Guilin – My re-entry back into "Real China" After nearly two weeks of civilisation in Hong Kong re-entering “real China” was always going to be tough because it’s so easy to fall back into your old ways when surrounded by places and people you feel comfortable with. Although it’s very strange to say this but I did actually miss the noise, the semi organised chaos and the many Chinese special character traits that are a part of everyday life here. On the train from HK to the boarder everything was really relaxed and the journey was so easy, but as I stamped out of HK and crossed the border it was like someone flicked a switch in my fellow passenger’s brains to engage auto-spit mode and to increase the volume of speech by at least 50%. ... read more

Hong Kong – A catch up with a great friend and a holiday whilst traveling, perfect! For the past 10 days I’ve been in Hong Kong, my destinations of late have become progressively more representative of life back home apart from not having a job of course. HK is very different to Shanghai and has a very western feel to it, it was like stepping into London but with intense heat and a lot more pollution. After yet another delayed flight, a protest in the airport by the passenger and my bags being lost I eventually arrived in HK 24 hours later than I had hoped. At some point in China I’m hoping an internal flight might get me to my destination within 4 hours of the allocated time but I’m not holding my breath. After ... read more

Shanghai…..Could this place be any more different from the rest of China??? When I first rocked up at Shanghai I was lost for words and by the time I left I had many very carefully selected words for the place. As you can probably guess I’m not in love with Shanghai but sadly for all the wrong reasons, although putting this to one side it has it’s own unique qualities and is a city unlike no other. Whilst approaching Shanghai by bus it was apparent things were going to be very different here from the rest of China, sitting in the traffic beside me were Rolls Royce’s, Porches and all manner of BMW’s and Mercedes, sorry Martin not many Volvo’s apart for a classic 340 in beige with a mix of different coloured replacement panels! As ... read more

Tunxi – Relaxation and hiking or as it turned out just relaxation. After the amazing hike up Mt Hua Shan near Xian I decided I had a taste for more hiking and getting away from the cities for a while. So following a recommendation from a friend at the hostel I decided to head to a large city called Hefei and then onto Tunxi to climb “Yellow Mountain” or as the locals call it Huangshan. After a very entertaining 16 hour train journey followed by a 5 hour bus ride I arrived in Tunxi. The hostel was pretty cool and the city was very relaxed with only one small touristy area to speak off. The train journey was really very comfortable and being with 5 Chinese guys in a small cabin was very entertaining, well it’s ... read more

Xian – The point where I realised my limitations and my fears got the better of me….. Xian is a very modern city with pockets of history scattered amongst modern day high-rise buildings with a twist. They have tried to incorporate minor traditional features such as flared overhanging roofs or temple looking facades I’m not sure that it works but you can’t fault them for trying. And slap bang in the middle of McD’s and Starbucks are the famous Bell Tower and Drum Tower, again I'm not sure on the town planning regulations here but hey I guess it works for them. I decided not to visit the two towers but just take photos from the outside because I didn’t need views of the most famous golden arches in the world. Xian felt a lot less ... read more

PingYao – The Ancient city and the journey from hell so far on this trip. For the last 3 nights I have been in the Ancient city of PingYao, the guide book describes it as the best opportunity to see “the old China in action, being possibly the best preserved ancient walled city in the whole of the country.” It’s fair to say it’s an ancient city and a million miles different from Beijing which was exactly what I needed. More on the city in a moment. As you will have read from my previous blogs I was reluctantly taking an internal flight between Beijing and Pingyao because I could not get a train. Having said that a small part of me was quite relieved not to have the hassle of the trains and buses and ... read more

All in all you’re just another brick in the wall (before you say it I know this song wasn’t written about the great wall, but it was the only song that sprung to mind containing a reference to a wall.) After my last blog it might have seemed as if Beijing was getting the better of me, well thankfully I’m pleased to say that was not the case. Don’t get me wrong the spitting and general lack of personal space is something I may never get use to but whilst in China I really have no choice but to accept it. It’s my last day in Beijing before I fly to Pingyao, well somewhere within two hours of it on bus because that was the closest I could fly to. My final few days in Beijing ... read more

Beijing – Did someone spike my drinks!!! After touching down at Beijing Airport everything seemed quite normal and it was so easy to find the right train, go straight from the train to the subway and get off at my stop. But from this point forward nothing else was “normal.” I don’t know where to begin when trying to describe this place, it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before which is great because after all that’s why I’m travelling. The vast number of people, the pace of everything, the heat, the pollution, the non stop spitting, the lack of any English and the neon signs can be over whelming to say the least. So far I’ve been ill, had numerous headaches and walked miles just to get from one place to the next but still I’m ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Jeju July 14th 2011

Well stage one of my journey has come to an end! My memories of South Korea will always stay with me as a country who’s people make it a truly amazing place, if you’ve ever thought of coming here and had reservations for whatever reason then I very much recommend making it a place to visit. The people I’ve met both local and foreign have made this an unforgettable start to my travelling, if the trip continues in this way then I’m in for one hell of a good time. My last week in South Korea involved an internal flight to an Island called Jeju for 3 days, 2 days in Busan and 3 days in Seoul. Jeju Island also known as the Hawaii of South Korea was stunning but came with the normal random weather, ... read more

OK so I guess following my last update and the messages I have received from many of you you’re all awaiting to hear about the “Penis Park.” Typical I come all this way and the thing you are most interested in is a park full of phallic sculptures. Well I was half expecting to see statues of most of my mates there but as hard as I looked I couldn’t see Marty, Gav or Ed anywhere, you boys must have been well hidden. The Penis Park or as it’s actually known Haeshindang Park is to say the least a little strange, but it’s an easy conversation starter because there was always something popping up. There was even a cannon like penis that rocked up and down, you’ve got to love the time and thought someone has ... read more
