Our departure from Wellington was not quite as early as we had hoped, as we have collected so much stuff in the 9 months that we lived there! We ended up piling everything into boxes and chucking them into the car, to later discover that we had about 40 knives and forks, 2 sieves, yet no saucepans or bowls! We finally hit the road at around 6 in the evening for our journey up to Hastings. We had arranged to stay with a couple who lived in a small cottage in the middle of the hills, who we had met through a website called couchsurfing. This is basically an online travellers network of people with spare rooms/couches open to travellers. We had heard that it was a really great way to meet the locals and get ... read more

The end of our time is Wellington has come, so as its the last time we will have easy access to a computer we will give all you avid readers a little update of our final days in the Capital. Julia went away with her parents between Christmas and New Year to see a little bit of the North island, and even bullied the whole family into jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane to do yet another skydive. She went black water rafting in the Waitomo Caves, visited a living Maori thermal village, and finished the expedition off with another quad biking trip. While Julia was away having a whale of a time, Dan was slaving away in order to be able to put some food on the table. Christmas in retail means long hours, ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all the lovely cards and presents :) We hope everyone at home had a great Christmas with lots of snow! Our Christmas day was very different to what we are used to...it began with opening presents and our stockings from Santa, then we headed off to the beach for a paddle in the sea. We were planning to have a picnic on the beach but it was very windy, so we ate that in the car instead. In the afternoon we headed home, and spent the rest of the day out in the garden playing frisbee and lounging around, then had a huge barbequed feast thanks to our housemate, Scott. We both got some great presents, lots of lovely English chocolate (the chocolate here isn't very nice), a book all ... read more

It’s been a while since we last did a blog. We haven’t got much to write about, however we though we would show you some of the eyesores around Wellington… We’re still working hard, saving the pennies for our next big adventures…Julia is still working as a nanny, enjoying the playgrounds and beaches during the weeks, and exploring Wellington at the weekends. Dan on the other hand has become a sales super star with Telecom and is earning heaps of commission. He joins Julia and the boys on his days off for picnics and walks around the clifftops. Other news from our side of the world…we have sold our beloved campervan Joey, and are going to camp our way around the North island, so will be braving tents and wild campsites for 2 months! We have ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo July 14th 2009

The weeks coming up to our birthdays, we debated what to do...as it had been a while since we last had a break (almost 2 weeks!), and we felt like we should get on the road again and make the most of this beautiful country. The destination this time: Taupo. On Sunday morning we packed (Julia saw a three day trip worthy of a large suitcase) and headed off on the 5-hour trek up north, to New Zealand’s biggest lake. Not far in to the journey we stopped off at a beach on the Kapiti coast for a little walk. It was a lovely little place, perfect for somewhere to just chill out. Anyway, with no time to waste we soon set off on the road again, only stopping at an American diner called '66 on ... read more

We moved into our new house and everything has been sweet as (bro)...its nice to have a roof over our heads and central heating at last (although double glazing hasn't quite reached NZ yet). Dan has been offered a permanent/rest-of-the-year job at Telecom, providing we stay until Christmas - so change of plan again! Joey (the campervan) has been getting on a bit and struggles with hilly Wellington, so we decided to buy a car for day-to day use. It's a lovely Toyota Corona, called Norman. The hard grind of day-to-day work had begun to take it's toll on us, so we thought it was time we went on holiday for the weekend, and tested out our new motor on a road trip. Our destination: Mt Ruapehu, for a weekend in the snow. Being as organised ... read more

It's been a while since we last did a blog, so thought we'd update you on what we've been up to... We arrived in Wellington very very poor, and jobless. After a week of job hunting we stumbled across a job in a vineyard in Flat Point, 2 hours drive from Wellington. We headed up there, and along the unsealed roads to a farm in the middle of nowhere. We lived in a batch by the sea, with just some mice and some Brazillians for company, and had an awesome time! The work wasn't too hard - although the days were long - and it was gorgeous weather the whole time. After our 3 days here, we left back to the real world to job hunt again. We spent the next couple of weeks moving backwards ... read more

Our final stretch began with Queenstown, which is known as the adrenalin capital of the world - so it doesn't take a genius to figure out what type of thing we were going to be doing there. One of the main attractions was the CANYON SWING. This basically a swing into a canyon. It starts off with a 60m freefall followed by a 200m arc that happens as soon as the swing kicks into action (Thankfully it did). That was really fun although only lasts a few seconds really, the best bit being the fact that the staff are the sons of the devil, and like to have fun by pretending to push you and then pulling you back. Julia was sat on her chair for about 5 minutes before they finally let her go, as ... read more

So back to Christchurch for a few days, and the start of another road trip, this one being our longest to date. As we had rushed off last time, we decided to spend a little more time seeing the sights around Christchurch before hitting the road. We began by going punting, which was nice and relaxing, and pretty cheap. We had a punter from the UK guiding us, and Julia got to drive for a bit, which was slightly scary. We found an indoor crazy golf centre which was very fun...it had lots of crazy courses - exactly like it said on the tin. After Christchurch our next stop was Dunedin - a rather long journey which took up the majority of the day. The best way to describe Dunedin is very hilly, and driving a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura March 13th 2009

So we arrive in the land of Kaikoura, our intention to find work for a month in this tourist town. We begin by going to a hostel called Dusky Lodge, where we can work in exchange for our accomodation. We initially sign up for a weeks work, and go out job hunting later that day. It rapidly becomes apparent that in order to get some sort of retail or catering job you need to stay for at least 3 months, and as we only plan on staying in the area for one month, we are unsuccessful. So along with been assured there are plenty of jobs, we also discover that now is not the right time or place for us. Kaikoura is a lovely place to visit, but over a month is just far too long ... read more
