Geo: 21.3667, 95.4667Today, we took a leisurely walk in the morning around the base of the mountain with a local guide to learn about the volcanic geology, flora and fauna of the surrounding ecosystem. We then visited a medicinal plant nursery where we learned about traditional herbal medicine preparation using selected forest plants sustainably harvested from our environs. Then, we headed to the town of Popa to visit the fruit and vegetable market where local people come to buy and sell foods and wares. After lunch we departed for Bagan, visiting a toddy palm plantation where we learn how every part of the palm—flower, nectar, sugar—is used to make food, alcohol and handicrafts. Late in the afternoon we reached Bagan, where we had dinner and will spend the next two nights.Bagan was the original "holy land" ... read more

Geo: 21.3667, 95.4667We woke to our last morning in Inle Lake. As we walked around the hotel grounds on our way to breakfast, we noticed about a dozen military personnel perched at various spots around the facility, a few holding machine guns. (In Myanmar, it is illegal to photograph the military and police, so sorry, no pictures.) As we ate our breakfast, the table of distinguished looking Asian gentlemen and their wives next to us had finished and we're leaving. As they exited the doors of the restaurant, the military guys all assembled in formation and left with them. We then learned that we had been having breakfast with the Prime Minister of Thailand. Yep....that's how we roll. We then took a tour bus with our tour expedition leader, guides, and the nine in our group, ... read more

Geo: 20.5672, 96.9159We began the day with a visit to a protected wetland sanctuary that's home to more than 350 bird species. We saw a number of herons, warblers, cormorants, barbets, wild ducks and egrets. We had a Burmese lunch at Inthar Heritage House, a beautiful wooden structure built on stilts in the middle of the lake. Downstairs is a Burmese cat sanctuary, the product of a breeding program established to import and restore the elegant breed to its native Burma, where it had become extinct. We also visited a local cheroot factory where Burmese cigars are made, stopped by a longboat building shop, took a look at the floating tomato gardens, toured the gilded Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, and visited a weaving factory. The average annual income in Myanmar is about $200; 70% of that is ... read more

Geo: 20.5672, 96.9159Today, we encountered the natural and cultural dimensions of Inle Lake—its diverse ecosystems and traditional lifestyles of the Intha people who have lived here for centuries. Around the lake, markets are held in different villages on a rotating schedule, and we visited one of these colorful sites of commerce frequented by Shan, Pa-O and Burmese people. Inle Lake is also known as "Venice of the East". We explored the series of canals via the longboats. Experiencing life on the lake from a local perspective, we went to a Buddist Pagoda, and had an authentic Myanmar lunch at a converted home along the canals. This afternoon we observed the other key traditional livelihood on the lake—fishing. We saw fishing using several of the unique local fishing methods.... read more

Geo: 20.7192, 96.8235This morning we took a 2 hour flight to the town of Heho, continuing on a 2 hour drive to Kalaw and Green Hills Elephant Camp, where we learned about Asian elephants. The camp protects a large tract of native forest habitat to shelter and sustain wildlife, including elephants. We hiked on nature trails in the jungle, then prepared and fed the elephants one of their daily meals, and helped scrub and wash them in the river After our visit with the elephants we drove to Inle Lake, then cruised on "longboats" to the lakeside resort where we'll spend the next three nights.... read more

Geo: 16.7837, 96.1568It is currently February 1st, at 10:07 AM here, and 10:37 PM on January 31st at home. 11-1/2 hour time difference. I did know know that was a thing. Our adventure began very early in Yangon, the former colonial capital of Myanmar. The exceptionally friendly people of the former British colony known as Burma were very welcoming after long being isolated under a military dictatorship. We were supposed to land around 5:00 AM, but the pilot aborted during the approach. Fog was sitting right over the airport and they were not comfortable going in. Shortly after that, they closed the airport until the fog burned off. So, we circled Yangon for 2 hours, but got to see a beautiful sunrise. Once we landed, we were met by a representative of Natural Habitat Adventure (our tour ... read more
