Roads of New Zealand
Yes that wiggly thing is a road and they have no shortage of those. That is why it takes twice as long to get any place as you think it will. But that is ok because it is so beautiful that you want to go slowly anyway.

truely wonderfully tale of woe
You write so well of your misadventure. (It brings to mind my late excursion into wretchedness, although of an entirely different sort: the Indian Consulate for Foreigners where all I needed to obtain was an Exit Visa for my flight home that night. ) Thanks for the read!
5th July 2014

Ohhh that sounds worse. I'll take the icey cold lake over the Indian Consulate any time.

You should have taken a cruise :)
May in Fiordland might not be winter yet but as there are glaciers around and it gets about 4 metres of rain a year! I'm sure that you will look back and laugh (one day). Thanks for the entertaining blog. It made me read it all the way through :) Next time take a cruise with us at www.cruisemilfordnz.com

Muffin-worthy indeed!
Your ending genuinely had me laughing aloud. I cannot tell you the number of time this sentiment - "partly because I'm stubborn, partly because I knew I would have to write about it in this blog" - has landed us, as well, in the most ridiculous of circumstances. But those always make for the best stories later. :)
5th July 2014

Haha thanks, I'm glad it's not just me that thinks like that!

Ouch
Holiday injuries are painful. Wow what a story. Unrelenting weather....and then the freaking rainbows. As you say, unbelievable. Isn't this supposed to be fun? Love your stories.
5th July 2014

Thank you :) When ever anything goes wrong, I comfort myself by thinking "oh well, at least other people will enjoy laughing at me when I write about this in my blog".

Inexperienced riders
From time to time we decide to get on a horse while on vacation and always wonder why once it is over. We are inexperienced riders and horses have a mind of their own. Sounds like a great trip. The misty mountains look amazing.

I really enjoyed reading this post...
and very much liked your writing style, it was all described with a lot of humor. You certainly worked hard for this experience, so at least you know it'll be a memorable one. Cheers.

Thank you! I really like the quote you have on your profile page - "The most dangerous risk of all - The risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later". Where is that from?

I suppose multiple uses of the F word is appropriate in this case...
and your muffin was the right choice despite causing Mark some anxiety.
5th July 2014

Yes I have to learn to swear less, sorry! You're not the first person that's mentioned that. I started off just writing this for my Facebook friends, I forget that grownups read it now!

Hard and bleak!
That's about the worst story I've ever heard about magical (not) NZ. I'm also a fan of traveling during the off-season to avoid crowds and high prices, but it sounds as if you paid too-high a price. Rescue--oh, yes! Glad you and your toes made it out alive.
5th July 2014

I'd still recommend New Zealand in the off season, I just needed to take the hint that some activities are better left for summertime! Mildford Sound managed to be bleak and beautiful at the same time :)
29th June 2014

Um...LMAO!
Laughing at you..er with you..sorry! Your blog had me in stitches...i think I used the phrase New Zealand youve got to be shitting me too somewhere on a horses bum. Pic 1 speaks a thousand words. Really loving your blogs :)

"ALMOND WANKERS"
Now that could be an arse tattoo...just to see their expression when you're mooning them!

Small acts of kindness and love
Great scenery, which in my opinion, was the best part of the Rings (I'm a 3 on your scale, and filed my nails during the fight scenes). And wow--those Misty Mountains do indeed look misty--very evocative of dragons and such. Glad the horses showed you small acts of kindness and love and didn't throw you to the ground. Next up--elf city?

My kinda blog l)
I really loved this blog...having done the horse riding and wtf roads thing in NZ - love your final paragraph, thanks!

Welcome to the south side...
It sounds like you are enjoying your time over here, looking forward to your blogs on Australia. Congratulations on the Hall of Fame award! :)
28th May 2014

I third that!
I agree with Bob and Rachael. I have enjoyed reading your blogs. Are you working on the Central Coast? Sylvia and I live at Budgewoi. Maybe we could all meet up. Good excuse for another TravelBlog get-together. Here is a link to Rachael's description of the last one: http://www.travelblog.org/Oceania/Australia/New-South-Wales/Sydney/Darling-Harbour/blog-797528.html

Hall of Fame
I too have been an avid reader and love reading your blogs, so think the HoF nomination was well deserved. I'm glad Bob nominated you! And as Bob suggests, please get in touch, it would be great to meet up before you move back to London. I haven't done the bush trek with Dave and Denise yet, but I'm up for it for sure!
26th May 2014

I nominated you for the HoF because of...
your delightfully humorous writing style as exemplified by this blog. I do hope that you are motivated to finish blogging your Africa trip and every trip since. Starting with NZ is a great place to restart your blogs. We loved Queenstown when we were there in Oct 2012 for our 40th anniversary...a clue to why we didn't participate in any adventure activities, much less the bar scene. And once you return to London, please write about life there. Before you leave Sydney, you have to look up Dancing Dave and his wonderful wife Denise and RJT (Rachel Trotter) who are the embodiment of the TB family. You have to do a bush trek with them.
