Pucon is a small town located on the edge of lake Villarica. It is a also a good base for a spot of adventure sports, trekking & volcano climbing! How I got there: A Pullman bus from Santiago (Terminal Sur) to Pucon 10hrs - 12,000 Pesos semi-cama. You get given a blanket & pillow & a small snack in the morning. Where I stayed: El Refugio hostel, it is located on Palquin street practically opposite the Pullman bus terminal. An 8-bed dorm was 8000 Pesos a night. It has washing facilities, wifi (ok for surfing the web), beds comfy but pillow was a bit thin. Good kitchen & showers with hot water (more common in Chile I think) & good pressure. They also organise tours through the hostel for reasonable prices so it's easy to start ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago November 9th 2015

Santiago is the Capital city of Chile and feels so much like a classic "western" city that I almost forgot I was in south America! It's a large city with a mix of old colonial buildings some in better repair than others & modern apartment blocks & high rise buildings. The city has been hit badly by earthquakes in the past but I after the huge earthquake that hit Chile in 2010 (8.9 on the Richter scale) they are pretty well prepared for any earthquake & the small ones barely even register with them. How I got there: I got a transfer from San Pedro to Calama Airport for 10,000 Pesos & a flight from Calama to Santiago landing at approx. 8:30pm. I got a taxi from the airport to my hostel which cost 21,000 Pesos. ... read more

Ok so it was time for my final land crossing as I headed from Bolivia into Chile. The border: Having already completed the forms on the bus as we got to the border we got off the bus & queued with our passports at the Police control. They stamp your white police form & give it back to you (this is your immigration form). Then all the luggage is unloaded and once the doors open you can go into customs control. You place your bags on the table & hand over your customs form which states you aren't bringing any fruit/veg/animals or their related products into the country. You're then asked to unzip your bags (only the main compartments though?!) & they search them. Exit at the opposite end & get back on the bus. Other ... read more

I booked a 3 day tour which included a transfer into San Pedro de Atacama on the last day as my travels were continuing in Chile. I must admit that I only decided to go to Bolivia in order to see the salt flats after repeatedly being told how amazing it was, having not planned on entering the country originally so this tour had a lot to live up to! How I got there: I took the tourist bus from Todo Turismo which took 10 hours to reach Uyuni from La Paz. We arrived in Uyuni at 8:30am as the bus was delayed by a roadblock (common in Bolivia) so we boarded in La Paz at 10:30 instead of 9pm. At the bus terminal we got picked up by someone from Quechua connection & taken to ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz October 30th 2015

I finally left Peru to enter Bolivia via the Border Copacabana. From Puno to the Border: Back on the Bolivia hop bus I was picked up at my hostel at 8.15 & taken to the port in a mini-bus. Once everyone was back on the bus (a double decker '15 plate from Inka express) we headed for the Peru - Bolivia border at Yunguyo near Copacabana. *There are 2 border crossings into Bolivia the other is at Desaguadero but it is considered to be more dangerous for robbery & scams* At the border we got off the bus & removed all our belongings before heading to the Peru immigration office. Here I showed my passport & white immigration card it was checked I hadn't overstayed my welcome & I got my exit stamp. After changing money ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca October 28th 2015

How I got there:So after the success of Peru Hop I decided to go again with the company to do the "Bolivia Hop" from Cusco to La Paz it cost $59. It has stops in Puno & Cococabana before it gets to La Paz. We met at 21:30 outside the Bolivia hop office (about 20m from my hostel!) & they checked us in & photocopied our passports making sure we still had our Peru immigration form from entering the country. Then minibuses took us to the main bus (Cuzco streets are too narrow for it). Once on we headed to Puno & arrived for breakfast at appx 5:45 getting to the port at 6:30. What I did: I was doing a homestay so stayed on the bus waiting for my guide whilst everyone who was doing ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco October 25th 2015

Cuzco was once the capital of the Inca empire and is now the base for trekking to Machu Picchu, the sacred valley or the many archaeological sites around the area. How I got there: I got dropped off by Peru hop at the inka bus station and then taxi'd to the hostel. I arrived at about 6pm. Where I stayed: Pariwana hostel large dorm (10 bed) S/.35 & after the backpackers dorm (14 bed) S/.29. My 1st dorm was on the 3rd floor & I could just about hear music from the ba. After returning from my trek the 1st floor dorm was normally really quiet & I could only hear the music 1 night. The showers were hot, toilets were cleaned eeveryday, bins usually a couple of times. There's activities everyday, TV room, Internet lounge ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu October 20th 2015

I booked onto the 4D/3N Inca Jungle Trek with Inka Time Tours which is located up Calle Triunfo off Plaza de Armas to the right of the cathedral, toward the top of the street. I originally went them as my brother Rich had used them when he came to Peru & I took them being in business after 6yrs as a good sign. I did look around a few other agencies, but the only cheaper ones I found offered you less time in Machu Picchu. The tour cost me $240 for 4D including 3B/L/D, guide, transport, 3N accommodation, Machu Picchu ticket, Train ticket & bus back to Cuzco, biking, rafting & zip-lining. Day 1: My guide for the trek (Gerson or "Geoff") picked me up at my hostel & then collected the others before we got ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon October 14th 2015

Arequipa is Perus 2nd city & is also the most common base for starting treks or tours to the Colca canyon / valley. The city is around 2000m & although I wasn't affected the Dutch group I was travelling with did feel the altitude a bit! How I got there: Still travelling by Peru hop we arrived at 5:30am after our visit to Nazca. As usual we got dropped at the hostel. Where I stayed: Flying dog hostel dorm was S/.25. 1st dorm had shower in the room 2nd had a shared shower. They ran out of hot water the 2nd time I had a shower but the 1st time it was hot. Wifi was ok, didn't work so well on 2nd floor in dorms but fine downstairs in courtyard. Beds comfy & had lockers for ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica October 9th 2015

Huacachina is a desert oasis near to the city of Ica. How I got there: Peru hop 2hrs from Paracas, Pick up & drop off at the hostel. Where I stayed: Casa de arenas, triple room S/.30 - we didn't have much choice of accommodation this night as we arrived on the Thursday of a public holiday which meant the town was packed out as a lot locals from Lima head here for the long weekend. What I did: Dune buggy ride & sandboarding S/.50 Due to the holiday they tried to cut our 2 hour buggy ride to 1hr but Francisco our guide managed to get them up to 1.5hrs if we started at 5pm instead of 4. The dune buggy ride was awesome! It was so much fun I would highly recommend doing it ... read more
