Machu Picchu So we made it to Machu Picchu last weekend, most definitely the highlight of my trip thus far. We spent 3 days in the small town of Aguas Calentes. REally good to get out of Cuzco for a while. Aguas Calientes has no cars, is 3,000´lower than Cuzco and the air is so fresh. There are some hot springs there as well where we spent a few hours each night. My professor even bought the entire class a round of beers there, excellent time. The first day we hiked a couple miles through the jungle to some waterfalls. A few of us jumped in the water, which was very invigorating. I´ve been in South America for over 2 weeks now and this was my first glimpse of the jungle, really nice change of scenery. ... read more

Well the past week has been fairly busy. My class made another trek up to Saqsaywaman on Saturday. We had our teacher along this time which made things more interesting. After lunch at the ruins we played a game of soccer with some local peasant children then hit the trail on our horses. Probably the slowest, laziest horses I have ever seen, but we had an awesome time. We were able to go much higher on the mountain and get a better view of the city and the Saqsaywaman ruins (refer to pic). On Tuesday we headed to the Sacred Valley (45 mins from Cuzco) to check out the Pisac ruins in the morning and the Virgen del Carmen Festival in the afternoon. The Pisac ruins are by far the coolest I have seen thus ... read more

Well I´m a little more settled in now in Cuzco. We have met a lot of new Cuzqueno friends that have been gracious enough to take us out on the town, etc. My roommate, Galen, had arrived in Cuzco earlier then the rest of us and knew the city a little bit. He offered to take us up to the best Inca ruins in the city limits of Cuzco, Sachsaywaman (or ¨sexy woman¨), a couple days ago. It was my first taste of the what the Inca´s were capable of. Pretty amazing stonework, some stones weighing up to 185 tons, yet fitting together perfectly. It is the site of the Inca´s last stand of against the Spanish. It is also just a 20 minute walk up the hill from my dorm. It has been way ... read more

Well I made it to Peru . I met up with two of my classmates in Lima on Friday night and we got a hostal in the Miraflores district, a new suburban neighborhood on the bluffs of the Pacific Ocean. Lima was a bit gloomy but we found plenty of things to do. Went out to dinner and had our first Pisco Sour´s (pisco is similar to brandy, then mixed with sugar and whipped with an egg) and had some South American steak. We then got up at 3:30am Saturday morning to catch our flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival at our dorms we had numerous cups of coca leaf tea to deal with the altitude sickness (Cuzco sits at 11,000´). We were then served lunch which is a sit down 3 course meal, which along ... read more
