David, To answer your question; although it is the rainy season here the mosquito’s are not really a problem even on the jungle trek we did near Kuching and today near Miri. Most people wear shorts and have a quick spray of repellent and there a few incidents of problems (some isolated cases of Dengue fever) but no Malaria. Maybe being close to the sea (South China) shore helps. We (Jo, Dot & John) did a good trek before lunch today (just got back and girls are showering) up and around a place called Canada Hill which is within sight of Miri city but still surrounded by steep jungle clad slopes.
