Tuesday has to go down as one of the most exciting days of the year/my trip so far, and it all occurred before 9am, well and then after lunch again! I had a FANTASTIC talk on skype with Leonnie for over an hour – catching up on life and her Zimbabwe trip, it was just so lovely to talk to her. Following this Heidi popped online and asked me if I would like to be her bridesmaid…….errrr YES PLEASE! And then one of the ladies at work from Milton Keynes emailed me a picture of the electric car charging points – the project we had been working on for over a year, the grant had finally come through and they had been installed. It’s so great to hear the work and effort I put in is ... read more

This week has passed in a bit of a blur, with work finished I thought I would find myself bored…..how wrong I was. Monday was a more quiet day, after getting home from Byron after midnight and being up for swim training at 4.45am I allowed myself a sorting out and dozing day. Cleaning the tent shell to remove the bush turkey poo that is had accumulated rather a lot of on the trip, thanks to the bush turkey sitting in the tree above our camp! Also, starting to seriously plan and think about New Zealand.... read more

In true camping style I woke up having had limited sleep, nether the less I still love it. I decided to continue the camping early morning swim tradition, so went for a dip in the sea before tucking into some fruit for breakfast and packing up the camp. All sorted we headed to ‘secret beach’ a beach which was one of those seen from the broken head lookout from yesterday. The drive to the area had been washed away in the floods last year and was littered with truly massive potholes, and angled rather funnily in places. Once parked we headed on foot along the designated path to the beach - I had been warned it to watch my footings on the path as it was quite narrow and very close the cliff edge! This was ... read more

I was picked up at 8am, the car already loaded with boards, tent, sleeping bags and very importantly….the esky (cool box). We stopped at Rainbow beach for a quick surf. When we got in the waves were a little larger and messier than it looked from the car, and it took a while for us to get out back (behind where the waves brake), so I got battered by the breaking waves for a short while, but soon made it out. I thought I would be nervous as it has been a few years and the standard of surfing is just a different level to home, but I wasn’t. It certainly helped to have people I knew and who can surf around me though! After a few years and a couple of good waves later we ... read more

Despite the late night/early morning I still made swim training at 5.30am and managed to stay awake and alert all day because of it. Convinced talk of the camping trip last night was just ‘hot air’ chatter, I was surprised when Jae asked if I was still up for the trip. After clearing it with Rowena this morning just in case, I knew I was…..so camping was on! I spent the whole day like a rather excited child but ploughing on with my grasses work and making a rather comprehensive flow diagram to accompany all the information and fact sheets I had compiled. In the afternoon I presented to Luke all my work on the grassland and he was very pleased with all my work on it, apparently exceeding his expectations, so it obviously was well ... read more

I am feeling rather achy this morning after yesterday’s yoga. Today I am working on writing up the notes from several waste audits that Jae has been doing at one of the landfill sites over the last few days. Matching up the docket notes from the trucks coming in to the arrival times was a bit of a jigsaw but between Jae and myself we managed it. Luckily the lady in charge of providing the docket information at the landfill had kept the dockets for the different days separate else that could have proved a rather large puzzle! This evening was the launch of street food in Brisbane, with lots of fresh homemade food stalls and live music. Jae and some friends were going and he invited Rowena, Matt and myself along. Rowena didn’t fancy going, ... read more

For the rest of this week Matt had to go into the army base to finish up after being away, so I couldn’t make swim training. I missed it rather and running instead wasn’t quite the same. Makes me realise just how lucky I am with Rowena and Matt letting me borrow the car in the first place! Continued ploughing into my grass work, mixed in with other little tasks here and there as well. This evening I went to double yoga. The first class was good as normal but the second class was amazing. It was a cover teacher taking the class and there was only one other lady besides myself in the class. It rather intense, we must have covered a record amount of movements in the class but being just the two of ... read more

Today I was working on a grasslands project I have been given. Researching and pulling information together about the different a) native and b) commercial grass species that are grown in the different bioregions on Queensland. This is proving quite a challenge, and drawing information from lots of different sources and trying to piece it together with my own knowledge to understand how it all fits. I really got stuck into this today and starting to make some head way, I found the best way to tackle it was to ascertain the climate, geology, rainfall, and sediment types for each of the 12 bioregions first, then research the grass species – native and commercial, then match the grass species habitat and conditions to the correct bioregion – then do some research to make sure its correct. ... read more

Today is the start of my last week at work, and continued as normal. Swim training was good, at work I am working on notes for a prelodgement agreement meeting – a meeting with the environment agency about a mine site before the application goes in – trying to iron out any problems before submission. It was nice to work on and be exposed to yet another type of document. Yoga this evening was good but rather challenging!... read more

This morning I managed to lay in until 8am….late for here and much needed! Once Rowena was up we headed off to the Gold Coast, about a 50min drive to the beach at Kurrawa. The beach was lovely, white sand but the quite strong waves. We suncreamed up and settled down on the beach for a few hours, reading and snoozing. Around 12 we headed into the surf club for lunch, where I had a very yummy Asian prawn salad. I love the fish salads they do at the surf clubs; they are the best I have come across. After lunch we wondered round the market stalls selling lovely homemade things, then headed back to the beach for a few hours, finishing up braving the waves before heading home. The current was strong and the parents ... read more
