PS It may go against the philosophy of backpacking, but taxis can sometimes be ridiculously cheap - one hour across Beijing for a pound - and can help avoid some of the language probs.
Not Vlad Impressed with your progress so far - didn't expect a diary entry so early on. Does a man with a gun stand over you while you use the internet? Do they even have English keyboards?

Sounds like you have dealt with the language OK, wait until you get to China when they don't have letters, just little pictures!

Now finished our year long, round the world trip, during which Carolyn was able to carry her backpack and we both became experts at packing and unpacking in double quick time.
