Asia » Philippines » Ilocos April 20th 2009

April 20-22, 2009. Describing this as my first solo trip is only partially true. I did ride a plane to Laoag all by my lonesome and rode a bus back to Manila by myself, but in between, I was with my cousins, an uncle, and an aunt... plus a relative of a cousin from her mother's side who was in town for an ocular inspection of the Ilocos Region. It was my third trip to the Marcos country (dubbed as such because support for the former president is still widespread here) but it was the first time I had a DSLR. We based ourselves in Laoag, the capital of Ilocos Norte, then went south to Vigan exploring the Mestizo District, a UNESCO-listed site where Spanish-era houses and roads have been miraculously spared from the WWII, allowing ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Luzon » Zambales April 10th 2009

After spending Maundy Thursday at a resort in Olongapo, the family and several cousins headed to the small fishing village of Pundaquit in Zambales on Good Friday 2009. Typical of a Filipino Holy weekend, hordes of city dwellers have trooped the beach (which can be reached via pump boat), making it a little too crowded. But take a few steps away from the crowd and it's hiking in the woods that seem to have popped out of a fairy tale book. Or a few more pesos for another boat ride and you're off to relatively more secluded islands for swimming and hill-climbing. That is, if you can bear the summer heat.... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Coron January 3rd 2009

Widely considered as the Philippines’ final frontier, Palawan could very much be the microcosm of the whole country. It packs so much in such a narrow strip of land everything the Philippines has to offer but has relatively less tourists, thereby making it easier to have an off-the-beaten-track feeling. On the northernmost tip of Palawan is the Calamian Archipelago, where Busuanga Island - its largest island - is located. Famed for its superb wreck diving sites, Busuanga also boasts of picturesque sceneries, good swimming, and worthwhile hiking trips for a fun-filled weekend. We had our two-day Coron-Calauit trip on November 1-2 this year, departing Manila in the afternoon of October 31 via Super Ferry. (Super Ferry departs Manila every Friday on the way to Puerto Princesa and stops at Coron Saturday morning before leaving for the ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City October 7th 2008

Oct 7-10 2008. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) - Cu Chi - My Tho - Ben Tre. If there was one thing I really (REAAAAAAAAAAAALLY) regretted about this trip, it was that it was too short. With four days on hand, much of our activity focused on Ho Chi Minh City and nearby areas. We didn't even get to visit the Reunification Palace. Bummer. We did get our knees dirty in the Cu Chi Tunnels, though, and got coconut fatigue in the Mekong Delta Region. And we also had pho - lots of pho - in many of them streetside stalls. Still, when one considers a return trip, there's no way to go but up (think Hoi An, Hue, and Hanoi).... read more

Asia » China August 9th 2007

August 9-14, 2007. Hongkong-Shenzhen-Shanghai-Beijing-Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong. The largest Asian country is also the world's fastest emerging economy. China is rapidly trading on a glorious past to keep up with the ever-changing world. And the key word here is "rapid," as admittedly, a six-day tour of this mammoth nation is, to put it in an understatement, too little of a time. But that's enough to scratch China's surface, hitting the most accessible sights, such as the Forbidden City, Great Wall in Badaling, and the Lama Temple in Beijing; and the Bund in Shanghai. At least there's more reason to return for Yunnan, Sichuan, Tibet, and so on.... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Pattaya May 16th 2006

May 16-20, 2006. Bangkok-Pattaya-Bangkok. The trip that jumpstarted my wanderlust, the four-day sojourn in Thailand was made possible by a regional conference in Pattaya that the KMBI was participating. Since my mom was part of the organization and my dad usually tags along in such trips, they were nice enough to tag their little ones along for some Southeast Asian fun. Unfortunately, an upset stomach and an unexpected drumming stint kept me in the hotel for most of two days. That didn't dampen the newfound zest I had for traveling. Only a few pictures herein as most other prints have been lost. This trip was before I laid my antique film SLR to rest.... read more
