Leisurely start to the morning today, bit of a lie in getting up just after 0800hrs and drinking coffee in the room. This was mainly due to the fact we can't go snowmobiling this morning as they are completing "essential maintenance" along the route. This is something we were looking forward to doing as well. We finally decided to get up and head off for a breakfast at Ihop to fuel us for the rest of the day to get to San Francisco. Yet again their breakfast menu is huge and took ages to read through and choose what to eat. We all settled for different varieties of pancakes and some French toast to share. Portions are massive so very full now!! Back in the car now with about a four hour journey ahead of us. ... read more

Early start this morning waking up at 6.45, then just as we were getting ready we heard a strange noise coming from the window by stephs bed. It was a frog or a toad croaking away as if to wake us up! Natures alarm! We got ready then I went to reception to get some wifi to upload the last two days blog posts as we've struggled for wifi for the last 24 hours and to be honest I was too busy in Vegas to upload! When I get back I'll do a check through and upload some better photos. We've got a load spread over two cameras, my iPhone and video camera. It's been easier for me to upload the ones from my iPhone over the wifi rather than faff with sd cards, but to ... read more

Today was going to be another longish drive so we decided to start no later than 9.30-10. Steph and I decided to go to the Bellagio breakfast buffet and left Kerry still getting up as she wasn't up got it. We'd been to the buffet a couple of years ago for lunch so knew what to expect. They have everything you could ever think of for breakfast and you can eat as much as you like! We had some fruit, pancakes, french toast, eggs florentine and some coffee and juice. This time we didn't overheat like last time! And had a nice leisurely breakfast then we went for mother bit of gambling where I lost $20 then bought a few more gifts and ended up to get out stuff and check out, we'd one valet parking ... read more

So today has been loads of fun I really love Vegas. We decided to split up today which was great for a bit of space. Kerry went off on her travels and met back up with us for lunch about 1pm in Caesars Palace. Steph and I spent some time in the room sorting out our bags first thing after a lie in to figure out how much weight we had left in our bags for shopping today. We need up leaving the hotel room about 10.30 and saw Kerry downstairs am hour and half after she left us earlier. We headed out through the Bellagio hotel where we are staying and it took about five mins at least to get out of the hotel. I started filming on my video camera going through the display ... read more

Vegas Baby! - brought to you by Steph Today was a horrendously early start. We wanted to see the sunrise over the Grand Canyon which after a little research we realised would be at 0558hrs. This meant us all setting alarms for 0430hrs in order to be out of the room by 0510hrs to check out and drive the short distance through the park to the spot we decided would be best to see it from. The temperatures drop significantly overnight so when we left the room it was -1c, boots and winter coats required. We arrived at Yavapai Lodge lookout at 0530hrs and it was just starting to get light. The lookout had benches for people to sit and watch the sunrise (Katie took up residence here and did not move until we left as ... read more

We left the wigwam motel early about 8.20 and stopped to fill up on fuel. We've worked out its about $45 to fill up a tank which is about £27 so it's probably about 40% of the price back home. We'd worked out using a ful calculator back home that the trip should cost us about £350 in fuel which is about $585. It's definitely going to be significantly cheaper than that. We were going to work it out but we've lost track of what we've spent but estimations based on the first day using a full tank and doing approx 300 miles are that it will cost us about $405/£240 based on doing 2700 miles as we're taking the longer detour up through Yosemite to Tahoe, ending San Francisco or Frisco as a taxi driver ... read more

Off to the petrified forest - todays blog post is written by steph Today is a busy day, we plan to see the petrified forest and painted desert and have a little hike through them. But before we do that we have a 5hr car journey to get through. An early start was needed so alarms were set for 0630hrs. Those that know me know I'm far from being a morning person, so this was a bit of a struggle. As soon as bags were packed I was led straight to the coffee in the breakfast room and have now managed to wake up fully. We've been told to make sure the car is topped up with "gas" as there will not be much opportunity on the route today driving through desert land, so hoping to ... read more

We set off from the blue swallow motel about 9am after grabbing some coffee from the office and cinnamon muffins that nancy had made. We hit the road and for the next 100 miles drove through some of the best scenery we've seen on the trip. It was classic Route 66 country or what I imagined when I first started planning the trip. There were desert plains on the left and right dotted with green bushes and cacti. The sky was cloudy when we left but again turned blue with hot sun after an hour or so. We drove through Santa Rosa and followed the signs to the blue hole. It's something I'd read about before we left. It's basically a deep hole in the ground filled with water. When we drew up the facts read ... read more

After the large steak dinner last night we were a glutton for punishment and went back this morning for all you can eat buffet. We were pretty hungry after a monster sleep going to bed at 8.30pm! I don't think I've gone to bed that early since I was a kid! We were up at 7.30 and off to the buffet. We ordered pancakes and French toast whilst Kerry had just the pancakes. Whilst they were being cooked we went to the help yourself section and got some bacon, sausage patties, and some scrambled egg. There was the option of the biscuits and gravy which me and Kerry had been intrigued by the whole trip so far. We wanted to try it but it always looks so gross! The 'biscuits' are actually scones with the 'gravy' ... read more

Show me the way to Amarillo! - today's blog is written by steph..... Well the title says it all really, today is all about heading to Amarillo Texas, no doubt with some cheesy renditions of the song along the way. We all managed to get up fairly early today which will give us a good head start to getting there? We are becoming experts at working the waffle machine now (we will be full on Americans soon) 3 waffles made between us without any leaking or smoking! Kerry is starting off the driving this morning which she is pleased about as driver picks the music, needless to say she has lined up all her road trip driving tunes for car karaoke throughout the morning. Since leaving Oklahoma City and joining Route 66 again, it is exactly ... read more
