We decided to leave Isla earlier than anticipated and caught the ferry back with our Swedish friends who had a flight to Cuba. We had been moved to their dorm of 4 the previous night, so we knew they would wake us up when they left. We had booked an amazing deal through our hostel. We had been given the opportunity to reserve a double room in the hotel zone of Cancun for 350 pesos (approximately £17.50) for the night, including breakfast. We jumped at the opportunity as we just wanted the chance to relax, not having to fumble around with lockers and padlocks on bags everytime we wanted to get something out. It is little things like this that you don't really appreciate at home. Also, the hotel had a pool. We caught the ferry ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Isla Mujeres October 21st 2010

We had decided to travel onwards to Isla Mujueres on Thursday instead of Friday as it seemed most of our companions at Rio Playa were leaving. The Korean girl was off to Cuba, and our Swede friends and 2 more Swedes we met the previous night were all destined for Isla. We had originally decided to spend our last day in Playa on the beach, and as it had started raining we definitely decided it was time to move on. So we packed our bags with heavy hangovers, discarding many unrequired items, as we knew the journey was going to be tough in the heat. Before leaving Playa we went for one final meal at our favourite taco place with Martin, Andre and the New Zealander. The four of us including the Swedes then trudged in ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Akumal October 19th 2010

On our first morning at the Rio Playa hostel we were surprised to find edible breakfast. Just cornflakes, carton milk, bread and jam, but still a step up from the last place. The weather was a little overcast, but we had decided we wanted to visit the Caribbean island of Cozumel. We knew this place was a divers' hotspot but we decided we wanted to go for a look anyway. We sat around for a little while chatting with some guys at breakfast, and eventually they convinced us that it would be a complete waste of time to go there unless we did dive. They had been to snorkel there a few days earlier, and apparently there was nothing to see. So we decided that we would go to Akumal, a place which is known to ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Playa del Carmen October 16th 2010

We started our journey on a very early morning at Gatwick airport. It was very sad to say goodbye to our families, and surreal to think we would not see them for such a long time. However, we were very excited to think that by the end of the day we would be in Mexico. Our first flight was a little late, which meant that we walked from one plane to another for our connection in Madrid - no complaints from us. We had read a lot of bad reviews about the airline we were flying with, Air Europa, but we found they exceeded our expectations. We had free in-flight entertainment with loads of new films to choose from, and more importantly, on the 11 hour flight we had THREE meals. Wow. After a really long ... read more

So we are six days away from embarking on our world trip, and have decided it might be wise to test the waters and check that this travelblog actually works before relying on it to be our only point of contact with all of our beloveds back at home (or in France, or New Zealand/Canada/Colorado etc, you know who you are). The last few months have been pretty hectic for us with Luke working practically a million hours a week in a restaurant as well as holding down a full time job, and Katie working full time and stressing out planning the trip the rest of the time- which unfortunately is still nowhere nearly finished. We have come to the conclusion that perhaps planning for 'hangover days' is possibly a little excessive, and Luke has insisted ... read more
