Asia September 26th 2011

Arriving in Bangkok I had decided I would stay in the Siam Square area. This meant I to first take the airport shuttle bus to the public bus station, from there a minibus to OnNut then two sky trains! It too a lot longer than I thought, I eventually arrive around ten. There was about half a dozen hotels on one small street but still the cheap ones had gone and the others didn't have single rooms left so I ended up treating myself for two nights. That will teach me to not arrive late without a booking. After trying out some is Thailand famous street food I relaxed and decided what I wanted to do in Bangkok. In the morning I got up early and the shower was really hot, not just warm hot but ... read more

What a mission to leave the Nuts Huts! I had the choice of climbing a couple of hundred steps then the 15minute walk to the road with my bags or taking the boat across the river for 10pesos and walking the 1.5km into Loboc and taking the bus from there. I chose the boat and the 1.5km walk as that meant i could stop in Loboc and buy some of the delicious sponge/coconut hot sugar cakes that i discovered the other day when i visited and in the end it always comes down to the food! I was then able to easily catch the bus going to Tagbilaran, although it was abit squashed on the bus it was only for 40mins so it wasnt too bad, the driver wasnt crazy like most Philippino drivers and ... read more

I took the 730 boat from Dumaguete to Tagbilaran on Bohol, then after taking a habal-habal to the jeepney station I caught a jeepney to Nuts Huts. Not sure where I wanted to get off I was hoping the guy I paid would let me know but he fell asleep so after passing the sign I told the lady next to me and the bus stopped not too far down the road. It was then a 20 min walk from the road through the forest and down about 50 steps. After checking in it was off down another 50 or so steps to the dorm room. Wow these steps were going to kill me! After getting lunch from the street side stall I took the bus to the chocolate hills where the moment I stepped off ... read more

I stayed at Harolds Pension which is probably the best place I've stayed at in the Philippines and the cheapest after initially only going to say for three nights I changed my mind to five as there is loads to do here, including awesome diving at Apo Island and the worlds best muck diving. The first afternoon I had a walk around the town and the waterfront. Then the hostel was having a BBQ night so at 6pm they took us to the market to buy whatever we wanted I had some fresh tuna with egg plant and pumpkin. Then they seasoned it for us and cooked it, I ate too much but it was delicious. I met everyone else staying at the hostel and we spent the evening sat on the roof top restaurant ... read more

My boat to Iloilo didn't leave until 3pm so I got up and headed for the shops in search of trousers seems my skirt, my one pair of shorts and my one pair of trousers all had permanent egg stains on them. Two pairs and six dollars later I was happy so went to book my boat ticket. On the schedule it didn't tell you when the boat arrived but need not worry I figured it would probably arrive some time the next day late arvo. In actual fact after 17hrs on the boat I thought it would be a good idea to find out when it would be arriving. The following day, early morning I told. Opps my bad two nights on the boat! And it was so hot in economy, there were about ... read more

Arriving in Puerto I took a tricycle the 12km to Banwa Pension, a funky arty hostel downtown. Close to the hostel there was only a small street that offered a bit of food and things. But it did have a bakery on it with some nice fresh cheese bread and things, it was so good to have fresh bread after so many months even if it was white. I booked to go to the underground river the next day. A contender in the new 7 natural wonders of the world. I spent the next two nights in the mens dorm as there was no room in the ladies the first night and I couldn't be bothered to move the second. The next morning I had been told I would get picked up between 8 and ... read more

Waking up I had no idea whether the boat would be leaving to go to El Nido or not it is one of the most dangerous boat trips in the Philippines and often canceled due to bad weather and we had had a whole night of rain and it was still raining. After asking at the reception I found out it was fifty fifty chance. So I packed my stuff, went out to buy food and crossed my fingers. While out buying food I bumped into one of the captions who told me the boat would be leaving at 9am whoo! Sat waiting in the restaurant area to be told which boat or any info really the caption came in about 915 saying we needed to get on the boat as they wanted to leave, ... read more

After the storm had passed I headed off to discover what the town had to offer. Its amazing you don't get 'hello mister' a million times as you walk down the street. Its a nice little town with a great walkway and seating area around the sea and some beautiful views. I booked to go diving to a sunken oil tanker and skelton wreck the following day, there are literally hundreds of wrecks around the area, many not yet discovered. For dinner it was noodles even though there is a wide range of western food here I still choose the rice and noodles you don't have expectations of them as much as western food and western food never seems to be quite how you expected it to be. My day trip diving was a long ... read more

I arrived into Clark airport just after 8pm and with only carry-on luggage I was quickly able to get through customs and immigration (it helped that most people on the flight were Philippino and there was a separate cue for foreigners). I was then able to get some money and book a bus to Manila. The bus eventually departed just after 9 and arrived in Pasay about 1130. I had booked to stay at Green Mango Inn, taxi drivers refused to put the meter on all saying no metered taxis at night and after initially been told 500pesos I paid 300p and the taxi driver still got lost! In the end I arrived about 1230 and after been shown the dorm room the staff had to clean it, even-though it was a six bed dorm ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Bukit Batok September 3rd 2011

Arriving in Singapore I wanted to make my way quickly to Central Quay to meet up with my uncle for dinner, so after taking a taxi and having a few minor problems contacting him we eventually headed out. But there was choice! Too much choice! After not having to make a decision over food for so long and even when you did make a choice it was rice or noodle's, fried or not, been in Singapore was strange. In the end I had steak with sticky date pudding for desert mmm. After picking up my new camera and organising some photos and music it was time to say goodbye and go find somewhere to sleep. Been in Singapore made me feel closer to England and far away from Indonesia and countries that feel much more ... read more
