Hi Everyone
Rick and I and the kids are leaving for South Africa December 16th. We are flying Swiss Air to Zurich, we have a 7 hour layover and then we fly Swiss Air to Johannesbur, arriving on the morning of December 18th. We have four days in Johannesburg, three days in Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, 9 days in Cape Town, a four day private Garden Route tour, back to Cape Town for one night, back to Johannesburg for one night and then home January 8th. I have not been back in 15 years and my family have never been and we are all SO excited.

Hi everybody I'm behind again, as usual but it's not so easy to get hold of a computer or of internet. We only have one adapter that works for all our chargers and we have to charge two cell phones, two computers, two cameras, a video camera, two Nintendo DS's and other stuff!!! Anyway.....yesterday was my worst day of vacation but probably Rick and the kids's best! There has been some kind of stomach bug floating around and I was the lucky recipient yesterday. The night before, Taylor had snapped off one half of her fence appliance in her mouth (at 8:30pm) and I spent two hours trying to find a dentist so she wouldn't be stabbed by the razor sharp piece of wire that was left protruding. Trying to find a dentist at 8:30pm in ... read more

Hi all Well I'm behind three days but instead of doing each day I'm going to do a recap. Firstly, Happy New Year to all of you. We had a dinner at the hotel and then incredible fireworks, but Ryan and Jake fell asleep at 11pm. Rick, Taylor and Jordan fell asleep around 12pm. I of course am still up even though it's 2am - Yikes! December 29th was an uneventful day. We have been running around like maniacs, so the kids (and Rick) were tired and just wanted to relax. We hung around the hotel most of the day and then Rick and I went out to dinner with Russell and Toni. Just before we left, Jordan was hysterically crying because he had diarrhea and terrible cramps. I gave him some anti spasm medicine that ... read more

This morning Andy and Ivor came to our hotel at around 8:15am and we went with them for a walk to Camps Bay, about a half hour walk. We had breakfast in Camps Bay overlooking the ocean and then walked back. We rounded up the kids and then went to pick Andy and Ivor up and drove to Boulder's Beach. On the way we passed Muizenberg Beach (pronounced Mewsenberg) where I went for a holiday when I was five. It's the most gorgeous beach with multi colored huts which you can rent and use for the day. They aren't too big and serve mostly as changing rooms. Here in South Africa, most of the beaches have people who rent out chairs and umbrellas. So when you go on the beach, you tell the guys how many ... read more

Hi all Today started off with my favorite pastime....shopping! Russell took Toni and I to the Waterfront to drop us off so we could go shopping. The V & A Waterfront is magnificent to say the least. It is a thriving and bustling working harbor but it is all new and is absolutely spectacular. It has the hugest mall ever as well as so many outdoor curio shops and tons of activities for the kids. We started off in the mall where I bought lots of gifts. Shoes and clothing are actually more expensive than in the States. Even though there is seven and a half rand for every one dollar, everything is more expensive. For example, Havianas are around $12 or $16 for the plain ones in the States, but here, after I convert rands ... read more

Hi friends Well, I didn't go to bed 'til late (surprise) so when Rick asked me if I wanted to go walking this morning, I mumbled emphatically....NO! He informed me that he had been up since five am because we are next to the service elevator and he heard it clunking since 5am. Needless to say, when the hotel manager comes back on Monday at 8am, I will be standing at the front desk ready to inform her of the fact that since I booked in January of 09, I resent the fact that we are next to the service elevator and that the kid's room is not next to hours and that people who booked later, as little as three weeks ago, got a better room than us. G-d forbid I wouldn't have some beef ... read more

Rick and I woke up at around 6am. We finished packing and cleaning up and Rick went to the kid's room to finish packing for them. We had told them to pack the night before, but you can only imagine how they pack. Basically they do the gather and stuff method. Went to reception at 7:30 and Darren and Phios (our guide and tracker) as well as a lot of the staff, were waiting to say goodbye. Gary (our lunatic shuttle driver) was there already. We went onto the deck to have a last look at the bush and a troupe of baboons were in the trees making screaming noises. Probably 'cos they were sad we were leaving. We also saw a warthog down below, one of the ugliest animals on the planet. So sadly we ... read more

So we were woken again at 5:30am. At this point, the kids were really tired, but they got up like troopers. Had a quick snack and off we went at 6:30am. The days are so long out here in the bush, because you get up so early. 5 minutes into our drive, we came across a troupe of baboons. There were a few of them and so amazing to watch. They are so human like. There was one baby in the troupe and when it saw us, it ran up to it's mom and she picked it up and put it on her back. Our guide told us that the animals are used to the trucks and won't attack, but if we get out they will get very aggressive. Needless to say, none of us put ... read more

Hi everyone After my little nap this afternoon, we met and had tea in the lodge and then left for our afternoon game drive. We were informed by our ranger, Darren, that there had been an elephant kill (by another elephant) in a neighboring park and the main pride of 15 lions that roamed our park had gone to have themselves a feast and unfortunately wouldn't be gracing us with their presence for at least a week. So unfortunately the chances of us seeing lions is slim and none. This is definitely a little disappointing, but such is life. We did however have a very successful afternoon. We came across a herd of about six rhinos, including a baby which was super cute, or at least as cute as a 500 pound animal could be. We ... read more

Good morning everyone We were woken this morning at 5:30 for our morning drive. We went and had tea, juice and muffins and then left at 6am. It was so beautiful outside and we had a very successful drive. We say Impala, Wildebeast, a HUGE Rhino and the best of all....a leopard. Halfway through we stopped for tea, coffee, juice and rusks and then continued on. We got back to the lodge at around 9am and went for a scrumptious breakfast. After breakfast the kids went on a walking bush tour with other kids and Rick and I went on one with our guide. I stepped on a thorn bush and got a huge, black thorn lodged in my shin which then throbbed the rest of the walk. Made it home alive though and did a ... read more

Hi everyone My email is finally working. For some reason, I haven't been able to get anything to work under my yahoo account. I'm going to work backwards in my travel blog. I'll start with today and then work backwards. We left Joburg this morning at 8am in our "shuttle" if you want to call it that. It's actually a Toyota Stanza or something to that effect. It seats 7 but is tiny and we were a little cramped to say the least. After we were all in the car, there wasn't even room for our camera bag, let alone any luggage. We had known this in advance and had organized with the company to bring a trailer. It was a six hour drive and boiling hot and of course the air conditioning in the "shuttle" ... read more
