Geo: -25.2451, 130.986Well here we are in the middle of May. May 16, 2016 and Mac is 60. Yipee. Like all good 60 year olds he has been celebrating all month so how could this day be any better. We continued our commitment to sunrises and after a quick little rip and tear of the birthday paper, Mac was greeted by Lewis and the group with warm birthday wishes. Another sunrise this morning, complete with a little cloud cover to add a bit of variety to the show. There were group poses and yoga poses as we hugged the side of the road for this morning's light show that encompassed the horizon as well as the reflections on both Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The real adventure however, was just around the corner. The 10 km complete base walk. ... read more

Geo: -25.2451, 130.986In the countdown stakes this is the birthday eve but who had time to think about that with a 5.20 start to the day because we were chasing the sun again this morning. True to form we have been non starters for breakfast, opting instead for a juice and an apple. There is so much food during the day and we do wake up each morning feeling like we have just eaten! The first trip today was with Lewis, a central coast NSW boy who has his degrees in Ecology and Conservation. So easy going and personable and has so much knowledge to share. The drive out to Kata Tjuta takes around 40 minutes at a leisurely pace and we are actually in the vehicle as the sun peeks over the horizon. Richard and Loraine ... read more

Geo: -25.2451, 130.986So, yesterday was about minimalist David but today was about loquacious John. Every twist and turn, rock and rubble, waterfall, tree or animal had a story. The 380 km journey just disappeared under the rhythm of his voice. We did hear the same departure joke about "the Todd River being so crystal clear you could see the sandy bottom" but that was the end of the similarities in commentary. And have to say we do lap up the stories and facts. Although, continue to think that we need to be mindful that there are versions of the "facts" and some elements, like the 28 kg feral cat, could be whoppers gone into overdrive.John arrived dead on time which was handy because it was 6 degrees outside and we could not believe our luck. We were first ... read more

Geo: -23.7022, 133.887We have been regulars with AATKings but they were all booked out so we gave Emu Run a crack. It was the same itinerary, in a small bus and we did enjoy it. Our driver and guide was David, from Montreal. Last night's dinner was hosted by Zac from Quebec. Looks like the Canadians like Australia. And for anyone looking for a job there is plenty of work here in the territory. Seems that all industries are desperate for staff! There are so many young people from all around the world working here and they rave about the lifestyle. Can't see us moving here in our retirement though. The day began with continued coughs and splutters but there's no down time for tourists. This is another day on the road churning up the kilometres and getting up ... read more

Geo: -23.7004, 133.881Was it the best night's sleep ever? Not really but so much better than our China train experience. And the luxury of the sunrise from our own viewing windows was worth it. And to be honest, there was another bunk above the 3/4 bed, but I had rejected that one out of hand just to have the fun of making the one bed option work. It was a little bit funny at 2.30 when I had to clamber over Mac for the nightly toilet run, but with a bit of a giggle and a stretch it all worked out.We had to repack everything ready to disembark after breakfast at Alice Springs. We are getting good at this light weight overnight option. The total trip on The Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide is a three ... read more

Geo: -12.4623, 130.846No need for the hurry up this morning, it was full steam ahead to the foyer ready for the pickup for the train ride. The 20 minute bus ride took us out through the suburbs to Berrimah to be greeted by 38 carriages of The Ghan stretching along the platform for 980 metres. Yep, that was nearly 1 km of train! And we thought we had hit the jackpot when we we were given carriage A, only to find it was at the end of the train. The hike, in the heat, carrying the luggage was almost a marathon. But every staff member smiled and greeted us at every doorway and assured us it would be worth it.And it truly was.Cabin A5/6 was a suite complete with a a 3/4 bed, a bathroom (well ... read more

Geo: -13.1567, 130.77On the road again, actually on the "same" road again, but this time in a smaller 21 seater AATKings coach. A very intimate little squeeze to get us out to Litchfield National Park via Northern Territory's tidiest town in 1999, Batchelor. (It does make you wonder who has been the winner for the last 16 years.)Our coach captain today was Cameron and he looked 12 (with a beard) but says he finished high school 8 years ago and is a born and bred local who grew up in Palmerston. Unlike his peers, he has not "escaped" from Darwin, preferring to stay in the top end. He did a great job and looked after everyone and provided some "local" perspective on stories including telling some "whoppers" just to see if we were listening.Distance, distance and ... read more

Geo: -13.8245, 131.835Yeah, we did it. The alarm went off at exactly the right time this morning. Joined the mob in Galloping Jacks for breakfast...our first formal one of the trip (we have been sticking to an apple and juice.)Not sure if we are water nymphs or water rats but it was back to the 'cruise' again this morning. This time in the impressive Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine Gorge.Katherine is the fourth largest town in the Northern Territory and is often referred to as the "cross roads of the north" and it is a short 29 kms from the gorge. The Katherine Region has an area the equivalent of Victoria and welcomes some 300000 tourist a year. This group of tourists's first stop was to the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre and this is one with a view. ... read more

Geo: -14.4657, 132.264Another classic day at the top end. We are big fans of Kakadu. Saw it yesterday from the air and today we joined a cruise of the Alligator River to get up close and personal with the wetlands before heading off to Katherine. Not a bad pair of book ends to celebrate Mother's Day.It was a 7.45 muster at the bus and agedMac had trouble with the time again and we only just made it by the skin of our teeth. But make it we did and our 17 fellow travellers were seated and ready to go for our first stop at Nourlangie Rock for a look at the second collection of Aboriginal art in the rock gallery. Geo: -12.6767, 132.828That's been a big day of tourist adventures. The alarm went off at 5.30 because (agedMac) had missed the adjustment for the change in time zone but this did turn out to be a handy addition because we only just made it to the foyer in time for our 7.15 pickup by AATKings Tour.It was a very large coach for just the 19 travellers in our group. After a false start ( we had to return to the depot to retrieve luggage that was forgotten) we were heading along the Stuart Highway (again) pointed due south towards Adelaide. The tone of the trip was established early by Mac. He spotted a 60 km road sign and commented that they must have known he was coming! Talk about egocentric! Everything 60 is about the Birthday Boy ... read more
