So after the amazing Ubud I headed down to Nusa Lembongan; a small island just off the coast of the southern end of Bali. On the boat on the way over I met Ben an Aussie surfer and Frauke a German girl, and so the three of us hung out. I didn’t have any where to stay so Frauke, who’d been very organised and booked somewhere, let me share her room. She was also a diver and we convinced Ben to join us so the three of us ended up diving together for a few days. The diving was great... the first dive was ‘the manta dive’ and we saw three huge manta rays which were beautiful. On the first day we all went for lunch at a local warung (cheap Indonesian cafe) and I left ... read more

I really am not sure where to begin with the last week out here in Bali, Indonesia. I arrived expecting to find an island ruined by tourism. And i’m sure if i’d gone to Kuta or Seminyak that might be what I found, but I have had a spiritual experience (I know, I know!) out here in Bali... Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) would be proud!! After queuing amongst endless Aussie’s for a visa at Denpasar airport and fighting my way past endless taxI and moped drivers all yelling at me I headed out to the main road and flagged down a bemo (public minivan) to take me to Ubud – a town in the centre of BalI and known for its beautiful paddy fields and artistic locals. After two bemo rides and a moped (with ... read more

As I sit here bobbing about on the back (or stern I believe is the correct nautical term!) of a 30foot cruising boat with the Penang skyline starting to light up in the distance I wonder what on earth I am doing here.. and how i got here! Well actually I can sort of answer both – I met Chops when I was doing my DMT in Lanta (Thailand) and we got talking about doing a trip on his sailing boat... and unlike so many conversations you have with people you meet on your travels, this one actually happened! Amazing! I have learnt how to put the anchor down and how to tie a few nautical style knots (a skill i’m now very proud of!!) i've also learnt how to cook when rocking about on the ... read more

If ever you find yourself in Sumatra you really must go to Pulau Weh. It is well worth the flights, boats and buses that are required to get there!! It is stunning; great scenery, people and food... and scuba diving... which is why I find myself here. The drive from the airport includes stunning vistas - locals working in the rice fields, coconut trees galore and simple towns rebuilt after the tsunami that devastated Banda Aceh in December 2004 (something like 20,000 people died here that day). After meeting 3 other people (from France, Germany and France) and all sharing a taxi from the airport to a hotel I finally feel like I’m back in the travel groove!! And I’m loving it!! The lovely Sandra (one of the aforementioned Frenchies!) is a gem. We get on ... read more

I seem to be living on buses!! Yesterday I was on one for 10 hours and today I find myself on another one!! Thankfully this one should only be two or three hours! I have finally left the island life of Thailand and am back on the mainland! Jason arrived in Lanta and of course after a week of not much work when he wasn’t here.. as soon as he arrived i get offered work left, right and centre!! Typical. Well it was too good to turn down so i did 3 out of the 4 days offered and had a blast. I have loved diving in Lanta.. in fact without the diving i get a bit bored.. i have decided that i have to stay busy! .. sitting on a beach and reading a book ... read more

It’s been a long time since I last wrote and told you all how I was doing... but there has been a good reason (ish!) for my slack blogging skills – i’ve not been travelling! Let me explain. I arrived on Koh Lanta at the end of November and since then have not budged. In fact I have been on Koh Lanta now for 80 days... and I love it here. When I last wrote I had just arrived with Jason (more about Jason later) and we did a few touristy things before he left and I started my dive master training. Well I am now a PADI certified dive master and have been working as a freelance dive master on Koh Lanta for the past few weeks. I have loved every minute spent under water. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta December 14th 2010

Well Koh Lanta is proving to be everything i hoped! .. well almost everything (i'll get to that in a minute!) I have got my little place which is great - good location, clean, internet, tv, fridge .. but no sink weirdly?! - typically Thai; they must have forgotten to put one in !!.. so i have a bucket instead!! The dive mster training is great. Hard work.. up at 6.30 when i'm on the boat .. 5.30 when its a Hin Daeng day (that's when we see the Manta's though, so it's worth it!) .. but i love it. Blue Planet Divers is proving to be the perfect place to do this course. I passed all my theory exams (including physics!) which was, quite frankly, a miracle! and now i'm doing all the practical stuff... ... read more

I left you whilst still in Krabi where i managed to tone my leg muscles fairly impressively by walking the 1237 steps at the Tiger Temple; I had decided i should do a little site seeing after the previous day of doing nothing, so after much deliberating over the cost of tours versus hiring motorbikes versus buses i decided that by far the safest ,and actually cheapest way, would be to take a local bus. On the bus i met two lovely German girls who i then spent the day with! So, whilst climbing up the aforementioned 1237 steps i think i must have lost my own body weight in sweat ... and by the time i reached the top (which did seem to take quite a long time?!) i looked like i might explode! ...and ... read more

Well here is the first blog of the trip! I can't believe i'm finally here.. again! Firstly i have to say i have never seen so many wheel chairs on one flight.. seriously there were literally 10 wheel chairs on my flight from Heathrow to Mumbai?! Anyway! As soon as i arrived in Thailand i remembered why i like it so much here.. everyone is so friendly! I chatted to people on the plane and then on the sky train.. which by the way is genius!( - so easy to get around .. and cheap as chips to get from the airport to sukhumvit.) Sukhumvit is home to Nana (also where i was staying) which is where you will find Western men perving after Thai women every which way you look.. on the one hand grose, ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island April 12th 2010

Well this is it. It’s finally over. I went to bed last night in Hong Kong and tonight I will be sleeping on a plane heading for Heathrow; and the end of my journey. I’m not too proud to admit that I had a little cry last night! Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to seeing my friends and family… i‘m even looking forward to seeing everyone at work… I just don’t want this to end. To say it has been incredible, an adventure, 4 months of nothing but fun and excitement does not really do it justice! I can’t really describe it! I’ve had a blast for four months and now I have to get back to reality. I have been grateful every day to be in a situation where I am able to ... read more
