Gorgeous Photos and Well Written and Informative Text I very much enjoyed this blog entry....It was like a mini-tour of Gaudi's structures in Barcelona plus useful travel tips on getting there from France, etc.
Other opportunities in that region Sandy & Jerry,
I have very good friend from Toulouse and he sent me some secrets of the region, fyi. It appears that the links did not pass through but you can type them in. Any difficulty, I can email the message to another email address. Enjoy, dj
Hi Doug:
Great travel blog entry. I like the "Bringing in the heat" pict but the prize goes to "My Peer Group". Awesome and so truthful for the region.
My recommendations (all can be found via Google maps).
The obvious ones:
- Carcassonne (fortified medieval city)
- Toulouse (the pink city)
Less obvious:
- Albi (fortified cathedral, great segue into the history of Catholic conflicts between the Albigeois/Cathars and the Roman Catholic church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albi_Cathedral). This building is a great symbol of this period (folks in the region still speak daily of these conflicts, this is a must-know) and is famous for being the largest brick building in the world.
- Montauban: great city of Art and History, includes a Museum to Ingres and Bourdelle, both famous French artists and sculptors (http://www.france-voyage.com/travel-guide/montauban-1651.htm)
Even less obvious:
- Saint Antonin Noble Val: 8th Century Benedictine Abbey, medieval town registered by Unesco. (http://www.france-voyage.com/travel-guide/saint-antonin-noble-val-1656.htm).
- Caylus: fortified church, great architecture, small town (http://www.france-voyage.com/travel-guide/caylus-1662.htm).
- Drive thought the Gorges de l'Aveyron (http://www.france-voyage.com/travel-guide/aveyron-gorges-1653.htm). Super-scenic.
A personal favorite, but quite a bit out of the way. However, staying for a while, I would not miss the very unique Dali museum in Figueres (Spain): https://www.salvador-dali.org/museus/figueres/fr_index.html. And it is only 2 hours from St Chinian...
Hope this helps.
Arnaud
Thanks for update Congrats on the blog, it is wonderful. I love the stories, humor, and learnings, thanks for the blatant tourist honesty. Jerry, how is the beer? Happy trails,
I think I am getting the hang of this. Thanks for your help MJ. I don't think the web site is really very easy to navigate if you don't know where to start. Are you getting all of the blog entries from us? I think there are 4 so far.

We are two "sort-of" grownups that have decided to leave our workaday world for a "gap year" in Europe. We would like to experience the daily life in another culture and better understand it's people. We are starting out in rural France and at this point our next stops are still open. ... full info
