Arrived in Dharamsala after a bumpy but uneventful 10 hour journey through the night. I sat next to an Indian man who was about to finish his Phd in education and we spoke for about half an hour before i made my jumper into a pillow and tried to get some sleep. I woke up every now and then and at one point the driver stopped and revved the engine for about 10 minutes (i know nothing about cars so i don't have the slightest idea why he did this). I arrived in Dharamsala at about 6.30am and jumped into a taxi for the ride up to Mcleod Ganj, the main tourist area and the place where the Dalai Lama and the exiled Tibetan government reside. I found the hotel i was looking at in the ... read more

I had planned on getting up at 8am and heading to the bus station to catch the early bus for the 10ish hour journey to Dharamsala. This did not go as planned, it was mainly my fault on account of me turning off my alarm and going back to sleep till about 11. When i did finally decide to get up (and I wasn't happy about it, i seemed to have dreamed that I'd done all the things i was supposed to do that day and the realisation that i hadn't wasn't a happy one) i got my stuff together and checked out of the hotel. It was much nearer lunchtime than breakfast so i went to the place i had been for the egg, chips and mystery sausage. It was much busier today and i ... read more

Got up early(ish) as planned and went into town to find breakfast. Found a nice looking place, one of the nicest looking places ive been, the staff were wearing uniform suits with bow ties and there were old ships wheels and paintings decorating the walls. The food was good, i went foreggs, chips and more mystery meat sausages. After breakfast i decided to explore another part of Shimla called MIddle Bazzar, a jumble of winding streets working their way down the hill and jam packed with shops and stalls selling just about everything. I took the oppertunity to buy a few bits and after a few hours i worked my way back to the hotel. Soon after i got in it started to pour with rain (it rains at least once a day here but rarely ... read more

Woak up this morning to the sound of drums and cheering outside my room. I got up and went to the balcony to see what was happening, i expected to see a religious celebration of some sort but found instead that there was a school playground next to my room and it looked like the whole school was out, packing the stands of a 5-a-side basketball game. I watched for a while before packing up my things and going to check out of the hotel. The man behind the desk didnt seem to happy that I was leaving but I paid up and left to find somewhere else to stay. I had seen in the guide that there was a popular backpacker hotel called Spars Lodge, about a mile outside the main area of Shimla town. ... read more

Got up at 6.40am today, 40 minutes later than intended. I headed straigt to the bus station, deciding to hail an autorickshaw. We sped doen the road towards the bus station, me in the back with 4 school children, they got out at the bottom of the hill and paid the driver the 8 rupees for the ride, when i handed over my 8 rupees and he realised he wasnt going to be able to charge me extra he pointed towards the bus station and told me to walk accross the road to it. I didnt see it but i jumped out anyway and headed over the road. As it turns out he had pointed me down the wrong road, but i was only a few minutes away when i realised . The next task was ... read more

(before this post i would like to ask everyone to ignore the times that i have spelt 'woak' rather than woke in previous posts, thank you) Haven't posted in a few days so i've decided to cover the whole of the last week in one post. Having arranged to the Valley of Flowers on Tuesday morning (i think it was Tuesday, its very easy to lose track of the days here) myself, Steve, Ilona and Lyn all had an early night on Monday and i set my alarm for 3.30am :-/. I got up at 3.55am grabbed my (thankfully) prepacked bag and shot out the door to meet the others and the car that we had paid 600 rupees each for to take us to the Valley. i needn't have rushed. After half an hour in ... read more

Another relaxing day today. Chilled and chatted for most of the day and went to another yoga class in the afternoon. This one seemed much less strenuous. After yoga i went with Sarah, Rachel, Steve, Lyn and Ilona to a small resturant on the other side of the Ganges called The little Buddha. The food was great but as rachel had warned it took FOREVER to come. Luckily we were in no rush but there was a good 3 hour gap between arriving and leaving although this was good as it gave us all time to talk. We headed back to the hotel and i went off to bed. Getting to sleep took a long time however. At one point i have just started to properly drop off when i moved mt hand onto my chest ... read more

Had an absolutely brilliant day today, definitely the best since i got to India. Started early, intending to meet the others for yoga at 8.30am. I arrived a few minutes late and went in to find the instructor and 3 people (only one of which i knew) lying on the floor with bricks on their stomachs. I joined in, got myself a brick (it was made of weighted plastic) and laid on the floor for a few minutes. Now i always thought yoga was supposed to be a relaxing experience, but im not so sure. Invigorating maybe, a good start to the morning yes but i seemed to miss the relaxation part, though i seemed to be the only one. The instructor seemed to know what he was doing and was very supportive, as we were ... read more

Woak up late today. i had planned on going to see the waterfalls but after i had breakfast and used the internet for a few hours it was getting too late to go without it interfering with my other plans. The hotel I'm in (and almost every hotel in Richikesh) run yoga lasses every morning and evening. It wasn't something i had planned to do but other people in the hotel rave about it so i thought id give it a go at some point. The plan for later today is top go to one of the large suspension bridges that go over the river Ganges to look over the town and the many ashrams. The view at sunset is supposed to be pretty good so ill be heading down there later, after my yoga class. ... read more

Richikesh, the center of Yoga and meditation in India, made famous by The Beetles visit in the 60's. We arrived in Richikesh an hour ago, the bus drive took about an hour and i slept through most of it. I awoke to see 5 or 6 young men running by the side of the bus. clearly trying to look at Mireia. I can see what the LP guide says about the added attention that some women experience in India, from the little i have seen it is mainly just lingering looks and harmless attention, one rickshaw driver even adjusted his wing mirror off the road so he could see into the back of the rickshaw. As we got out of the bus the boys lingered, mainly to attract us to their rickshaws (it seems each driver ... read more
