Geo: 10.7592, 106.662Woke up to celebrate our wedding anniversary! How lucky are we.Breakfast AGAIN but definitely toned down to the bare essentials of cereal and fruit. It seems like a marathon of gluttony and it is not so much "at the table" that hurts it's the aftermath of continually feeling bloated. We tried to walk it off with our APT tour guide Twee. But really didn't get into stride. It was a bus tour with stopovers and inspections of some of the architectural highlights of District 1 followed by a walk of a couple of blocks back to the hotel. Took in the Notre Dame Cathedral (people were refused entry because of bare shoulders), the Post Office and the Independence Palace. And this is for @Fiona and @Andrea,: the tiles on the floor of the Post Office were ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662The loud speaker was blaring. The shrill voice barked instructions. The marching music was bouncing off the high rise buildings. It was a rude awakening to Day 4. I seriously thought I had woken up in the opening chapters of Marsden's "Tomorrow when the war began!" The streets were blocked off and from our 12th floor window we could see yellow shirts, red shirts and green shirts moving down Uncle Ho's avenue. And it was only 5.30 am!Forget level 1 and breakfast, we made our way instead towards Uncle Ho to get a closer look. There were groups everywhere all being organised into lines and ranks by extremely bossy women! One lady near us whacked the bottom of a grown man to get him in line! There were swords and machetes, martial arts, bands ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. That was so much better. 8 hours straight. Slept so deeply in a room perfectly chilled, didn't even miss the water bed. And without putting the jinx on ourselves, the stomachs were rock solid!Breakfast recounts are going to get boring! The options are amazing. Suffice to say that the Ying and Yang selections are obvious. Mac and Richard think they are dining Brazilian and Loraine and I opt for the more cholesterol friendly fruit and grains choice.Today was walking and gawking. Just two days into the trip and we are tackling the every which way pattern of the traffic like a local. The secret is to move forward with confidence. The first attempt was a failure - we baulked at the crossing despite the encouragement of a very bony, wizened local who volunteered ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662Well good morning Vietnam. We woke to wet streets in Ho Chi Minh and overcast skies. But this was just the teaser to a scorcher at 35 degrees with 80% humidity. The alarm sounded at 6 am to ensure a 6.45 reconnaissance with the Sheraton Breakfast Buffet. What a spread. If you can imagine a particular food item - it was somewhere to be found. Ethnicity and culture and culinary preferences were no barrier in this setup. Acres of tables ladened with food and all manned and "womanned" by the most accommodating and friendly crew. Mixed up the cereals with fruits and yogurt, found the hot veggies and noodles, cracked the omelette bar and added lashings of bacon. Not content with the 16 spread offerings, Richard managed to produce a squeeze tube of Vegemite for ... read more

Geo: 10.7592, 106.662YES, YES, YES, YES (for the movie buffs....l bet you want what she's having.) Today is THE day. After counting down for 150 days, our seed of an idea is real.  It really is only a hop skip and a jump to Vietnam and after careful co-ordination all roads from Sydney and Brisbane converged on Singapore for the final leg of the journey. The alarm stirred us to action at 4 am - this after a midnight finish just tidying up the last details of the trip and the last vestiges of work commitments. Michael arrived early and sorted out the Tetris blocks of luggage and battled the bumper to bumper freeway traffic. Despite hobbling with a broken toe he did look after us very well and delivered us in plenty of time.It was ... read more

Geo: -27.4676, 153.028Not too keen to jump out of bed but we did! Had to work the magic to get everything back into the luggage ready for the flight home.Rundle Mall welcomed us at just after 10 am and with luggage safely deposited with the Concierge we did a little stroll around the Mall. It was magnificent even under grey skies threatening rain. Sprawling wide "street", lots of statutes, a quirky combination of old and new, all the sparkling glassy regulars (Pandora, Swarovski, Apple Store), people strolling at a leisurely pace - but none of the shops were open. Apparently we were a little early for a Sunday morning because Adelaide city doesn't open until 11.Adelaide Arcade was calling us anyway. It was beautiful and ornate and there was a steady stream of early birds heading ... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6Saturday and it's RACEDAY. Macca's office is closed but it doesn't mean that we can't still enjoy a bit of giddy-up at the track.Lucky we made it though because these wearied travellers did not stir until after 9 am! What a sleep in. Think Mac will revert to his old habits as soon as we get home! And the late start is not the only difference, Breakfast was minimalist. I managed to find an apple on the run and Mac called in to Hudsons Coffee for a flat white and a muffin. But we were out and about and looking for the tram around midday. Stopped off at Haigh's chocolate shop and indulged in a carefully selected purchase of 6 little squares that set us back $13.20! Must be top shelf!Secured an all day tram ... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6Clickety clack, clickety clack, the gentle rhythm of The Ghan had us beat and we missed the sunrise completely this morning and woke to sunshine streaming in the window as lakes and green farm fields whipped by the trainA totally different landscape as we approach Adelaide and we actually saw people and homes, roads and railway crossings. Wouldn't want to be queued up waiting for The Ghan though, so many carriages and sometimes travelling at a snail's pace.Brunch was a leisurely affair and Mac opted for the works again but I settled for a salmon frittata. Another winner....and another one I am going to try in our kitchen. The rest of the morning was enjoyed back in the room marvelling at the views from the window. Watched the ocean roll in at Port Augusta, saw ... read more

Geo: -25.2505, 131.008The day was bookended by sun shots from the bus. We were on the coach for a magnificent pink that heralded dawn and we were still on the bus at 6.15 pm as the golds and yellows perfectly silhouetted the mountains. The day started with a very UNwelcomed alarm at 3.30 am. A shower, last minute massaging of the packing and we were ready for Caroline to collect us in the buggy. It was almost a double blessing that we were cocooned in darkness and still in a sleepy stupor because saying farewell to all that is Longitude 131 is a little hard. But move on we must! Our last drive down the private road and a hug of goodbye and we were back to the real world of AATKings and 54 other passengers. Caroline and ... read more

Geo: -25.2505, 131.008The day after the night before. What a luxury to sleep in. We set the alarm for 9.45 as an emergency backup so we wouldn't miss our helicopter flight - but didn't need it. At 6.45 am we co-ordinated the doors, blinds and screens so we had the sweeping view of the sunrise from the luxury of our plumped goose down pillows. A drop of the hair-of-the-dog would have been appropriate this morning but we settled for tap water instead and watched the ever changing light dance and play over Uluru. Again, the addition of the clouds makes the scene more dynamic. The clouds cast a shadow on the rock as they passed overhead and our now old friend Uluru never looks the same twice. This is the first morning for us in the Dune ... read more
