I went around Tanzania & Uganda to meet with friends from 2009 & my sponsor child, and to volunteer at an orphanage & a school + medical center... 3000km on African busses, fun. In this time I learned a lot about my friends in Africa, how they struggle with getting by. Note that this section is the longest and involves mainly the stories of people I met. So if that interests you, read on. July 16th - I left home & family for a 4 month solo journey into the unknown with a 60lb backpack & a tent. Only 2 hours before my flight took off I said goodbye to my Vavo for the last time. July 19th - I arrived in Tanzania Africa at 5pm in a city called Dar-es Salam, where a friend named ... read more

I met a man who claims to heal people of their illnesses, whether caused by health issues or demons... Zebediah is a man full of surprises. When I first met him, it was just at the point where I needed a break from Geofrey’s kids. They ran to him and sat on his lap, and next thing I knew he was trying to bite their ears. They were half panicked, half laughing uncontrollably. That night he told me casually that he heals people on a regular basis, and I could come see it for myself anytime. ”I get about 3 or 4 calls per week.” So I rearranged my schedule to spend more time in Geofrey’s home, a 4 minute walk from Zeb’s house. Aug 17: Tonight I came with Zeb to the house of a ... read more

Here’s what it was like climbing up Africa’s highest mountain... The longer version of Ironman that I forgot to train for. In the week leading up to the climb I organized the date of my climb and booked a team of professionals to accompany me. Normally this is done months in advance, and for a much higher cost than the total $1000 it would cost me (Normal prices range from $1500-8000), but because I have African friends, I had some help. Aug 21: I took a bus to meet me tour guide near the mountain. “Guide Richard brotha“, he called himself. He is 50 years old and has climbed Kilimanjaro to the peak 81 times. He helped me get a great discount on the equipment, and get to the entrance of the mountain park quickly. I ... read more

I left civilization behind for 16 days, headed out into the bush of Northern Tanzania, & experienced the life of an african villager in a Masai tribe, including rituals, eating habits, work, and a ceremony I‘ll never forget. People in Isaya’s boma: Isaya – my host, a 29 year old male Masai warrior. Somebeti: Isaya’s mom, age 63. Ndukai: Isaya’s dad, 70. 2 other couples, and 5 children. I have to admit, I was a little anxious about this at first. In my head I had formed images of what the village might look like – a group of 30-50 houses & a community of people living next to eachother. Would they be friendly & open to my presence? Would I be safe at night in my tent? Or would they plan to rob me? I ... read more

What I did in India when I wasnt volunteering - I made friends and explored the territory of Kolkata. Sept 19: As my plane neared Kolkata airport‘s runway, I felt thankful for the oppotunity to touch Indian ground. When we exited the plane I was smeared with a wave of hot, humid air. It looked like a very green land, but densely populated. Any area that wasnt touched by roads & concrete buildings was packed full of banana trees it seemed. I had to give a false address to get past immigration, and then took a taxi that charged me $20 for 45 minutes – 5x the true value of the ride, but busses were on strike. Great. I took a subway for the remainder of the ride to Rabindra Sadan Station, and it was a ... read more

I came to Kolkata, India to see its culture & volunteer in some of the most humble conditions I could think of – alongside the Sisters of Mother Teresa’s “Missionaries of Charity,'' taking care of the sick & dying. At the Motherhouse, where Mother Teresa’s tomb lies, I recieved my orientation package and met the new volunteers. Everybody just shows up at 3pm without reserving a spot or even contacting the sisters first. Volunteering would start on Friday. On mz first day, I showed up at the Motherhouse at 7:00am with a group of 60-80 volunteers. We had tea, sang & prayed, and left in groups to our specific locations. I chose “Nirmal Hriday'', the place where Mother Teresa herself started doing her work, where she founded her worldwide organization “Missionaries of Charity.'' I want to ... read more

I came to China with only one major purpose: to study Tai Chi & Qi Gong with a competent master with the hopes of understanding the basics enough to continue practicing at home on my own for some years. Its said that after years of study, the benefits include a highly focused concentration, improved health & healing of joints, cured diseases, & cancers, greater physiological control such as emotional calmness & some control of involuntary body functions (heartrate, body heat, blood flow), and an awareness of the energy in ones body, aka “the cultivation of Chi,'' which leads to an inner power above normal human capability. I plan to test this for myself. It took 4 flights to get from Kolkata to Beijing. I still love lifting off & returning to ground, and have somehow sat ... read more
