5am. Somone is knocking on the door to my hut. I opened the door to see two large security guards with a clipboard, and just as panic began to rise, one of the guards said, "Wake up call" in that delightful South African accent. Time to get ready for our first drive into the Kruger National Park. (As a side note, I've been here long enough now that I'm starting to talk to myself in a South African accent. Is that wierd? Probably.) I grabbed a pre-made breakfast at the lodge and boarded our new, hopefully improved, bus. Sefapane Lodge is in Phalaborwa, just outside the gates of the Kruger, so it took minutes to enter the park. Our Go Africa Guide, Mark, was at the front, helping us spot animals and identify them, and he ... read more

"A man without culture is like a zebra without stripes" Days 5, 6 and 7 (September 7 - 9) Sunday morning we had free time in Soweto. The parading musicians rounding the neighborhood since before dawn led some students to attend church services, others relaxed at Lebo's, and I joined 7 others on a bicycle tour given by Lebo himself. We learned a bit more about Soweto and had a good time darting through traffic (at least I did-- others weren't so sure.) Lebo is a celebrity in town, so everyone was smiling and waving at us. When the tour was over, it was time to load up the bus and leave Soweto. We gave Lebo and Maria a "Seattle Then & Now" book that we all signed as a thank you and as we pulled ... read more

Soweto, continued... Day 4 Saturday (9/6/08) we had set aside for service opportunities in Soweto. My guest house group was late to meet up with everyone at Lebo's because the van sent to pick us up was in a vehicle accident on the way to get us-- a common occurence in Joburg. When we finally arrived, we set off in two groups on walking tours of the township we were in, called Orlando West. Our group brought donations for the children in the area, so our guide, Philip, told us to bring pens and pencils with us to hand out, but NO toys, as they would cause fighting. The neighborhood kids were the first recipients of our giftts, until Philip asked us to wait to give things out to the kids that really needed them, even ... read more

Sawubona! (hello in Zulu) -- Days 2 though 3 The past few days have brought two extremes-- elite wealth and absolute poverty. Because this is a business-focused UW course, we are visiting multiple companies throughout South Africa, which the students have all studied and prepared for. We added to that knowledge by meeting with a lecturer for the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) to talk about the challenges and opportunities facing South African businesses. This provided a solid base for questions and understanding at our first company visit, to First National Bank in Johannesburg. After a long security check-in process, we werewelcomed with coffee, tea and breakfast items to a stunning board room, complete with padfolios for each of us and a "goodie bag" full of info on the company. FNB executives gave a very ... read more

Ke Bona Lesedi-- "I see the light" Well, it took 24 hours just to get to South Africa, but the flights weren't as bad as I though they'd be. First, I had a 10 hour flight from Seattle to Amsterdam. Knowing we'd arrive in Amsterdam at 7am, I wanted to force myself to sleep on the plane. I was tired, but it was hard to sleep because I was excited and NWA ha 'fantastic seat-back monitors so you can watch whatever movies you want or even play games. Thinking I had a brilliant sleep-plan, I had a glass of wine with the first of 3 meals onboard (next time I wonder why we pay $5 for a box of crackers on domestic flights, this is why-- abundant free meals and drinks on international flights. I even ... read more

It's Go Time! After months of waiting, I'm now finally less than 36 hours away from getting on a flight that will (eventually, after a stop-off in Amsterdam) take me to South Africa! Yes, I am packed already, although I reserve the right to re-pack for fun. I get to go to South Africa with a UW Exploration Seminar-- a one-month study abroad experience that will count as credit towards the students' degrees. As part of the course, we had pre-departure sessions all last week, meaning we were in class, in very hard chairs, from 8:30am-5pm Monday through Thursday. Besides the fact that I haven't had to sit in a classroom desk for years, the week was really informative. We had some amazing guest speakers, watched some interesting movies-- check out Tsotsi sometime!-- ate a delicious ... read more

There's no better reason than a friend's wedding to take a road trip, especially when it means heading to the beach. Jeremy and I battled traffic getting out of Seattle's 90+ degree heat and headed to the much cooler North Oregon Coast for the weekend to attend Meche and Ryan's wedding. The wedding itself was touching and fun, complete with the crowd performing a rousing rendition of "Here Comes The Bride" with kazoos. That's right-- I said kazoos. The coast was covered by a misty fog that made it hard to see a few hundred feet down the sand, but it felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. The reception was just as fantastic-- how can you beat a back-yard barbeque complete with home-made rasberry wine and microbrewed beer in mason jars? Jeremy even ... read more

I can pronounce Sepulveda! Apparently the only vacations I take lately are partly funded by the my employer... not a bad gig if you can get it. This time, after working at a UW off-site orientation in Orange County, California, and getting to see my family in Fountain Valley, I ventured up to LA to hang out on the beach, eat way too much Del Taco (seriously people... it's good bad-for-you food) and visit some friends. I spent the week speeding around in a PT Cruiser, which I am convinced they rent to all the tourists so we are easily identifiable. I kicked off my downtime by purchasing a $10 beach chair, $12 sunglasses and hitting the sand. Of course I got sunburned-- it's what I do when I venture out of rain-soaked Seattle for any ... read more
