I’ve been gone for shy of a year and a half and I’m heading home. Things have come together and it seems its time. To you I know and to the ones who just read you might have noticed I have deleted some of my posts. Mostly because, as I read back on them, I realize they are shit; Naïve, wide eyed drivel that only the pre-pubescent teen may find enlightening much like this one. Yeah, I’m my biggest critique. Fuck knows why I started this blog in the first place other than self-praise. In fact this one will prolly be deleted so if you’re reading, enjoy this blog that will die an internet death. I hope I have changed since my first days arriving in Changchun, a massive unknown city not unlike so many in ... read more

Face I had learned somethings in Thailand that have become more and more helpful as I travel again thought south east Asia. The concept of "Face" is the most glaring of these. I guess it basically translates into social standing. Let's do an example: Bill catches some squid this mornin and happily brings it back to his wife. His wife, seeing his tiny amount of squid throws a fucking hissyfit on the front lawn (she wanted more obviously) and screams bloody Mary at the still smiling Bill . Meanwhile, across the road, a beach restaurant full of people watch this scene unfold. Who loses the most face here? Well Bill and his wife defiantly are the ones but his wife more so because she's screaming and bill is smiling. In most of Asia people don't show ... read more

There have been lots of funny things that have happened lately but I wanted to post something just to get everyone up to speed on the last few weeks. The edge of the world Good bye china. As I got on my plane in shanghai I felt one thing more then others: relief. I was heading to South Africa, an English speaking country, where I could have a break from the mental drain that is Asia. I love asia, but sometimes you just want to sit down and have a burger in place where your shit Chinese and masterful charades aren't necessary. I had to stop in Johannesburg before heading to cape town and as I landed I noticed something. Snow. For the first time in decades every province in SA was hit by snow. This ... read more

So, I get off the train after 8 hours and it's not raining. I'm stoked, I'll I've heard is that Beijing is fucked with rain. I get out a cig for victory and bam! Starts to down pour and I don't have an umbrella or jacket and my bag holding laptop and other shits is starting to get soaked. I run to the taxi line with 1000 or so other wet Asian people hoping a shit load of taxis will shows up and save us all. This doesn't happen and after 20 min I'm drenched and the line hasn't moved. During all this time you have dudes who drive normal cars offerring you rides and crazy inflated prices cause "A" your desperate and "B" your a foreigner and "C" they think your retarded. They assume you ... read more

I'm taking a break from packing my bag. I need to get the next year of my life, in clothing and nessecities, into a backpack that seemed a hell of a lot bigger before i accumulated a year of shit in an apartment. The sacrifices :warm clothes will be left, a cat (becasue they die in backpacks) as well as a 3D MAO picture which i dont want to give up but is to big. I finished my contract yesterday and had a farewell party with a whole wack of people i've met over the year. I didn't even realise how many people i had met till we got to the bar (or that i could remember that many names). I think the recovery ain't helping my motivation to pack. In the next day I'll be ... read more

I'm upon my finale four months in Changchun and am starting to prepair for what is next for me. Yeah im jumping the gun a bit but when your almost done a race it's hard not to look at the finish line. At the end of this leg ill begin my mini trek down through china for a few weeks...after that there is talk of vietnam but who fucking knows. I've been thinking alot of what im going to miss about this place. The people in Changchun are, for the most part, extremely friendly. In the entire 8 months I have been here, I can honestly tell you, I have difficulty counting the real probelms I have had interacting with people. Yes there are language barriers but, as my dad once told me, smiling is a ... read more

There are many things you can talk about when you speak of the best parts of living in china. The food, the smells, the buildings, and the people all come to mind. But one of the things that hits you in the face is B-grade attractions. Places where health and safety laws are told to fuck off and fun is put at the front of the line. I love this part of china not just because it makes me laugh consistantly, but that everyday people in china just dont seem to notice or care. This is entertainment in its most disfigured and enjoyable form. Before you come to northern china you try to educate yourself on everything that is around you (i think most people do this where ever they go). You become a mini-encyclopedia on ... read more

Before I started writing this blog i was reading others. I'd always wonder why there were big gaps of time between entries with people. I get it now. You lose track of time. Not everyday is exciting, and most are mundane. One day bleeds to the next. Teaching English is a wierd experience. You speak the language your whole life and then suddenly start selling that ability as a commodity to be gained by people. I feel, more often then not, like im some sort of actor with a lesson plan as a script. Teaching grammer has got to be one of the biggest loads of shit out there for someone like me. I know what to say, how to spell it and how it should sound....but if you ask me what present continuous tense is ... read more

I have been struggling to write my next blog. I'm nearing my three month mark here and there has been alot that has happened. I still love it but difficulties and unexpected smiles are still popping up. I am beginning to develop a routine and slowly losing my connections with how i felt at the beginning of this trip. I think thats just part of traveling. It's a differrent life you begin to live. As soon as you step off the plane into a new country you can't help but be starry eyed. The novelty and excitment of adventure takes you over and even the worst situations dont seem so bad. You forget that you are far away from home and you ride the euphoria of adventure. This is definatly unrealistic when living in a foriegn ... read more

As it turns out, strangely enough, my days off here are exactly the same days off that i had back at home. Around the world mondays and tuedays seem to be the days that i was given to relax and enjoy the world. This last "weekend" i decided it was about time i did some adventuring around china and booked a ticket to see the great wall. The place i picked was Shan Hai guan, a place best known for where the wall meets the sea. I had seen this on the TV show ''An idiot abroad"where carl goes to china. I had a desire to walk in this awkward man's footsteps. I got the first ticket i could get which was a "hard sleeper'' train there, at midnight, and a ''hard seat'' train back and ... read more
