After spending a lot of time in cities around China we were really getting ready to see some rural areas of China and experience some lush greenery so Jiuzhaigou sounded perfect for its beautiful national park and the surrounding Tibetan villages. We flew to Chengdu from Shanghai so that we could take the bus there. Unfortunately we couldn't get a flight directly from shanghai to Jiuzhaigou as this would have been far easier. We knew the bus was going to be long but was hoping it was worth it. The bus journey from Chengdu was pretty uneventful we slept quite a bit of the way and then woke for the final 4-5 hours, watching the beautiful scenery unfold in front of us. It was snowing quite heavily as we got around half way and the roads ... read more

We arrived into Shanghai on an overnight hard sleeper from Xi'an. This was our first experience of a sleeper train so we were not sure what to expect. There are 6 bunks in a tiny cabin but they provide a pillow and blanket and the beds are not strictly what you would call hard but they're not the most comfortable thing either. We got on our bunks hoping we would be able to sleep, then realised the Chinese people we were sharing our cabin with liked to ignore the no smoking signs and were soon puffing away and choking us to death. We did our best to get some sleep and after a few hours lying awake listening to the others below snoring, we put in our ear plugs and went to sleep. We woke up ... read more

We came to Xi'an for one purpose really, to see the Terracotta Army, however there are a few other things to do in Xi'an too. We arrived in Xi'an in the early evening after a 6 hour bus ride from Pingyao. The ride was quite good with comfy seats so we had a good sleep most of the way and didn't feel too tired. We booked into our hostel - Han Tang Inn and were greeted by a really friendly Chinese man called Lei . He asked us if it was raining outside to which we replied no, why? He looked at Pete and said "why is your hair all wet then?" I laughed and said, oh, no that's just he's hair gel he thinks it looks good. He looked AT&T Pete as if to say ... read more

We arrived in Pingyao at 00:35 after an 8 hour ride on a hard seat from Datong.if anyone has travelled in China they will know that 8 hours sitting down is a stretch, but 8 hours literally being crammed into your seat, surrounded by Chinese gawping at you, basically sitting on you and constantly waving their bare arsed babies in your face (whilst we waited to get weed on as they generally just hold them in the aisle to do their business) is no easy ride but is definitely an experience. Although after meeting a fellow traveller later in the hostel we found out that it could have been worse - he had a standing only ticket for 9 hours and unknowingly sat in the smoking area for the whole time!!! Anyway the journey was pretty ... read more

We arrived in Datong by train from Beijing which was a 6 hour journey on a hard sleeper. This wasn't as bad as we thought, the seats are actually soft probably similar to that of a normal commuter train in england. A tip on trains is that you need to book them in advance either through your hostel or preferably at the train station. Once you are outside Beijing you cannot book trains easily for your onward journeys and if your planning to only stay somewhere for a few days you may not get a train, so best thing to do is go to beijing station or Beijing West station and pre-book your tickets for your next few jorneys at least - this way your likely to get the soft sleepers etc. Once we arrived in ... read more

Asia » China » The Great Wall November 12th 2012

We got up at 6:30am today very excited about going to the Great Wall. We arranged a tour via the Happy Dragon Hostel in Beijing (not that we were actually staying therseemed we kind of adopted it as our hostel). We had breakfast and although we were due to set off for 7:30 it was well past 8 when we actually got on the bus. We made a few stops at other hostels on the way and eventually made it to Mutianyu at around 10am. We were told that lunch was scheduled for 1:30 after which point we would be getting the bus back so we only had 3 and a half hours to walk the wall and get back. We started off by getting the cable car up to the wall which was good as ... read more

Hi everyone, taken a while to blog and I still need to add my Japan one but just thought I'd update you on some of our adventures in China. Yesterday we had our first real day in China and decided to go to the Forbidden City which in the book sounds amazing - a massive palace from some very old dynasties with lots of different parts to see. However, it was absolutely freezing and pouring hard with rain all day and to make things worse my coat that I thought was waterproof obviously was not (although it was only £5 from primark so what should I have expected). Anyway, the palace was large, yes, but amazing, no it wasn't. Probably the most uninteresting thing I've been to on my travels so far - maybe it was ... read more

We arrived into Nikko from Tokyo on a Shinkansen (bullet train) and immediately noted the change in temperature to the city. We took a short walk up the hill to the other station where the info office and bus ticket office is (a place to get maps and an idea of what to do). We dropped our bags off at the nikko park lodge (number 2) which we first of all couldn't find but it was actually directly opposite the main station entrance. This is directly related to the other Nikko Park Lodge hostel in the mountains where the owner will do a free shuttle pick up and drop off to in morning and evening. They were very accommodating here and gave us maps and directions to the shrine area of Nikko. Instead of paying for ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » New Delhi October 26th 2012

We arrived in Delhi by plane at 4:30am local time and after collecting our bags made what we thought a simple walk outside to the metro station to get a train to New Delhi station in Parharganj where all the budget hotels are located. We found that the metro was closed for reconstruction (typical!!) we therefore got in a cab and asked to go to Parharhganj to a specific hotel. After driving for some time the taxi man pulled over to ask directions to the hotel. After several attempts to get directions he instead took us to a tourist centre where they could help (con number 1). Once there we asked for directions and instead the man called the hotel and then said there was no availability here due to very big festival in India. (con ... read more

Started off early this morning to get to Giza to see the pyramids. Arranged a taxi from our hotel but think we got stung as cost us $50 to get there and back. Once at Giza you realise how strange it is to be standing at the gate to the dessert with thousands of years of history in front of you and a KFC behind you :) decided to make our own way round the Giza area but got hassled every step of the way to buy souvenirs, have our pictures with a camel (for a fee of course) & have a guide (though of course everyone says they are not a guide and are only trying to help you then they ask you for money for providing information that is quite easily worked out yourself!!) ... read more
