meal…and I actually finished first. I swear I could’ve ordered a second steak and ate that one just as fast. The whole meal cost me $9USD. I swear I cannot spend more than $20 a day in Laos…it even makes Thailand seem expensive. The restaurant was called Le Cote D’Azur and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Vientiane. There are many French restaurants here and you can see the influence of the French in the streets, ... read more

3 farang walk into a Starbucks, an American, a Brit, and a German… Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s actually a scene I witnessed this morning that made me realize that it is time to leave Thailand. I am not really sure of the nationality of these men, but I was sitting on a bus heading to the Golden Triangle when I witnessed three Western men walk into Starbucks pulling roller laptop bags. They ordered their coffee, sat down, opened their laptops and started working (the traffic light was that long!). It seriously gave me chills. I could almost see co-workers faces through the window…this could have been any of the hundreds of Starbucks in Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, LA, Phoenix...all those place where I used to do the same thing. I don’t ... read more

Have you ever had a hot shower that’s better than…well, you know? My shower water was so hot last night that it almost burned my scalp…but I stayed under it for as long as I possibly could! It was that good, and it took almost that long to get the dirt outta my hair, ears, off my black feet…ahh! I have spent most of the last 5 days in the jungle and now I’m back to civilization. Chiang Mai is probably the 2nd biggest city in Thailand. It is the capital of the North, and is much more mellow than Bangkok. The weather is always cooler than the south, and the people here are very proud of their city. When I first got here I was a little disappointed…it just seemed like another busy city…but Chiang ... read more

I am writing this from the top bunk of a 2nd class cabin of a train on it's way to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. I should probably be asleep like the Korean Christian Missionaries in the bunks around me, but I slept until noon today, so I am just not tired. My Tylenol PM are in my luggage beneath the bottom bunk, and I'm afraid if I try to get them I will wake Jin-Hu and that would mean the risk of an attempt to convert, which is a risk I am not willing to take right now. It's funny how things happen when least expected. When I got back from Peru and went to work for MetiLinx, I really thought my dream of leaving everything behind and traveling for a extended period of time ... read more

I am hung over again, but just to set the record straight, I am not becoming an alcoholic …I have only been out drinking 2 nights during the whole trip…in fact, last night was the first night I consumed alcohol in the past week. It’s just that when I do go out drinking, it makes me lazy the next day…which leads me into the internet cafÈ to update my blog. I had reason to celebrate last night…I am now Open Water SCUBA certified! It’s something I have wanted to do for a long time and now I have done it! What an amazing experience. Yesterday I was on the bottom of the ocean in the Gulf of Thailand doing backflips...mindblowing! I was in a very small group; there were only 3 of us, with this crazy ... read more

I have been in Bangkok for 4 days and I feel like it! My head is pounding because I had a few too many Sanghas and White Russians with some Swiss people I met at the Volk Bar (a small bar made out of a converted Volkswagon Bus) last night. I woke up this morning in my little box of a room, which was about 120 degrees, and really wanted to die. Even my daily freezing cold shower and American breakfast couldn't make me feel better. But oh well...it was a good night! The trip has been good so far. It took me quite a while to get out here though. I flew 11 hours from Honolulu to Taipei, Taiwan where I missed my connecting flight to Bangkok. No big deal though...it's funny how less stressed ... read more

Just checking e-mail and getting last minute things in order. In 12 hours I will be on a flight to Bangkok. I have had a great little stopover here in Hawaii. I spent most of the week in Kihei, Maui hanging out with Barry and Rach and family. We got them all moved into their new condo, and pretty much did a whole lot of nothing all week. It was great. The night before last I went and had my last steak dinner at Ruth's Chris and ate so much I couldn't move! I figured it would be my last time to eat a real meal...but I didn't count on Mihwa's cooking! I flew into Honolulu last night and Mihwa and her girlfriend picked me up from the airport and we came out to Kaneohe where ... read more
