Follow that Road Must be great to tackle your French Alps Jeremy as a relaxing sojourn from tackling the frenetic streets of Beijing. By the way, do you bicycle in Beijing? I have heard they were trying to ban electric bikes but what about the pedal variety?
Cycling those roads Thanks for the message, Dancing Dave! Cycling the Alps was sensational! I can't wait to go again! I do cycle in Beijing, and it's actually one the best places to do so in China, as there are tons of cylcing lanes everywhere. I lived in Fuzhou for 7 years, and cycled every day there, but it was a bit risky! Beijing is so big, so spread-out, it can take a while to cycle from one place to another, and when it's polluted, it aren't pleasant! But I'd rather cycle than take the bus or subway...
Sacred footprint Whether it be where Buddha stepped off Earth to head into Paradise or where Adam stepped onto Earth after being expelled from Paradise (Heaven), there are now the footprints of your Dad and yourself (as well as a zillion others) at the top of this revered peak. Pretty clear you really had no difficult decision, Jeremy...you had to do it!!!
East Coast loveliness I love your photos! You have captured the quietly confident spirit of the east that we experienced too. It's hard to believe that a savage war raged in these parts just a few years ago. Safe travels!
p.s. your cricket bowling action needs a bit of work ;)
Welcome back Jeremy! Good to see you blogging again. Looking at the date of this blog, it looks like we were in Sri Lanka at the same time. Looking forward to seeing how your SL trip itinerary panned out! :)
it's been a long time Thanks for remembering me. A lot has happened over the last 2 years. I spent the last 15 months traveling, mostly on my bicycle (Portugal-Spain-France-Tanzania-Madagascar-India-Indonesia...) Lots of blogs to write!
places everywhere there is jewels like this, but then we generalize with the country level and then.. Brazil seems so much nicer than China.. i never been to any of this countries, just theoretical impressions :)
Beaches and waterfalls! That area of southern Brazil is so perfect! I spent a couple of weeks in nearby Paraty, doing exactly what you were doing--what a paradise! Congratulations on the having the beachside "campground" all to yourselves. I bet you could hear the ocean better than those in the fancy hotels. Well-done!
Inner Mongolia I've only ever seen it in winter and it ain't anything but icy & cold. But your pics show its grass, grass and more grass. No wonder you lay down for a nap.
"Life couldn't be much better." How amazing that such a tranquil, beautiful area lies just an 8-hour, gorgeous drive out of crazy Beijing. Brilliant of your school to bond you all together in such a lovely setting. I imagine many of your city colleagues had never been in such a rural setting. I'm with you and love walking the fields and mountains outside of cities. Lately, I've been taking natives from Arequipa, Peru, on my walks--they're shocked that such beauty lies so close. We walkers are the lucky ones.
Good post I read this right before I went to Jinan for a few days and it was really helpful. The hutongs off of Furong Jie were quite interesting as you mentioned.
Salut Sacré Jérémy ! où que tu sois, tu trouves toujours des plages de rêve... et des jolies filles ! ;)
merci pour tes nouvelles, c'est toujours un plaisir de te lire,

What a scene! You have such a great attitude toward what might be, for me, massive overload. How great that you were able to enjoy the constant circus and also get out by yourselves on the beaches and mountain! Best wishes for another longish holiday, and Happy New Year!
Happy Year of the Ram, Tara! It's always nice to hear from you. How have you been? Certain beaches were super crowded in Hainan but I knew they would be. We managed to get away from it all. It was sunny, it was warm, we ate well, we had ice cream and tons of fruit every day, I got to practice my Chinese every day and see Becky finally relax... Life was great in Hainan!
amazing beaches and ..Jeremy's father because he can keep up Jeremy ! Another interesting thing i read first time about - showering with the sand.. i heard of soaping up and washing with sea water possible, but sand, must be something desert people do.. Fantastic beaches, really worth visiting, not by bike for me! But from pics i didnt see possibility for snorkeling in Itacare.
thank you! Waves might be too strong to snorkel... but I'm really not sure. I spend more time on the beach than in the water. Yes, my Dad is an animal who likes to push his limits physically.
I am a 36-year old language teacher, currently working in Beijing. I was born in France but China has been my home for many years. I taught French and English in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, for 6 years. I never thought I would stay in China for such a long time but it’s been an amazing experience! Professionally speaking, teaching Chinese students is extremely rewarding. They are so hard-working and eager to learn new things. And then China… there aren’t enough words to describe this intricate (hence fascinating) country.
