Believe it or not, they are two different places. In actuality they are technically suppose to be spelled the sameway. But, in Chinese, the word is not based only on the spelling, in pinyin, but also the tone of the pronounciation. The first, Shaanxi, has a dip, the second, Shanxi, does not. Xi means west. Shan means mountain. Shanxi = west of the mountain. I am in Xi'an, in the Province of Shaanxi. again, xi = west, but shan is the name of a river. Therefore, Shaanxi = west of the Shan River.
