June 12 - Estella to Los Arcos We got up early today determined to beat the afternoon sun. As per my guide book 86% of today's walk is on delightful natural paths (translation mostly small thumbnail sized rocks on a hardened clay type surface - very hard of course on the feet). A 150 m elevation today through oak and pine trees and 200 m descent back into vineyards and open farm fields into Los Arcos again with no shade from the pounding sun - I now see why this time of year has the least pilgrims on the path. About 3 km out from Estella there is a free water or wine font - Fuentes de vino - I emptied my small water bottle and filled up with the wine - when in Rome.. When ... read more

June 11 - Cirauqui to Estella We left Cirauqui at 7am after eating nectarines, walnuts and figs Tanya had bought the night before - my feet are very blistered and it was becoming more and more painful to walk so we decided to only walk to Estella - about 14km. This was another beautiful walk through rolling farmland and vineyards - however the drawback was little shade again - few trees or shelter. Very hot again today. There were many steep climbs and descents on some eroded paths - we now realize there will be few flat stages. This heat takes a real toll. We ran into Anna from Austria and Paul (asked to be called Pablo on the walk as this was his true birth name) from Texas. Pablo had fallen backwards onto his back ... read more

June 10 - Uterga to Cirauqui As we leave Uterga we make our first detour from the suggested route to see the Eunate church. I love my guide book that suggests the "short" detour is only 2.8 km. The church is linked to the Knights Templar who long defended the pilgrims on route to Santiago. It has eight sides, an unadorned interior and a freestanding outer porch made of small inlaid stones with delicate twin towers that surrounds the church - it is also said to be a burial site for pilgrims that succumbed to the hardships along the route. The clincher for me to go was that fellow pilgrims said if you walk 3 times around the porch barefoot you may experience some healing energy - I really do not believe in this type of ... read more

June 9th -Pamplona to Ulterga The walk out of Pamplona on the crowded streets was long, noisy, busy but relatively flat. From Cizur Menor we climbed from 450m to 790m and then back down to Ulterga at 500m - this climbing is taking a toll on almost all our fellow pilgrims' feet and joints - Tanya and I are no exception - we are also in extreme heat / sun with little shade - we are melting all day long. At lease three of our starting group have opted for taxis / buses to skip a few stages to give their feet / joints a rest. The views: fauna, insects and birds are again stunning and never cease to amaze. There are huge amounts of bees collecting nectar from the almond blossoms and other flowering trees ... read more

June 8 - Zubiri to Pamplona We learned a bit more about the daily lives of Spanish families in this region. It appears customary to shut everything down in the heat of the day (I imagine siestas are still the norm) - around 2 pm and open up again at 5. The towns come to life at night - as do the children. We were not kept awake last night by snoring and other bodily utterances, washroom visits or backpack reorgs of our fellow pilgrims - it was children playing outside our window until 12 am - their screams of joy and pain only interrupted by the louder threats from their moms (I'm assuming) to play fair. Tanya and I both love the fact Spanish children play outside a lot - I doubt the vast majority ... read more

June 7 Well - another night - no sleep. Tanya and I were in bunks 171 & 172 - the last two on the first floor and as it turns out the ones right beside the women's showers and toilettes. We were excited to see we were with a middle age Dutch couple - very quiet. We were even more excited to see Angus was on another floor and Damian was at the opposite end of the floor. We fell asleep right away - it was short lived. The sound of flip flops sclerching on the stoned floor started around 11pm - followed by the closing of the door and flushing of the toilettes - with 172 people -1/2 women -it was like a non stop toilette symphony. At about 4:30 am the keeners started to ... read more

I would like to tell you the time I woke up on Friday but the fact of the matter is to wake up you would have had to sleep. We retired from the great dinner to our 6 person bunk room - three women and three men - Tanya was kind enough to take the top bunk. The young Australian kid Angus (about 25) and Damian ( ex military) - from Ireland had a snoring fight to the death - none of the other 4 of us slept - I tried my earplugs from every possible angle except shoving them down their throats - it would not have been very Christian . We were advised we could not take showers in the morning and that we had to report for continental breakfast - a baguette, butter ... read more

We woke up at 7 am and took turns in our private washroom - did I mention to you how great this is... We repacked for the first stage treck - we both dumped a few more items attempting to keep our overall back pack weight under 10 per cent of our body weight - why did I lose that weight - Moore stuFf to throw out. Our gracious gite owner made us a great petit dejeuner - coffee, tea, oj, cereal, yogurt, toast and home made peach and apple confiture - we were the only two left at the gite - she gave us an encouraging send off and there you have it - we took our first step on our Camino. We were buoyed by a German woman leaning out her hotel window exclaiming ... read more

We arrived at our gite in St Jean Pied de Port at 8:30 pm, the 4th of June - a full 24 & 1/2 hours after leaving Ottawa - 32 hours taking into account the time change - both fully exhausted. It turns out Tanya has one of my three curses - curse 1) sleeping in anything that moves is impossible... Plane from Ottawa to Frankfurt - plane from Frankfurt to Madrid - train from Madrid to Pamplona - automobile (taxi) from Pamplona to St Jean Pied de Port - the only missing mode of travel - a slow boat to somewhere - I know what you're thinking Danielle... We almost cried (ok I teared up) when we finally got to our room at a gite Azkorria - first of all two single beds - second ... read more
